Wrong. Thats a stock joke from the time and the song is about consent and exercising sexual agency. Source:It’s time to bring an end to the Rape Anthem Masquerading As Christmas Carol Hi there! Former English nerd/teacher here. Also a big fan of jazz of the 30s and 40s. So. Here’s the thing. Given a cursory glance and applying today’s worldview to the song, yes, you’re right, it absolutely *sounds* like a rape anthem. BUT! Let’s look closer! “Hey what’s in this drink” was a stock joke at the time, and the punchline was invariably that there’s actually pretty much nothing in the drink, not even a significant amount of alcohol. See, this woman is staying late, unchaperoned, at a dude’s house. In the 1940’s, that’s the kind of thing Good Girls aren’t supposed to do - and she wants people to think she’s a good girl. The woman in the song says outright, multiple times, that what other people will think of her staying is what she’s really concerned about: “the neighbors might think,” “my maiden aunt’s mind is vicious,” “there’s bound to be talk tomorrow.” But she’s having a really good time, and she wants to stay, and so she is excusing her uncharacteristically bold behavior (either to the guy or to herself) by blaming it on the drink - unaware that the drink is actually really weak, maybe not even alcoholic at all. That’s the joke. That is the standard joke that’s going on when a woman in media from the early-to-mid 20th century says “hey, what’s in this drink?” It is not a joke about how she’s drunk and about to be raped. It’s a joke about how she’s perfectly sober and about to have awesome consensual sex and use the drink for plausible deniability because she’s living in a society where women aren’t supposed to have sexual agency. Basically, the song only makes sense in the context of a society in which women are expected to reject men’s advances whether they actually want to or not, and therefore it’s normal and expected for a lady’s gentleman companion to pressure her despite her protests, because he knows she would have to say that whether or not she meant it, and if she really wants to stay she won’t be able to justify doing so unless he offers her an excuse other than “I’m staying because I want to.” (That’s the main theme of the man’s lines in the song, suggesting excuses she can use when people ask later why she spent the night at his house: it was so cold out, there were no cabs available, he simply insisted because he was concerned about my safety in such awful weather, it was perfectly innocent and definitely not about sex at all!) In this particular case, he’s pretty clearly right, because the woman has a voice, and she’s using it to give all the culturally-understood signals that she actually does want to stay but can’t say so. She states explicitly that she’s resisting because she’s supposed to, not because she wants to: “I ought to say no no no…” She states explicitly that she’s just putting up a token resistance so she’ll be able to claim later that she did what’s expected of a decent woman in this situation: “at least I’m gonna say that I tried.” And at the end of the song they’re singing together, in harmony, because they’re both on the same page and they have been all along. So it’s not actually a song about rape - in fact it’s a song about a woman finding a way to exercise sexual agency in a patriarchal society designed to stop her from doing so. But it’s also, at the same time, one of the best illustrations of rape culture that pop culture has ever produced. It’s a song about a society where women aren’t allowed to say yes…which happens to mean it’s also a society where women don’t have a clear and unambiguous way to say no.
Or its S & M T.V. version LOL She doesn't have the kindness or life in her eyes she used to to pull an audience like other actresses/singers. She has led a rough life.
He's a cutie but I can't find any sex appeal about him at all. ☹️ I remember thinking in 500 Days of Summer that Zoe's character made the right choice in the end.
+FerretJohn you judge People by odd fashion Choices? i love it when she lets her inner freak out. its artistic, that's what it is. Yeah it's weird but her voice doesn't change because of the exterior factor.
+iviDivi North Absolutely I judge people by their odd fashion choices, every time I see a wannabe gangsta wearing his pants around around his hips, I have to resist the urge to tall him to pull up his damn pants. If you claim to have never judged people by their clothing choices then I will tell you that you are lying. Art, like Beauty, is in the eye of the Beholder, one mans trash is anothers treasure. The late great Andy Kaufman has been described as the Father of Modern Performance Art, a visionary ahead of his time, others have described him as an obnoxious jerk. The debate still goes on. Besides being a lover of quality music I am also an avid long-time fan of professional wrestling, and yes I am quite aware of how many people refuse to see the art in it and just see it as childish trash (but that's a different conversation). Modern wrestlers, especially in the WWE, require gimmicks, an individual over-the-top style, a hook to draw the fans in. I've seen a lot of great gimmicks over the years and I've seen a lot of bad ones, and I've seen a lot of very talented wrestlers ruined because their gimmick overwhelmed their talent. The fans couldn't see the acrobats, just the clowns. Gaga is the same way, phenomenally talented singer, but that talent can be so overshadowed by stage production, by the foot-high shoes and the bubble-dresses and the huge stage productions that many fans only see the side-show and not the main event.
well we all have opinions and i never said Yours was wrong. its wrong for me. but im not going to make a big deal out of this. gaga is a huge inspiration for me and many others for her bold fashion Choices and Music. stop worrying to much and just chill out.
joseph and gaga are so talented and charming and at the top of theire game. however there's an older version of the song by nina and frederik ruclips.net/video/M2gvXL5aKhU/видео.html i find more humorous and better performed.
