Just like Con Hunley and Razzy Bailey before him, Hal Ketchum put out some incredible music but just never got the respect that was due. This song is worlds better than the shit that passes for country music today.

I grew up on Todd's version. 99% of covers are anemic. This one by Hal Ketchum is all his. He comes very close to owning it. No syrup, no auto tune, no overwhelming arranging. Masterful!

@@SouthCarolinaPicker And gone all too soon. He was never on my radar while alive as I'm a city girl and when Hal hit I was already deep into jazz and big band. I only discovered him as a result of a local radio show as bumper music. Sid Rosenberg two mornings ago played Todd's version which led me to YT and this. BTW, there's a YT of Todd and Daryl Hall on Daryl's show which is just dynamite.

I'm a huge Todd fan... I found this video by searching Wikipedia about this song. I searched all the covers, and this one is the best. By a country mile. Great song and a really fantastic coverl. I think I'll search for more of Mr. Ketchum's songs.

I have to say that after hearing Hal's version of this a few times I like it better than Todd Rundgren's.Most of the time I always like the original better.

+LaurieLu Macy No, Mr. Ketchum isn't the best singer of this song... The writer, Mr. Todd Rundgren is... you can't improve on the original - and it doesn't need it. Just sayin...

    • @MrBobaloo22
      @MrBobaloo22 8 лет назад +4

Todd Rungren (btw, I'm definitely a fan of his) has some pitch problems on the original, also (because of the vocal range) has to push his voice a little too much, and it sounds a little strained -- for some reason, Todd Rundgren always seemed to like to pitch songs right at the very top of his vocal range, and it sometimes comes off a little vocally "stressed" -- also, fwiw, there are MANY examples of a good singer "improving on the original" -- Bob Dylan is a GREAT songwriter (amazing lyricist), but there are NUMEROUS examples of other singers doing a better job on his songs than he did, as he's NOT a great singer -- one obvious example would be "To Make You Feel My Love" -- an OUTSTANDING song, but the Billy Joel version "sings rings around the Bob Dylan version." Hope everyone's having a great October!

Todd still performs this live on occasion, most recently on his tour with Ringo and the All-Starr Band. It's sounds better now than when he first recorded it in 1972.

I've been a long time fan of Hal - got a pic of us together when He came to Glasgow's Ole Opry - converted my bass player to Hal & his band - and sadly.....just like Hal's bass man,,,,my bass man also passed away - but - Hal & his band enriched our lives !!

Neat tribute to Todd! Hadn't heard this, and Todd mentioned it in an interview so I had to check it out. Hal's got a great voice… but remember that Todd wrote this, played all the instruments and sang all the vocals on the original version. That's kinda talented, don'cha think?

    It was late last night
I was feeling something wasn't right
There was not another soul in sight
    Only you, only you
    So we walked along,
though I knew there was something wrong
And the feeling hot me oh so strong about you
Then you gazed up at me and the answer was plain to see
'Cause I saw the light in your eyes
    Though we had our fling
I just never would suspect a thing
'Til that little bell began to ring in my head
    In my head
    But I tried to run,
though I knew it wouldn't help me none
'Cause I couldn't ever love no one, or so I said
    But my feelings for you
were just something I never knew
'Til I saw the light in your eyes
    But I love you best
It's not something that I say in jest
'Cause you're different, girl, from all the rest
    In my eyes
And I ran out before but I won't do it anymore
Can't you see the light in my eyes
