I forgot how good those shows were. I’m 51 now and was at this show w all my HS friends. This and a show a few years later in DC on the 4th of July were some of the best shows I can remember.
It's like jazz, grunge, psyche & the worst garage band had a baby...... Ladies & gentlemen.. . THE BUTTHOLE SURFERS!!!!!!! still my favorite band. & will never be replaced...
This period of Buttholes taught me that music could be hilarious and genuinely terrifying at the same time. Unforgettable if you saw it- no video can come close to capturing it.
I saw them in ‘09, and had the perfect combination of morphine and whiskey to the point that I had an out of body experience during The Bong Song.. best gig I’ve ever been to, hands down.
It takes any diy artist to use their imagination and to understand what their music and sound is truly about. That's one of the reasons why I love The Butthole Surfers.
Michael Purcell . Um...no. Gibby’s humble electric bass playing is in the same key as the stolen Canadian Sousaphone (not a tuba) and Paul’s unique guitar riffing and vocalizing. During the ten times that I saw the Buttholes live from 1986 through early 1988, they pretty much kept their music cogent and cohesive, at least compared with the other insanity constantly at play on stage. In this video, they are not always playing the same note, but this does not mean that they are playing in different keys. It seems like a bit of a basic music primer might be helpful for you.
I saw them at Tin Pan Alley in NYC's hell's kitchen in what must have been the biggest fire trap I've ever been in. People were standing like sardines to see both drummers and the Seusaphone! It was magical. Back n the day, I saw them at CB's and all over the place. They had nude gold painted dancers for one show and every single time I saw them, it was a musical changing experience. Brilliant in so many ways....
Different venues (TX), most likely same tours in late 80's early 90's. Madness that will never be rivaled by live bands again. (I hope that statement is wrong). So incredible to live through it.
I remember seeing them at the Rollick in Atlanta. The bass player/Pinkus? was hitting the lowest note on his bass as low as you could play real loud. It hit my stomach so hard that I puked wine in the corner of the club!
I need to hear the electric razor on the guitar, what a show when I saw them in the 80s naked painted stripers in the background while red asphalt the DMV movie played. Just awesome,
Great recording, thanks for posting! If I see someone wearing one of their tshirts, I can generally get an entertaining conversation going within 10 seconds.
The original version of this film was released in the mid 1980s on VHS tape in a clamshell box. I want to say that it came with a limited edition 5 inch record. It was at $30 back then and might be valuable to collectors nowadays if it has the 5 inch record. MVD Distributors released the film on dvd and those are available on eBay etc for $10 of less.
@Timothy Newitt it's amazing material. i do a radio show and on the New Year's eve special I timed it so that when they finally launch into the song, that opening tuba note hit on the stroke of midnight. it was AWESOME. it was really Something!
It was called Blind Eye Sees All and it was interspersed with the craziest interview footage of them all in a bed smoking and drinking and tripping balls.
Holy shit. The studio version was already my favorite song of theirs, but this rendition is like that one lit itself on fire, slit the throat of a virgin as it burned to death, and came back as either a demon or a god. My mind is blown.
Christ almighty that was bloody amazing. What an outfit. Live them. So pissed I missed them. They were coming to brisbane Australia but one of the drummers broke his leg really badly so they canceled. I was devastated. Have all their albums. Locust abortion technician is a masterpiece. 22 going on 23 is such a full on song.
I didn’t realize it was a high school AV club, that’s hilarious, makes this footage even better. They must’ve been wondering what the fuck was going on..
Love me some BHS!!! New Year’s Eve show in ‘91 in Houston almost sent me over the edge into an alternate universe! May have been the huge amounts of psychedelics I was on too!
Paul Leary is playing a Peavey T-60. Those things were made in the USA and built like a tank! But despite that, they didn't catch on because everyone wanted Les Pauls and Stratocasters at the time.
I fail to comprehend how the Surfers didn't become the biggest band in the world. I guess it's the hidden nectar that only the persistent and inquisitive will find. And good ole southern boys just like you and me, rem, time after time was my least favorite song.
I mean I saw them on Letterman. That's kinda big, or no? BTW Dave looked as surprised as I felt that he said L's and G's please welcome the B-Hole Surfers.
I wish I could take a time machine back to 1985 to have witnessed this. Oh well, seeing them starting in 86 to 89 I saw then 4X instead. My bad, I missed out on this
Most definitely one of my favorite posted videos of one of my favorite butthole songs. Thnx for the upload. That tuba is awesome, I've seen em a dozen times but somehow didn't ever see that version.
Swarming the sound through in waves and folding it over like folding steel into a sword. Beating it with giant hammers. Traxx from the flying sparks illuminate in the dark eyes.
Yes. I remember this tour, although some of the group couldn't make it into Canada. I'd say the work of this band is an important contribution to U.S. history; i.e.: this is America? Thanks for posting.
FK YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! Finally a video that's got the tuba !! That's what I was lucky enough to see in DC in '83-84. Can't remember which year, but I will never forget that show, and to think they opened for the DK. Yes, the DK were huge back then in the scene, but to think how big the BS ended up getting. This old man can die happy now. Because I know, PUNKS NOT DEAD !!
Me with Gordon Lightfoot a decade ago 🤯 I'm *still* kicking myself over that!!!! I make sure to see everyone I can now, especially with all the groups I like starting drop dead from old age or retiring
At nearly 50, my wife LOATHES that they are still my favorite band.
Ha, nice!
I’m 51 and they are my favorite!! Them and the Fall.
If she says 'grow up"reply, I ready have!
I've always felt the same! They are fuckin awesome!
I forgot how good those shows were. I’m 51 now and was at this show w all my HS friends. This and a show a few years later in DC on the 4th of July were some of the best shows I can remember.
They were a major influence on The Beatles. That's a fact. It's all right there clear as day.
nailed it
As an 80s kid they kinda were our beatles. Lol
I’ve done acid. But I’m scared of the acid you’ve done
Meant for brewdonkey
Yeah. John Lennon told me so yesterday again.
That's certainly one dirty, nasty groove once it gets rolling.
That band knew how to rock a nasty groove for sure.

The Loooord Is A Monkey
Leary is one of the best guitarists in the world, no mistake. Right up there with Geordie from Killing Joke.
And a pretty epic voice

He's a mad genius.
This is the greatest thing that ever happened
...Leary is unbelievable!
I'm sure someone showed up to this show on acid not knowing how it would be the greatest thing to ever happen in their life.
I saw them in ‘09, and had the perfect combination of morphine and whiskey to the point that I had an out of body experience during The Bong Song.. best gig I’ve ever been to, hands down.
I saw em at on 4 way acid. Between nine inch nails and these guys.
I saw god.
Oh they knew
I was at this show and somehow it’s seared into my brain.
I think that might have been me.

This should be in the Library of Congress. The bass guitar is playing in a different key than Leary and the tuba, and it's BRILLIANT.
key? lol

So many popular bands old and new owe so much to this band.

I love the beat when it's slowed down, it makes it so much more moody
One of the few bands that scared me live. Love the rhythm and noise, but dear baby jesus. I'm not sure this could come from anywhere else but Texas.

It was Teresa who broke her leg.
I think I'm the only BHS fan that hates 22 going on 23. The music is good but the misogyny is like someone sprinkling gravel in your ice cream.
