Great job demoing these pickups. Just a bit of technical info for anyone wondering. Soapbar doesn't refer to anything except the shape of the pickup and there are several "standard" sizes often based on EMG or Bartolini offerings. Under the hood a soapbar shape might be a single coil, a split coil humbucker (side by side or offset), a stacked coil humbucker, a sidewinder, a dual coil (pair of single coils wired in parallel and/or series) or a quad coil. I believe the DCBs are a dual coil design wired in series with a single conductor.
jared lash Hey Jared, other than searching RUclips, can you recommend a source (book or whatever) clearly describing different pickup combos with pics and perhaps some tech details? Thank you. Your explanation was very helpful.
Jayme Lewis - The Bassist love the tone you get from these DCB so I’m curious to know what preamp you’re matching them in this bass. I’m about to order a custom bass and your response would be much appreciated
I've been thinking about changing pickups on my favorite bass for some time now. This gave me an idea about which ones to look for. I liked the "real world" demonstration. Much more usefull than the tech-description :)
Great playing man! Love the finish on the bass BTW. Thanks for a good demo of the DCB's, considering them for a Spector... the riffs at 3:45 made me laugh ( in a good way ; ) Good stuff
Great demo! It's nice to see playing along in a band capacity (with different styles) to see how they fall in the mix which is what a lot of reviewers fail to demonstrate, which, could end up being a disappointment for the player. Just cuz something sounds good on its own in a demo doesn't necessarily mean you'll sound better on stage....I've made that mistake a few times with pedals (try to buy a few days before soundcheck that way if it doesn't jive, I can always return it).
Thanks! Ya, I know what you mean. When I was amp shopping years ago, I must've gone to Guitar Center every 3 days or so, buying an amp and returning it, taking it to the gig - realizing that it won't do the trick, trying out another one... How it fits the gig and sits in the mix is something that the showroom and practice room can't tell you. Thanks for reaching out! If it's not too much to ask, would you mind sharing this video for me? I'd really appreciate the help!
Now I've been watching all your Aguilar pickup demos, and absolutely in love with the pickups. Your playing is also amazing. If I ever get a bass with soapbars, I'm going to get DCBs, especially because of the first song demo. Not my style of metal, but amazing tone all around.
+Jamie de la Sencerie Thank you so much Jamie! I truly appreciate you taking time out of your day to say such nice things on the internet; it's typically quite the opposite these days! But really, thank you!
+Jayme Lewis Of course! Your playing is perfect, the demo is great and you're genuine when talking about the pickups. I just want you too keep up the great work and bass playing!
I've been daydreaming about my "final" bass and it's definitely going to have to be a custom. These pickups just made my short list as far as what to put in it
what a great concept for a demo video, would love to see more done like that. I come from a metal background but loved the sound of the jazz sample, brilliant playing in each clip :-)
excellent question - and I'd love to answer it! Come ask me on my Twitch channel during any of my streams. I'll be live today at 6pm PST www.twitch.tv/jaymelewisthebassist
Great video, every pickup "shoot-out" should give real-world examples like this. Just wondering, what camera do you use for video, and do you generally take video of all your takes of other people's recordings?
Hi Ross, I use a Canon XF100, and lately I have been filming my sessions so that they can double-down for videos like this :) I call that time management! Thanks for reaching out!
Hello, I have a problem: I am going to purchase a set of these wonderful pick-ups, but I am not sure about the size: my bass is a Yamaha TRBX 505, with HHB5n Alnico V pick--ups, so it has five strings with a 3-screw shape. Which shape version Aguilar DCB shall I choose and buy? Which will it fit in my bass? I have been searching on the net and seen several pictures, but I have found nothing concrete, just more confusion, especially when seeing pictures of the same pick-up, with the same shape code (e.g. D-2) but some with two screw holes and some other with tree. I might also be clumsy, so I am asking for help. I am really looking forward to buying them. Thanks in advance. P.S.: I love how you play, your groove and your touch. Bravissimo!