The role reversal is fun, but it's almost as old as the song itself. They did it in "Neptune's Daughter", a 1949 film, which contrasted two couples singing the song, one with the guy trying to get the girl to stay, the other with the girl trying to get the guy to stay.
As noted in the article below: Taken in context it's more about allowing the woman plausible deniability because the social mores of the time didn't allow women to take ownership of their sexuality. Notice, in eve ry version the woman isn't really trying hard to leave.
Love the gender swap. He’s adorable. Her dress is perfect. But how in the world did she do those stairs in those stilettos with that mermaid hem?! She’s amazing.
Okay so they DID make this song more acceptable by genderswapping the lyrics. Cool. I just wanted to make sure I was hearing this right. I Love it and it's adorable this way!
People seem to forget (or ignore) that the original song was 'genderswapped' in Neptune's Daughter, the 1940s movie it debuted in. It is first sung with the 'traditional' roles with Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban, and later with the roles reversed with Red Skelton and Betty Garrett. You can find the clip on youtube from the movie with all four singing it. So to say the least it wasn't as problematic as people claimed. From it's inception there wasn't necessarily a "male" and "female" part.
One of my favorite actors paired with an already iconic singer....and both do superbly just on chemistry alone. Updated and perfected all the more so a new generation can appreciate this undeniably captivating classic 😎
Every time I see him I think of Third Rock From The Sun :D and haters calling Gaga ugly or funny looking or whatever can blow pipe, she's adorable with those big ol' eyes and pretty smile and bangin' hot body.
+Todd Scofield I think she's strange looking and attractive at the same time. I don't like her face, but I can see how someone else would. But she's a singer, not a model, so it really doesn't matter. It's not her job to be pretty. I think she aims more to be interesting. She doesn't go out dressed in meat because she thinks she looks great in prosciutto.
+moonlily1 u dont like her face?? i think her face is really cute! im sure u only say dat because u see her in odd costumes and weird make ups more often than see her in simple or elegant clothings and simple make ups. i knew some pics of her in natural make up and even no make up at all and shes really pretty I wish i could show ya! i mean damn are u saying she should just pay for a plastic surgery that will only ruin her health? I think She's even prettier than Katy perry and Taylor swift. She looks really angelic... really rare nowadays
Last year 50 shades of Grey was a bestseller. This year they complain about an old song. I’d bet the same people that read the book are the people complaining. 2018 the year of hypocrisy
The boy's and girl's parts were switched in the original performance, too. (From the film Neptune's Daughter, 1949) Check it out, it's on RUclips, as well.
I love Lady Gaga no matter what, but she looks so pretty without all the makeup and done up costumes. Like, she has natural beauty no matter what people say
I never liked Lady Gaga much, but I must admit some of her outfits are quite lovely, including this one. I personally love those heels; they appear to have suede or buffed leather soles and a nice glitter/sequin design.
The original version also had roles swapped. Most people who complain about this song tend to not bring this fact up because in my opinion it discredits their argument.
@@themalibumessiah4596 It's not a rape song, this person never called it a rape song, this person isn't even necessarily a liberal. And as others have mentioned, the original has the woman in the main role too. So what is your deal?
WOW! They are fabulous together. She has such a beautiful voice. I did not know he could sing. My favorite version of this song and yes I've heard em all.
And she's wearing two different (but identical looking) shoes. If you look closely at the beginning or 0:41, one shoe has a leather sole and rubber tip on the end, but at 1:41 the other has a leather sole and rubber insert across the front part, plus a shape that isn't on the sole at 0:41.
what the hell ? this was gorgeous ! lady gaga was not out of tune nor slow on tempo. her voice just happens to be different from the original song and she was exactly with the beat ! this is amazing
Oh really? The only one? Go watch the original 1940s movie, where a girl is horny & the guy is trying to leave. (The 1940svactress did a better job than Gaga.)
I LOVE this version. It handles the issue of a young girl being manipulated by turning the tables, and if it means that I get to hear this pretty song, I am all for it, especially when it's sung this well. Love Gaga!
