How to Build a DIY Fire Pit in Your Backyard - Thrift Diving

  • I have been wanting to build a DIY fire pit in my backyard for the longest time! I bought an easy fire pit kit and decided to build it with my middle son who stayed home for "Take Your Child to Work Day." While this should have only taken 1 hour, it literally took us all day. HA! Working with your child, things will ALWAYS take longer, right? :) Anyhow, it was a fun day, and we finished it off by inviting over some friends for roasted marshmallows! If you've been wanting a fire pit in your backyard, it's much easier than you think to build one! :)

    What a neat project, it's so tidy. This looked like a 'forgiving' job, perfect for beginners... It makes me optimistic about my skills...I love he was ready to do it again ~ so sweet!

    • @ThriftDiving
      @ThriftDiving  6 лет назад

      It was totally forgiving! Yep, with my being 1" off, it's not really noticeable, and since it wasn't like someone was hiring me to do it perfectly, I could do it with some errors and no one really cared. :) You should give it a try. It's nice having a place to hang out and be with friends and family around something as soothing as a fire!

    I laughed so hard when your son said "digging?" 0:52 More than he expected lol. So adorable. 😂 I hope he now understands all the work that goes into making a RUclips video but it doesn't discourage him to make some more later 👍

    • @ThriftDiving
      @ThriftDiving  6 лет назад +2

      Yes, exactly!! LOL. I thought that was pretty funny, too. You should have seen the part (that I didn't include) where all we had done was filmed the intro and then he needs to go inside for a snack because he was ready for a break! HA! I was like, "Wow, you have no idea, huh??" You're right, though, I hope it gave him a glimpse into how videos work. I had hoped we would have had time to edit the video together, but we didn't. I'll help him with his video and teach him how to edit. :) Thanks for watching and supporting him! :)

    What a great idea! I had no idea you could actually buy a kit and do this. You and your son did a great job. I am building a new home in SW FL, and a fire pit very similar to what you did with a small paver deck is around $6K. I will definitely be following your lead if we have room after we get the pool in. Congrats!

      LOL, I had to break down and buy a wheelbarrow last week, though! I built raised garden beds and there was NO WAY to haul that much dirt all the way to the back of the house using the jogging stroller. HA! That new garden bed video will be up soon! Likely this weekend. :) Thanks, Jemi!

    Great project Serena! It's great how you got your son involved for this project. I made one of these a few years ago. Got the kit from Lowes, and it has held up great. I decided not to use adhesive on my bricks because I wasn't sure If I might move the pit to a different location later. Surprisingly, the bricks locked in place very nicely and I haven't had any problems with them moving out of place. My kids and family love the fire pit. Thanks for the video tutorial!

      I know, Megan! I considered putting it in the beginning, but I thought it was best to include it at the end. My channel isn't really a "family" channel, even though my kids are definitely sprinkled throughout the videos. I like to try to stay as "on topic" as possible, but yet add a little fun and family into them. Thank you for watching!! :)

  • @ekathrynwilms7621
    @ekathrynwilms7621 6 лет назад

    That one inch is a good idea for run off in heavy rain. In the winter you will not have as much ice buildup in the pit. If the ring rusts out just go to an auto wrecking business and pick up a simi-truck tire rim to replace it. Truck rims last almost forever. The pit looks great and the kids will really like it if they camp overnight in the yard.

    • @ThriftDiving
      @ThriftDiving  6 лет назад

      Oooh, great ideas! I hadn't thought of that! SEE! There was an unconscious method to my madness. HAHA. I am thinking of finding (or making) a fire pit cover for off season to protect it, or when not in use. I'll check Amazon to see how much they cost!

    • @ekathrynwilms7621
      @ekathrynwilms7621 6 лет назад

      Find a pallet of two behind a store. Cut them a little larger than the pit's diameter cover the sides with the extra wood to slip over the outside of the pit's sides. Seal the top so the rain water is limited entering the pit. A cute idea would be to make the top look like a barrel then use it as a table at times when the pit isn't in use. Here in eastern Ohio we get crazy freezing rain early and late winter. The ice can destroy outdoor items. Covers on like are usually plastic and will blow off during storms.

    @G0SuBunnY 6 лет назад

    I think this is awesome for a DIY project :)!
    If you do another one :D add a vent/flue for the fire pit using a laundry tube ((aluminum) . in addition a grate for easy cleaning, good part is most of the stuff is great for your compost or soil. so washing it into the yard is actually pretty good for it.
    Keep it up!

    Fantastic!
    (Last year I broke down and ordered a new item, a hard-sided garden cart from Amazon. It was only about $65.00, and worth every penny. Now I no longer struggle with moving heavy items.)

    • @ThriftDiving
      @ThriftDiving  6 лет назад

      Okay, I'm sold! I'll have to do the same! I saw someone's garden cart recently and thought, "I need one of those!" :) So I, too, will look for one. I'll save the baby stroller for my future grandkids! HA

      Yes, that's me!! I'm one of their Duluth Women! :) Been working with them now for 3 years almost. I was wearing their overalls in the video. Man--those things have a gazillion pockets! LOL. You'll notice at the start of the video, I was wearing jeans, but after bending over and seeing my "goods" showing, I went and switched into my Duluth gardening overalls! HAHA

    How do you clean the ash out, if you are burning wood directly on the gravel?