Thank you Pietro! I'm honored! I'd say your best bet is to contact Aguilar. They're very informative and super helpful! Tell them I sent you, they'll take care of ya :)
+Art Harnpoonvittaya That would be an interesting comparison, for sure! There are tons of factors, however, that make certain instruments sound the way that they do but the pickup interpretation is very big. I'll definitely see what I can do! Thanks!
Greetings Jayme. Great demo. It sounded great even on my anemic little computer speakers. I'm actually contemplating an upgrade on a fretless 5-string that currently has Bart MK-1's. I realize that the housing is slightly longer and not as wide in the Aguilar, but I can get them installed---no problem. My question to you is this: how do they sound in that fretless? I'm assuming as good as they do in your fretted 5, but it never hurts to ask. By the way, that little funk groove in the demo just killed me. Cheers...
LOVE that tone (and playing)! Have you tried the Super Singles as well? PS: Are you going to make a video demoing the Carvin fretless with the new pickups?
Awesome job!! What do you think about EMG HZ vs Aguilar DCB for heavy music? I am about to buy the new Spector with the Aguilars but I am afraid I could lose that Spector tradicional sound. Tks for your help!!
Thank you for this GREAT Video, Jayme! What a sound...You are my hero! What is the exact model of your OBP-3 preamp? (3TK; 3TK/PP; 3SK; 3SK/PP) or what are those 5 pots and 2 switches u have on your Mej-5? What's your Pickup spacing? greetz
Georg Schmidt Thank you Georg! Honestly I have no idea what the exact model or spacing is, but the 5 pots are Volume, Blend, Bass, Mid (2 Band) and Treble. One switch turns the preamp off (in case the battery dies) and the other switch does nothing. It's called a Producer Switch. When they ask for another tone but I don't want to change it cuz I think it's good I flip it and say, "How about now?" Usually they respond with "Oh that's perfect!" :)
Jayme Lewis Haha, good one ;D Thank you very much for the quick response! Jon from M Basses told me that this "Placebo Switch" is installed just in case if you want to have Pickups which can be split into Single Coils. The Aguilar DCB Soapbars though only work as Dual Coils. Enjoying all your videos, keep it up! best regards!
You welcome! I've been watching your videos for quite sometime now...I truly enjoy them. It's awesome to know that you're the MD at your church. I'm also the bp for the worship band at my church. Keep those awesome coming....can't wait for the Carvin fretless vid.
Jayme, First of all you're one of my favorite bassists. I'm really interested in these pickups. I like how they really define the mid range and the bite. I love the sound. My main concern is I play metal and I'm looking for a bit more "presence" on sound. I would love to see and hear a video with more tonal options with these pickups. I've watched the Jimmy Haslip video on Aguilar's webpage, but that demonstration video almost turned me away from these pickups. Can you please point me in the right direction?
Robert Gibbs Thanks Robert! I'm not sure how many metal guys are rocking these, I definitely take a more traditional sound to metal (sort of like BTBAM) than most, but they're a pretty easy install. It wouldn't be hard to try them out and get rid of them if they're not doing it for ya :) Take care Robert and thanks for reaching out!
I'm a BTBAM fan. He actually uses the same bass I have (spector ns 2000/5) with the same pickups (emg hz). Thank you for responding and thank you for the ample supply of tutorial/demonstration videos. You're the best. God bless.
I just got a Felton custom bass (south Carolina made) just over a grand for one piece swamp ash, Purple Heart fingerboard, walnut neck with benson custom soap bars hipshot hardware. I mean really the pickups and hardware are at least $500 retail I couldn’t believe the sale he was having I know he’s trying to get his basses out into the world he certainly deserves it. I’m not sure about the benson pickups yet will def go with Aguilar if I don’t. Anyways figure I’d share this with you as you are such a great Internet personality in the bass world and appear to be such down to earth guy in general if you happen to have a second to check out Felton do it. We need more reasonably priced, top quality American manufactures, and if no one ever here’s about them do to lack of publicity they can’t keep doing it. Right now they are having an insane sale 30-40% off you won’t be disappointed.
