My best advice to anyone starting out: get decent equipment and find a good teacher. Those are the two areas where young players will get discouraged and quit. Great stuff as always Mimi.

Most young guitarists never play with a drummer and thus their timing is terrible. A metronome is a great tool.

Reminds me of when I bought a cheap acoustic guitar to muck around on, but it was hurting my fingers. I looked at it more closely and decided the strings didn't need to be that far away from the fretboard, so I took the strings off and lowered the action. Made a big difference. Much nicer to use.

    Good tips 👍
I personally have become familiar with all of the tips shared here, plus I was fortunate to have a good teacher who taught me from the very start the importance of
A few simple things that go a long way when you make a good habit of doing.
Warm up - stretches get the blood pumping, you'll be able to endure the pain at the start for longer and not be strained so much or put off.
And it also helps at the same time with becoming more mentally focused before you start
and that is very helpful in learning something that is essentially like a new language and I hear its good for your health too being on that wavelength is similar to the benefits of learning a new language. I know for me its been very beneficial for sure! I love ❤️ playing guitar, learning new stuff
and that positive frame of mind is what will get you a long way. I have picked up the guitar almost every day for years because I've made a habit of doing it.
Don't just learn on one level, yes the foundation is the most important part of building up a repertoire of songs therefore new chords, strumming styles, riffs, scales etc but it's still important to reach for challenges, like training exercises ir that really hard song you live, work on that fir example over the long haul while keeping grounded in the milk have a go at the meat.
that will stretch your abilities because the basic chords etc will come quicker than you know, so basically be hungry for more but never forget to reinforce the basics, your foundation you'll be surprised by how much in doing that can benefit you in your basics and confidence over time in taking on more difficult challenges.
Breathing - along with posture even if its not perfect be aware of it has to become 2nd nature and it will! This goes hand in hand with muscle memory, and because of muscle memory which comes in time, and that is a given.. only when you stick at it over time.
very easy to forget to relax and breath because you're so focused on understanding what you're reading to play,
But the desire to learn to sound like your favourite most loved music, that which has got you to here, that's what drove me to become better and better,
So dont lose sight of inspiration!!and I'll bet most ppl have had this where learning at the very start
and even later on new unfamiliar stuff... its stressful, frustrating, you have to see yourself doing it, believe in yourself that youre going to be good, you will become it or itll become you, either way its all good, do not give up on that and you will get there when you keep at it results will follow and plenty eureka moments to enjoy when you realise... ! I can do this!@ such a good feeling!
This is true now and when you get there because of more frequency in manageable sessions.. learning rather than once a week for an hour, more frequently at 30mins 4eg each every day results in better memorisation ability, aptitude for learning as patterns become familiar and clearer, expansion of knowledge along with muscle memory
    Just do it!
Don't think too much about it just get on with it it'll become easier to learn all that there is to learn that is all very much useful in getting you towards what you first envisaged yourself doing, for me it was imagining myself up on the stage playing lead in the school disco band... corny but teenage years is a delightful cocktail of emotions and a lot of air guitar and singing Oasis songs in pubs with your mates... that feeling is still fresh because I went with it and decided to learn the guitar.
That's also something I believe is important- committing to the decision and not forgetting where you came from, what inspired you so much at the start because its such a potent powerful force it lasts.

Here’s a tip. When you play get used to placing that finger directly behind that fret. Lets say you switch positions and go for something high or anywhere on the guitar, you are right there and you don’t have to hunt and peck for the note especially if you are playing a lead break

Don’t know about everyone else, but the callouses aren’t really visable. When I was young they were because our fingers are soft and weak.. I can’t see them on my fingers at all. I do use flatwounds but I don’t think that’s why. I think as you get better you’re not fighting everything, pressing too much or grating your fingers against friction points. Maybe Uber shredders do. Thoughts?
