Gorilla Female Stomps Her Feet And Lots Of Chest Beating

- The female gorillas from the Bristol Zoo are enjoying the sun and stayed out quite long. Touni, the one on top of the hut has a clap and stomps her feet. Down the bottom, Kala on the left glances around, as if to say, did you see that? She's crazy :-).
Touni has a little roll. Kala moves away and Kukena follows to look at what she has got to eat. Kukena then tries to grab the stick from her, third time lucky as she manages to get hold of it in the end. Kala moves her bed up the hut, Touni is down the bottom with Kukena approaching again. Kala doesn't get to use her bed, as Kukena is disturbing her again. Poor Kala moves back down and then she gets a slap from a charging Touni. Kukena beats her chest repeatedly and when she's down the bottom again she kicks the hut and beats her chest once more. Touni comes from behind the trees, charging beating her chest and runs after Kukena. While they're busy chasing each other, Kala tries one more time to move her bed up to the top.

Hi poppy, no unfortunately they haven't come back to me with an answer. The CEO of Twycross zoo did tell me she was looking into it, but it might be impossible for them to implement, that was the last I heard.

Thank you Phyllis. When I was there and saw them inside they seem to be fine with each other. It all started outside. Must have been the changing weather :-) Unfortunately I was only there a few days, so I haven't got the whole picture of them how they are day in and day out.

The sound is real when they pound their chest? How does it make so much noise?
I know this is two years old, but...Gorillas have no fur on their upper chests, and they cup their hands to make the sound louder. Chest beating is a communication gesture, and the meaning behind it can vary. It can be an expression of dominance, a threat, or even an invitation to play. You have to look at it in the context of what else is happening at the moment with the individual. Ignore the nonsense about "unfair treatment" and light rays reflecting off fur, lol. Chest beating, charging and hitting objects are all perfectly normal gorilla communication mechanisms, which they do in or out of captivity.

This zoo has great landscaping compared Japanese zoo.

There are some trees close to the edge of the enclosure. Do these gorillas have access to any real trees?
Like Twycross Zoo they often get fresh tree branches to eat the leaves off and lots of tree trunks to climb. A tree doesn't last very long in gorilla enclosures, as they would just strip it bare.

they beat they chest to communicate... it means if you said in english "unfair treatment" then they will display next what is unfair.. so when you see a gorilla beat their chest in capativity it is cause light rays are reflecting off your eyes on his fur.. and skin and he notices it.. and is trapped in a environment where he cant roam where he needs.. thus beat the chest and tap the ground or rush another gorilla or hit a door or window..
i n this situation captivity is causing the chest beating