Must've missed it... but what are your EQ settings? this does not sound like other Aguilar DCB + OBP-3 I've heard before... I've been looking to cut through the mix playing metal, but most of what I hear sounds muddy... this will cut like a knife!!!!
I wish I could help Danny, but this video was done 4 years ago - I have no idea what the eq settings are! But yes, this is my go-to combo. I have the OBP installed on every active bass I own, it's very versatile. Hope that helps!
Jayme Lewis - The Bassist thank you brother!!! Looking forward to installing it on a schecter Damien 5... really looking forward to having a 1/5th of your sound!
Hey Jayme, I've been for days trying to play by Ear: Enderveren - Bargaining piece... I've almost everything done except the last crazy tapping scale down...It's driving me up the wall! It sounds to me like a kind of chromatism?? Can you explain me? Thanks so much! :) I apreciatte your advice.
Luis Calvo Asensio Thanks Luis, ya I think that's a pretty sick song. TBH I'm really not sure what I'm doing there either! I'd have to sit with it for a minute to refresh my memory (I'm in the airport at the moment and can't do that), but it sounds to me like harmonic minor blended with a diminished scale. Let me get back to you!
I have a Schecter Stiletto Studio - 5 with EMG-HZ’s in it (18 volts) and was looking to get new pickups. What I’m wondering is would these be a good fit. I know they would musically. I mean would they actually fit in the bass good itself. Hope to get some feedback regarding this!
I am about to buy a Spector Euro 5, I love the gritty tone of the EMG and Tone Pump, how would the Aguilar OBP-2 with DCB fair in comparison for Hard Rock?
I'm not familiar with the EMG that's on it, or Tone Pump, but I know it'll have a very clean and hi-fi sound. I'd describe these pups as being detailed and accurate, but not necessarily clean or hi-fi. I'm not even sure if that makes sense haha!
man.. awesome the sound of you bass... I really liked it! what is the Aguilar model man? I have an Ibanez btb qm 705.. it sounds nice, but I was thinking about exchange the pick ups for some bartolini ones... but i'm really thinking about take some Aguilar ones now.
+Bruno Moraes Thanks Bruno! If you're asking what aguilar pups they are it's the DCB soap bars. If you want to know the amp it's a Tonehammer 500 through 2 DB12's. Take care!
this is actually waht i want to hear bass in a mix! how many times have we bought a new pedal or whatever sounds great at home, bring to live show and boom missing in action!
+Lord Masterdebator You might want to look into more full range speakers; the bass tone is pretty dark but it's actually quite high in level on all of the examples, definitely more than it would be in the actual mix. Sounds great as always Jayme
I have a spector with some EMG-DC's in there and I was thinking they're just too hot, but I love the growl. Would you say these have the same amount of growl but with rolled-off hotness?
+freedomnowmedical Actually, the guy who made the bass did it. His name is Jon Maghini from M Basses. Check him out, and let him know Jayme sent you, I'm sure he can help!
Jayme it must be nice having the best of the best basses , amps , etc. I wish you well dont take that wrong , I'm happy for you and you play bass really good. I have a MIM Fender Jazz bass and need to make it sound good with my hands only , no pedals just a 1986 Peavey Minx bass amp. I can't play loud cause a lady below me raises cane. I use headphones and have cauliflower ears , what do you suggest. It's holding me back from progressing when I can't release what's in me. I'm almost 3 years into bass. I feel I would be a lot better if not for her complaints. Out of all the basses I've seen you play the white Fender sounds best to me. Its just the 3 of us here , bass , amp & me waiting to cut loose. I got it all in me but can't release it , it's a build up of each passing day with no place to go let it out . O geez , what would you do if you were me. Blessings ,,,
+Mark S Beretta Hi Mark! To some extent, we all experience this. I have a wife and 3 other room mates at my house, so I don't get to rock out as often as I want to either! I'd say try and find a time that nobody is home, or even rent a cheap practice space that you can hit full volume. Or go to a local university and play in one of their practice rooms :)
Thanks Jayme , I live alone so it's just the neighbors getting old that have nothing else better to do but make everyone around them miserable like them , I will find a way. I get new strings tomorrow , mine have lost their punch , when they fall off they really fall off . I order from Amazon and pay $15 less than the guitar store. There's so much stuff there I just stay away. I started to order a Sire bass but will wait for the hype to pass , I still think Fender sounds better , people get offended easy but a bass has no conscience , only we can make our bass sound great.