Or it shows that our generation is so distorted and screwed up, we have to twist everything into something it isn't. It's not actually about anyone manipulating anyone. If it is, then how screwed up is this comment? Fixes the problem of the woman being manipulated by having the man be manipulated? The warped interpretation of this song makes me shake my head at how so many people are sheep and unable to think for themselves. Listen to the lyrics... she wants to stay! He's not manipulating her. He's trying to persuade her sure.. but she not to do anything she doesn't already want to do. She's concerned about what others will think and about worrying others if she doesn't get home soon. But she wants to stay!!! This is written at a time where that would have been frowned on.
I love this song Baby It,s Cold Outside it is one of my favorites and I especially like the way Lady GaGa turns the song around turning the tables on the guy. That is a great twist on this great classic song.I love it and can,t wait for the Xmas seasons to hear it.I love the humor if the song .people should appreciate the humor of this fun song
"Baby It's Cold Outside" first appeared in the 1949 film Neptune's Daughter, were it was performed twice: once with the traditional roles, and later with the roles reversed (the guy leaving and the girl trying to make him stay.) That alone should prove that the song was simply intended to be about flirting and not rape.
I like the fact that Joseph is singing the lady's part while Gaga's singing the guy's part
+El Kohler That is absolutely the reason it works oscillating the energy and revealing the extreme elasticity of art. Just so beautiful.
in the original context, the film "Neptune's Daughter", it was done both ways, in the a-plot romance the guy to the girl, and in the b-plot romance a girl to a guy
Because gaga always flirts with the boys and tries to have...
+El Kohler Same here. There should be vids with guys singing girl parts and girls singing the guy parts.

Is that guy from another univers, where you can dance, sing, act and God knows what else?
Doriminati plays guitar and drum, also owns a production company
All the actors had to do all that back in the day.
and be ridiculously hot
you clearly haven't been introduced to K-pop 😈
E Rocio Vargas oh please
I love him so much XD
I love her so much.
Magdalena Karczewska I love then s much haahahah
Only her
One of my favorite actors paired with an already iconic singer....and both do superbly just on chemistry alone. Updated and perfected all the more so a new generation can appreciate this undeniably captivating classic 😎
why i can't stop smiling while watching this.
Unfull ice cuz you normie af
Because baby, it's cold outside and you're starting to hallucinate.
OMYGAD MEE TOO LOL
Because Joseph Gordon-Levitt
ME TOO
I had no idea he would be such a crooner!!! He sounds awesome!!! Loved their version of this classic.
Every time I see him I think of Third Rock From The Sun :D
and haters calling Gaga ugly or funny looking or whatever can blow pipe, she's adorable with those big ol' eyes and pretty smile and bangin' hot body.
+Todd Scofield that’s what they said about streisand, and she did ok. gaga is doing great.
Gaga is beautiful ..! Haters hate everything.
Yukari - Sama
I don't like or dislike her. I have no particular feelings about her one way or another.
Oh my God I had no idea he could sing what a gorgeous voice
Check out his hitrecord.org he is multitalented it’s under Joe
I really love the switch of roles in this. It was beautiful done with a nice pep tempo!
Here we are, 2018 and people are flipping out about the orginal song, yet lady gaga covered it for the holidays and no one flipped out.
Just some fools decided to bitch and ruin a good thing for everyone else that it didn't bother.
Still creepy.
I think it's a 2018 thing
Last year 50 shades of Grey was a bestseller. This year they complain about an old song. I’d bet the same people that read the book are the people complaining.
2018 the year of hypocrisy
Of course not, we all know it's BECAUSE the genders were flipped no one complained.
I love that they switched the boy and girl's parts It seems much better I kinda wanna watch a whole story of how it starts and ends.
The boy's and girl's parts were switched in the original performance, too. (From the film Neptune's Daughter, 1949)
Check it out, it's on RUclips, as well.
you just want to see the girl taking advantage of the guy..........and that makes two of us! lol
As well as in She & Him's cover of this song. :)
Love him, so clean cut looking , good actor, private, singer too ! Gaga is a huge talent, shoes are kicking. Nice to see him so playful.
LOVE the role switch! They both did a wonderful job!
This is the best version of this song I've heard so far!
They have such great chemistry. Delightful performance, so flirty and well sung
Love Joseph... omg 20 years I've been watching him......just keeps getting better!!
I don't care what anyone says. Lady Gaga is a truly talented singer. And Mr Gordon-Levitt isn't half bad either. ;)
I love Lady Gaga no matter what, but she looks so pretty without all the makeup and done up costumes. Like, she has natural beauty no matter what people say
I love seeing actors able to sing, dance and act. It is like the actors of old that were all triple threats. Great duet!
My bisexual heart can't handle this
I was gonna comment the same thing !! I’m dying over here😌
tmai
I'm not and I can't either, lol.
Me
OMG SAME 😭😭😭😭
Lady Gaga is specialist of all kind of music.
