When I was a kid, some ‘friends’ found an unignited fireworks shell that the fuse failed to explode it on the way up from the mortar. A hacksaw, magnifying glass and the noon day sun were brought together on our driveway. It was a brilliant crimson red mine.. that completely singed my blonde hair and pale white skin. Imagine “oooh-- ahhh” sounds from the neighbours but at ground level. Mom was not impressed. I never did anything quite as stupid again and learned a good lesson about thinking ahead and thinking things through. Ultimately studied chemistry and retired as an anesthesiologist… all fingers and toes intact!

Reminds me of when I was about six years old and went to a civil war re. with my neighbor and mom. While walking around the civil war re. I happened to find an unused black powder cartridge and stuffed it in my pocket before any of the adults saw it. Took this home and dumped it into some tin foil and cut a small piece of a yo-yo string and took it to the sand in my playground out in the backyard and proceeded to light the fuse. It didn't work, it just smoldered at the tip. So I pulled out the fuse and stuck the smoldering tip into the tin foil ball with a full charge of black powder, the second it touched the powder, it went boom. I burned my hand badly and had to go to the hospital to get it looked at, but don't have any scars.

All post-2001 commercial automotive airbags are supposed to have a label on the back that says "NON SERVICEABLE" & "DO NOT DISASSEMBLE" or similar warnings; the warnings are there for a reason. Airbags can & do occasionally cause burns (due to propellant) to passengers in the event of an accident. Takata airbags in particular had a caused a number of burns, including the airbags deploying prematurely, which involved a serious scandal and in turn a massive recall for airbags made in 2013-present.

So when the co2 scrubber fell in the water it ignited the oil. I'm pretty sure this is one of the theories as to what killed the crew in real life too, but I might be wrong

There is a powerful lesson I draw from this -if you're passionate about obtaining a certain outcome which you've already sunk resources into & you hit a road-block, just stop, have a break, & think about what you are doing! Potassium permanganate was called Condy’s Crystals and was commonly available. manganese dioxide was the black stuff in dry cell batteries, there might be some ammonium chloride solution as well. I have used manganese dioxide with aluminium powder in a thermite reaction, but it could react explosively. I never saw any manganese metal and suspect it burned up in the reaction.
The azides were a whole family which I was interested in but never did anything.
There was a fascinating series of books on experiments by Professor Hubert Alyea which might have touched on azides amongst other things.

I used to have sodium peroxide, adding wood shavings and a drop of water caused it to burn. Sometimes used as a starter mixture to start thermite reactions.

I was working with reverse osmosis membrane . It looked like a condom in a liquid with Sodium Azide as a preservative. Before reading about Sodium Azide I tasted a bit of liquid on my tongue. I had a reaction like just before you pass out or black out. This only lasted for 15-20 minutes I believe. Scarey and foolish. I love your videos.

I am SOOOO GRATEFUL that you were not injured more! I NEVER would have guess that you of all people would be that careless. I hope you learned your lesson and you ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT SAFETY IS NUMBER 1!!
WOW!!! You were lucky though... that could have been WAY WORSE!!! ESPECIALLY because of it's toxicity!!! THANK GOD you were not injured more, it could have exploded and metal pieces could have cut your neck!!! Abd THEN WHERE would I learn about all the amazing chemistry wonders that you continue to teach me and the world?! PLEASE don't be so careless anymore. You have friends and family that love you and would be devastated if anything serious were to happen to you. You are a VERY SMART MAN, so USE THOSE SMARTS TO TAKE CAUTION!!! :)
I really am glad you're okay tho, your hand looks like it really hurts. I've had a couple of really bad burns, but never one so big and not on the palm of my hand. Just remember to keep your hand active so your skin doesn't get too tight as it heals. I hope you feel ALL better very soon! :)

I think we can all agree that, if one has good chemistry skills and knowledge, making it is far safer than trying to get it out of the cartridge of an airbag! Using a friction- and spark- generating angle grinder!!

Angle grinders by themselves cause thousands of serious injuries per year. Mix that with cutting open an airbag explosive...that is crazy. Glad to hear you didn't lose an eye, finger, or require skin graphs. Please - safety first!

When sodium azide was mentioned, I instantly thought of the Things I Won't Work With blog series since one of the entries talked about azides. From that point on I was taught that azides aren't to be trifled with as they tend to be explosive by nature.

I'm sure all your viewers wish you well in your recovery from your injuries. Frankly, air bags frighten me. I am glad they are there, but it's like an ejection seat in an aircraft. You want it there when you need it, but it can still injure you. A few years ago I participated in a video shoot demonstrating the lethal effect of some airbags installed by one of the world's largest auto manufacturers. Using high speed cameras, a high-speed timer and a chart in the background, we showed the lethal overspeed of a certain manufacturer's air bag. We were doing the demonstration for a court case where a poor woman was decapitated by the speed of the bag inflating. Understand, this was a flaw in one manufacturer's bags, and the correctly made ones are far safer EXCEPT FOR CHILDREN! DO NOT EVER, EVER, EVER put a child in any kind of child seat in the front seat of a car. Even a properly made bag may result in injury or death.
Finally, in the number of times I have assisted at auto accident scenes, I always advise the driver and all passengers to shower at the soonest possible time. This should remove left over chemicals that can cause irritation or burns.
Thank you for your wonderful videos. I am very grateful for the information you share. In the time being, I hope you and your friends and family are unaffected by the events in Ukraine. While the leadership of Mother Russia had made a horrible mistake in this aggressive action, the people of Russia are not to blame and remain close to our hearts. It's time we all think of one of the most beautiful words on all the planet - МИР! Take care! 🫂

    • @medexamtoolscom
      @medexamtoolscom 2 года назад

As for that last paragraph, wrong. The people of Russia ABSOLUTELY are to blame. Who do you think put Putin in power? Who do you think is following his orders? You think Putin just decided one day that he would be their ruler and the Russian civilians just had to accept it because there was nothing they could do about it? They decided he would be their king and they decided to follow his commands, even when those commands were to fire rockets into a kindergarten class. They could end Putin's reign TODAY if they all just decided together not to follow his orders. The "Emperor's New Clothes" effect is all that is holding it together. I'm supposed to believe that they aren't deeply immoral even if they choose to fire the rocket into the kindergarten and likely ultimately end the world over mutiny against a madman? "Just following orders", where have I heard that before, as a defense?