They're made by Jon Maghini who also made the bass :) Aguilar can send the pups to your luthier to replace the covers if you ask. Thanks for reaching out Gabe!
it's just a little studio jam I did with some friends. here's a link to check out the whole thing labasslix.com/live-studio-jams-odd-meter-funk-jam-1 thanks!
Good sound samples! But a little ridiculous in the beginning if you don't know the tech why are trying to explain it? Just play the pickups, don't try to explain things your incapable of explaining. Otherwise great sound clips to hear how these pickups really sit in the mix.
So sorry for that, it looks like it's not online anymore. If you'd like you can contact her directly. All of her info is on this page discoverychurch.com/staff/ I'm sure she'd be more than happy to get you a copy! Just tell her I sent you :)

Real world application is a great idea for showing off pickups. Sounds great man!
Thank you John!
More importantly: no slap
I've been thinking about changing pickups on my favorite bass for some time now. This gave me an idea about which ones to look for. I liked the "real world" demonstration. Much more usefull than the tech-description :)
...and one more thing, dont drop the soapbar!!!!
Há! Bingo!!
Great playing man! Love the finish on the bass BTW. Thanks for a good demo of the DCB's, considering them for a Spector... the riffs at 3:45 made me laugh ( in a good way ; ) Good stuff
Very versatile - both you and the pickups
Thank you!

The Bassist sure can.
These pickups sounds phenomenal. I do like ceramic pickups.
Nice ! Id like to ear that fretless with those pick ups ! Awsome work.
Now I've been watching all your Aguilar pickup demos, and absolutely in love with the pickups. Your playing is also amazing. If I ever get a bass with soapbars, I'm going to get DCBs, especially because of the first song demo. Not my style of metal, but amazing tone all around.

Thank you so much Jamie! I'll certainly do my best :)
I'm so glad to know you're laying down some rad bass lines 'n tones for worship tunes!
Actually, I'm an MD at my local church, so about 90% of what I play in a week is worship music :) Thanks John!
Good demo, nice to hear how these pups sound in a musical mix. Thanks.
I've been daydreaming about my "final" bass and it's definitely going to have to be a custom. These pickups just made my short list as far as what to put in it
That solo on the funk jam!! Great vid Jayme.
Thanks dude!
what a great concept for a demo video, would love to see more done like that. I come from a metal background but loved the sound of the jazz sample, brilliant playing in each clip :-)
+grahamsmithbass Thank you so much!
A real demo o: with real music o: HERESY!
Hey great playing!! but how much effects and production was applied to the bass signal?
These things sound great for metal which is what I’m looking for! Would you recommend these pickups over EMG?
excellent question - and I'd love to answer it! Come ask me on my Twitch channel during any of my streams. I'll be live today at 6pm PST www.twitch.tv/jaymelewisthebassist
Such savagery of tone and playing skills!! Good Lord, you can play!!
Thanks Nick!
Great demo for these awesome pickups! Jayme, you have a very unique playing style... amazing job!
Thank you Dwayne!
Great playing! Made me happy! Rock on!
+jonamore01 Thank you!
Hello, I have a problem:
I am going to purchase a set of these wonderful pick-ups, but I am not sure about the size: my bass is a Yamaha TRBX 505, with HHB5n Alnico V pick--ups, so it has five strings with a 3-screw shape.
Thanks mate, I shall!
Keep on rocking!
What preamp this this bass have? Amazing tone and playing!
Thanks! It's the Aguilar OBP-3 :)
Can you please compare jazz, precision, and soapbar pickup? Thank you so much.