He´s a time traveler! Never aged
Great version of this song.
Lady Gaga is great in everything she does. Such a wonderful talent
Is it just me or is that dress stunning.
On her?????
Shes not. Uggg
Not her the dress.
I never liked Lady Gaga much, but I must admit some of her outfits are quite lovely, including this one. I personally love those heels; they appear to have suede or buffed leather soles and a nice glitter/sequin design.
Sweet duet
Joseph Gordon Levitt is the perfect man. Handsome, talented, intelligent and king of lipsyncing (that title is shared with Paul Rudd)
he actually was singing here i believe..
Francesca Camassa I think he is mentioning the lip sync battle in Jimmy Fallon.
I greatly enjoy both of them! I think the smiles are genuine, they're really having fun!!! Very nice.
What a fantastic rendition of this song! I like the switched lyrics.
The original version also had roles swapped. Most people who complain about this song tend to not bring this fact up because in my opinion it discredits their argument.
love the role reversal. both of them are gorgeous. love her dress and shoes. one of my fave Xmas songs.
Watch the original. This is not a role reversal.
I've been waiting for someone notable to switch the parts in this song. Awesome.
she is so beautiful
The gender flip is perfection
Yes!
soulfulpizza14 The original does it too.. You missed the second part of the original. Go watch it
Oh so if a woman sings its not considered a rape song nice. Great job SJW libtards
ruclips.net/video/7MFJ7ie_yGU/видео.html Its from a movie and is presented both ways originally.
@@themalibumessiah4596 It's not a rape song, this person never called it a rape song, this person isn't even necessarily a liberal. And as others have mentioned, the original has the woman in the main role too. So what is your deal?
They both played their parts really well. Too bad for Lady Gaga's ever looming maniacal glare.
WOW! They are fabulous together. She has such a beautiful voice. I did not know he could sing. My favorite version of this song and yes I've heard em all.
He’s sooo adorable and those dimples!! 😘😍
This was BEYOND adorable!
This is the cutest version of this song I've ever heard
He has a great voice!
What a classy woman!! Love her
Yeah and Lady Gaga ain't half bad either.
My fave version ever. Mama Gaga turned this song into a statement and nailed it!
she's such a classy an Gordon is a classy male figure. this is true the swag and awesomeness
1:17 I just realized he's wearing two different socks lol
And she's wearing two different (but identical looking) shoes. If you look closely at the beginning or 0:41, one shoe has a leather sole and rubber tip on the end, but at 1:41 the other has a leather sole and rubber insert across the front part, plus a shape that isn't on the sole at 0:41.
Wow didn't notice
He always wears two different socks in honor of his brother who passed away. His brother used to always mismatch his socks.
what the hell ? this was gorgeous ! lady gaga was not out of tune nor slow on tempo. her voice just happens to be different from the original song and she was exactly with the beat ! this is amazing
She's simply adorable and so talented only she can pull this version in reverse got to love Gaga
Oh really? The only one? Go watch the original 1940s movie, where a girl is horny & the guy is trying to leave. (The 1940svactress did a better job than Gaga.)
hes so freakin gorgeous
gaga is unbelievably cute in this video, love her always
What a fun, playful. flirtatious song from a more innocent time.
Where can I get a Lady Gaga just to myself? God this woman is a blessing, I'm in love.
Love the high heels that Lady Gaga is wearing.
Lady Gaga's dress is so beautiful!
He soooo cute. Those dimples 😍
I remember when he was a lot younger and on 3rd rock from the Sun. Who knew he would grow up to be so good looking!
Idk but I just saw the vid for the first time and I ship them so hard I may even write a fanfiction about it
Maybe you should post the link, so we can read this fic !!!
Oh hahhaha thank you but my english is not as good I wished it to be so it could be hard❤❤❤
You should! I'd read it no matter if it's in tolkien elvish
Beria Svensson I was thinking the same thing! stories in my head!
ill read!
Love the role reversal! And my goodness Gaga's voice sounds fabulous in this genre
No role reversal. They did both it both ways in the original 1949 film "Neptunes daughter"! This is just the part people choose to ignore!
If you look at the original, in "Neptune's Daughter," the woman is much more physically aggressive when she sings it!
The voice of this woman is UNREAL! 😍😍
i love them both so much
I LOVE this version. It handles the issue of a young girl being manipulated by turning the tables, and if it means that I get to hear this pretty song, I am all for it, especially when it's sung this well. Love Gaga!
The original 1940s movie also had a horny woman trying to stop the guy from leaving. That was its original context
This is my favourite thing Lady Gaga ever sang. And since when did Joseph Gordon-Levitt have such a lovely voice??
Still looking at this over and over. Years later. Love them both!! Love them together 💕
