    Elmax is currently my favorite steel. It cuts like a dream and remains sharp even with edge problems; it does not really get dull, the edge just becomes toothy with extensive use. It will outperform at skinning, food prep and even as a carving knife.

    I use a fire method that does not require a knife or hatchet but it's nice to know a knife can handle the task of a hatchet. I just got an Enzo Trapper and never plan on using as a hatchet. You can make a fire with out depleting your blades.

    The Enzo Trapper with Elmax steel is also one of my favourites. I bought two of them: one for really hard use and an other one for my collection. It's price/quality comparison is unbelievable. Only my Fällkniven TK1 is more wear resistant. But that knife is over three times more expensive. Also consider the Enzo Birk 75 as an EDC folder.

    Guys, happy new year. What i'm really interested in is your sharpening stone setup. Especially in the Lionsteel M4 Video. Is that a Shapton 30.000 at the end?

    • @DutchBushcraftKnives
      @DutchBushcraftKnives  7 лет назад +4

      thanks a lot! happy new year! In I finished the knife with a Shapton ha-no-kuromaku 5.000 stone. I don't go higher than 5k for my outdoor knives. I do strop them with 12k compound afterwards.
      For my kitchen knives I sometimes go up to the Shapton ha-no-kuromaku 12.000 stone but I don't think anyone would need more than that. 30.000 should be a nice stone for mirror polishing though.

      +Loris Buschor hey loris., If you're sharpening on stones just push the knife from the shoulder of the bevel to against the stone and keep doing this until the scratches reach the apex of the edge. Make sure your force is guided towards the apex while maintaining the angle at the shoulsers

    nice job as always.
    i have a ZT 0561 in Elmax steel.
    the knife is a bit of a mess. Great build quality and fit & finish and the overall design is excellent.
    But i dont care for the ball bearing blade pivot nor the pain induction devices all around the handle. id much prefer some nice traction enhancing jimping but whatever.
    The Elmax blade is also a polarizing feature. i believe mine was one of the ones that got overheated during sharpening because the original.edge and its edgeholding was only fair.
    But since sharpening a few times ive gotten into good steel and im really liking its performance.
    It takes a few hours but it takes a scalding edge and it holds that initial keeness fairly well. It holds a "working edge" a remarkably long time and its toughness is off the charts. Up there with 3V in my experience.
    Corrosion prevention is also cutting edge.
    Elmax has become one of my favorite steels despite a rocky start.
    I can see how it would be an excellent steel for a bushcraft or outdoorsmans knife.
    Something that can get you through a full month of survival without requiring sharpening.
    Its a great steel!

    Excellent video as always. How would you compare this knife with the Bark River Bushcrafter for all around camping and outdoor use? Thanks

    • @DutchBushcraftKnives
      @DutchBushcraftKnives  8 лет назад +3

      In terms of steel the elmax is slightly better than CPM-3v. However the bushcrafter has a much better handle in my opinion. Enzo's handle isn't bad but it's far from perfect. On the other hand the enzo trapper costs about half the price of the bushcrafter and both would be amazing for allround camping and outdoor use. However, if you don't mind the money the bushcrafter is the superior knife.

      Roberto Ruscigno Survival its the steel that was before m4 so its a pretty good steel not stainless but around 3.5-4.0 chromium if i dont remember wrong so it wont rust by looking at it but can patina after seing onions and such if not wiped dry.
      Ive tried m2 enzo and it was very good

    Hey guys, I love your videos! I am looking to get a Trapper and want your advice. Which Enzo Trapper would you guys recommend? The O1, or Elmax?

    • @DutchBushcraftKnives
      @DutchBushcraftKnives  8 лет назад +5

      Both are excellent with enzo's heat treatment. If you want ultimate edge retention you should take elmax but if you want your knife to be easy to sharpen O1 is the way to go. Elmax is not too hard on good hard waterstones though. If you live in a humid environment I would always suggest Elmax.
      Hope this will help you decide.

  • @frederikkjaer4170
    @frederikkjaer4170 7 лет назад +1

    Does this knife have good edge retention? Ive seen many people complaining about the poor edge retention and inability to take a fine edge. Is cpm 3v better?

    • @Antares-dw9iv
      @Antares-dw9iv 7 лет назад +1

      On Average (depending on the heat treatment) CPM 3V is superior in just about every aspect, except for slightly inferior edge retention. However while it is still quite corrosion resistent it is not a stainless steel like Elmax. It's also worth considering that CPM 3V knives are usually a bit more expensive. That being said properly heat treated Elmax will still be plenty though enough for just about everything you can throw at it. And as he said Enzo pretty much always do an excellent job on their heat treatment.
      CPM 3V takes a slightly finer edge but Elmax still takes a fine enough edge to easily shave arm hair and cut phone book paper. It will be more difficult to sharpen though.