+Art Harnpoonvittaya That would be an interesting comparison, for sure! There are tons of factors, however, that make certain instruments sound the way that they do but the pickup interpretation is very big. I'll definitely see what I can do! Thanks!
+Jayme Lewis Are they passive cause they sound it.
+Anthony Haller I think so. this bass has a preamp but I think this pups can be wired without it.
Jayme Lewis
Awesome thanks.
Cheers...
thanks chris! yes they sound great on the fretless too :) definitely a killer sound. thanks for reaching out man! I hope all is well!
LOVE that tone (and playing)! Have you tried the Super Singles as well?
PS: Are you going to make a video demoing the Carvin fretless with the new pickups?
No I've not tried them but I'm sure they're great! And yes, I probably won't be able to resist a fretless demo :)
Awesome job!! What do you think about EMG HZ vs Aguilar DCB for heavy music? I am about to buy the new Spector with the Aguilars but I am afraid I could lose that Spector tradicional sound. Tks for your help!!
I'm afraid I haven't played them, or at least I don't remember, but the DCB's kill for heavy music. I use it all the time :)
Thank you for this GREAT Video, Jayme! What a sound...You are my hero!
What is the exact model of your OBP-3 preamp? (3TK; 3TK/PP; 3SK; 3SK/PP)
or what are those 5 pots and 2 switches u have on your Mej-5?
What's your Pickup spacing?
greetz
Georg Schmidt Thank you Georg! Honestly I have no idea what the exact model or spacing is, but the 5 pots are Volume, Blend, Bass, Mid (2 Band) and Treble. Jon from M Basses told me that this "Placebo Switch" is installed just in case if you want to have Pickups which can be split into Single Coils. The Aguilar DCB Soapbars though only work as Dual Coils.
Enjoying all your videos, keep it up!
best regards!
Your Bass line on Dust and Bones is amazing... congratulations
Incredible sound! What kind of strings are you using in this demo?
Adam Sorry Adam, I don't know if I ever responded to this but I play D'Addario Nickel Wounds :)
My favorite for my Stingray.
I'd love to hear that fretless?
Awesome video!!! Jayme, your playing as always it's so on point and incredibly amazing, but above all so anointed and inspirational. Blessings!!!
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it and I truly appreciate you taking the time out of your day to tell me so. Thank you!
You welcome! I've been watching your videos for quite sometime now...I truly enjoy them. It's awesome to know that you're the MD at your church. I'm also the bp for the worship band at my church. Keep those awesome coming....can't wait for the Carvin fretless vid.
Ephra bass Awesome! Ya, I'll let you know as soon as it's posted :)
which model???? D series or G series???
Jayme, First of all you're one of my favorite bassists. I'm really interested in these pickups.

Thank you for responding and thank you for the ample supply of tutorial/demonstration videos. You're the best. God bless.
Thank you Robert, it's my honor and pleasure!
Passive or using the aguilar preamp too?
+E. Burkhardt I think these examples bypassed the preamp.
Whats the best strap for metal playing?
I'd say anything thick and padded :) That way you don't strain your shoulder too much
You need heavy bass + thicc strap
Because heavy bass = heavy tone
Thicc strap helps alot
Hi Jayme. What kind of preamp is in that bass? ( just nosy ).
Do have a preamp in that bass?
I ended up buying these and am very happy with the results.
Hi Jayme, just wondering.. how does it works along if you have a Coil Tap Switch? any noises etc.
Jack MataXatu As far as I know the coil tapping is not available for this pickup. I could be wrong though. Thanks for reaching out!
are these aguilar soapboar pickups all active?

How did you get the wooden pickup covers?
The bass maker made them for me :) His name is Jon Maghini of M Basses.
man.. awesome the sound of you bass...
Take care!
+Jayme Lewis ok man... thanks a lot!
this is actually waht i want to hear bass in a mix! how many times have we bought a new pedal or whatever sounds great at home, bring to live show and boom missing in action!
Totally! If it can't sit right in the mix, it ain't gonna work.
The thing that bugged me was the volume on the first two songs the bass was barley audible but other than that fantastic!
+Lord Masterdebator You might want to look into more full range speakers; the bass tone is pretty dark but it's actually quite high in level on all of the examples, definitely more than it would be in the actual mix.
Sounds great as always Jayme
I was using extra bass boost headphones lol
I have a spector with some EMG-DC's in there and I was thinking they're just too hot, but I love the growl. Would you say these have the same amount of growl but with rolled-off hotness?
somebody please tell me the brand and model of this bass i just love it!!!!!!
Hi, who did your pickup covers? I want to do something similar and don't know where to start :(
+freedomnowmedical Actually, the guy who made the bass did it. His name is Jon Maghini from M Basses. Check him out, and let him know Jayme sent you, I'm sure he can help!
Ese lick en "Odd meter funk jam" me ha vuelto loco 4:35
Best blend pickup bass versetile j for a band
are these aguilar soapbar pickups like D1 passive or active?
What preamp you have onboard that bass, really love the match with the DCB’s
Aguilar's OBP-3 :)
Glad you put in some Christian pop/rock examples, because demos with that genre of music are hard to find!
mas502arc lol
Mark S Beretta Nice! Ya I've not heard a Sire bass yet but I hear great things about them.
I think the Sire is great for slap bass , E - A string sound good but the upper registers sound a bit off but it might be just me.
Mark S Beretta Interesting! Ya, I'll have to get my hands on one for sure!
I know this is a old vid but how did you get thoose amazing looking pickup covers?
They're made by Jon Maghini who also made the bass :) Aguilar can send the pups to your luthier to replace the covers if you ask. Thanks for reaching out Gabe!
Very helpful video! Thanks!
Love this Video! Great playing!
Thank you, I'm honored! Would you mind sharing this video for me? I'd really appreciate the help dude!
No prob, I will!

+Jayme Lewis I found it, But I found this song, I'am Brazilian, I would be grateful if You send link Music
Any style You dont play???
I think I'm pretty bad at Latin Jazz and folk. They don't ever give me those gigs ;)
Someone told me that aguilar dcb pick ups doesn't have neck or bridge sign, so u can put that in any order. Its that true ?? Thx in advance..
I don't recall; but the folks at Aguilar would be able to help you for sure!
Damn some sick playing
Stratisfied Thank you very much!
I eventually went with the EMG45JX, but kind of wish that I would have gone with these. These sound more natual and organic for sure!
+Michael Mather Nice, I love EMG's too. I'm sure the bass sounds great either way!
Thanks for this.
You're more than welcome, thank you!
The Bassist very quick response...
How does this video have 40 "thumbs'down"? That means there are at least forty imbeciles out there. Great sound and great playing.
You are a monster!
kenneth conlon Thank you Kenneth!
great video
Good sound samples! But a little ridiculous in the beginning if you don't know the tech why are trying to explain it? Just play the pickups, don't try to explain things your incapable of explaining. Otherwise great sound clips to hear how these pickups really sit in the mix.
Can you send me the declare surrender by Sarah Lynn grubb to my email? I can't find any link to buy or videos anymore. :(
Awesome plays and pickup by the way. I would like to upgrade to Aguilar pickups in the future, thanks for sharing :D
So sorry for that, it looks like it's not online anymore. If you'd like you can contact her directly. All of her info is on this page discoverychurch.com/staff/ I'm sure she'd be more than happy to get you a copy! Just tell her I sent you :)
Nice! Ya those are some of my favorite pups. Thank you!
No funk huh 🤔
E 18v
I appreciate you doing this video and let us hear what these PUs sound like, but pls shut up and play. Music wants to be played, not blah blahed. Thx!
+becky o I'll be sure to do that since you asked so nicely.
These or Bartolini.. decisions decisions.
Couldn't go wrong with either. But these :)
Thanks! I ended up going with the barts, I got the pair for $175 to go with their preamp. However maybe I will consider these on a fretless :)
Nice! I bet they sound great!
I hope so, buyers regret is a terrible thing! However it should be an improvement over the ESP SB4s I've got now ;)
dope
Metade do vídeo falando...não gostei