    Say Heah Dutch, Lately I've been using my thinned down Rodent 5, But not much but more at the apex of the edge. It's a Excellent slicer as well as a pretty good carver for a 5 1/2" blade with a very comfortable lightning bolt style handle, The steel is carbon and is SR101 which is a Ballbearing Steel Tempered with the Busse Technology. It's strong and lite. But yeah, I'm thinking of getting the Elma Trapper.

    • @DutchBushcraftKnives
      @DutchBushcraftKnives  8 лет назад +3

      Thanks a lot mate! It depends. The first time sharpening depends on the bevel and geometry given by the manufacturer. We regrind them most of the time. An enzo (scandi) grind we mostly make slightly convexed (scandi-vex) this only takes around 30-40 minutes. Sometimes we have to get rid of a large secondary bevel which can take up 1-2 hours. After the first sharpening it only takes around 10-30 minutes depending on the damage the edge took while using it. Having good and hard stones help a lot.
      Thanks again mate.

    Hello from Greece. I want to buy a trapper 95 in elmax, but i worry about the handle: it seems that this small angle at the end of the handle would produce some hot-spots, because the little finger won't fit good. Is it the case with enzo's. Thanks in advance.

    • @DutchBushcraftKnives
      @DutchBushcraftKnives  6 лет назад

      The enzo handle can indeed have little hot spots. Its definitely not the best handle

  • @TimothyRyanFisher
    @TimothyRyanFisher 7 лет назад +1

    At the risk of sounding condescending, let me say I love your videos, I bought two Enzo's because of your videos, but I'm a non batoner, I don't want to risk breaking or dulling my knife in a SHTF scenario. I was taught fire making by my grandfather, and father employing a method using material that can be processed by hand. I was taught to preserve blades. We never used a knife to process fire wood, but used our hands to break smaller sticks for kindling. It's nice to know the knife can baton but why? It's unnecessary.

    • @greekveteran2715
      @greekveteran2715 2 года назад +1

      Muela Husky is a Hunting knife, Enzo Trapper ha a scandi edge that is not good for a hunting knife. Late response, but the right answer is Muela Husky. Bark River Fox River in CPM 3V is the best hunting knife you can find. If you want even better than that, you have to order a custom knife from a custom maker. Enjoy!

      @DutchBushcraftKnives  8 лет назад +1

      +Jordi Masramon mm strange, I haven't experienced any chipping on my elmax. Make sure you don't work on sandy stuff. Elmax can chip for sure but it should be easy. Maybe you can try to increase the edge angle a bit.

    • @jmasramon
      @jmasramon 8 лет назад

      Could it be a defect with this specific unit? Perhaps a problem with the heat treatment? It keeps getting chipped every time I use it.
      I just wanted to know if this is normal with elmax (perhaps too high in the Rockwell scale and it gets brittle?) or something unusual I should complain about

    • @ProCelestialEmpire
      @ProCelestialEmpire 7 лет назад

      I saw a lot of places people complaining about Elmax and you are not alone. This video almost convinced me to buy it at Amazon but your comments hindered me to do so... Why there isn't a stainless steel that holds up its edge durably.... I heard v10 is laminated and kinds of soft, so Fallkniven s1 or a1 isn't that good, I heard technically s30v has less chromium so it's not stainless enough. I'm so dispair about steels

    Say Heah, Since this video, I had (2) knives made with white handles, Oops actulally (3) if you include my matching Battle Horse Mad Hatter Machete in L6. I had it made specifically made to match my other Battle Horse Modified Attitude. A Awesome Combo. I also completed my Wannabe Nessmuk Trio, My Adventure Sworn 3V Guide with White G-10 Handle with Black Micarta Liners. I teamed it with my 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet and my Rough Rider Copper Bolster Moose Pattern Slipjoint Pocket Knife. But I think I still really like your 12c27 Enzo better.,,.p

    You really make me cringe when I watch you battening your knife like that. Sooner or later either that handle is going to come loose or that knife is going to break. Power to you if your willing to run that kind of risk. Lol. Cheers guys!

    not bush crafting shorts.....bro. screw that feather sticking, crap. cut a big piece of steak meat. I'd love to see your face if that blade cracked in half hitting it like that....now that would be entertainment.
