      I do not agree that Russia is “lucky” to have such great pianists and other musicians. Russia has long experience in recognising great talent in its first bloom, and then in allowing students to make the most of those talents. They have teaching skills on a very organised basis; these skills plus extremely hard work from teachers, institutions and young musicians lead to what we hear tonight. Not one inch of it is blind “luck.” Gilels, Ashkenazy, Horowitz, Kissin ... the list is endless, and all of it the product of hard work such as most of us never dream of.

      It is normal practice to perform from memory. After learning the work we must commit to memory as the music score would only be a barrier between the music and the performer. He just knows the notes and has consciously memorised them.

    If one listens to the wide range of dynamics , the intense emotionally diverse passages that Mozart wrote for the orchestra in this work, one realises what he intended for the soloist - an intention thwarted by the limitations of the harpsichord. These intentions can now be realised with the concert grand piano - and Alexander does just that. A truly 'Mozartian' performance of the highest calibre. I do not know what extraneous forces influenced the jury in this competition, but they certainly failed where Alexander succeeded.

  • @wrxstigoabs
    @wrxstigoabs 3 года назад +20

    Wow what a passionate and consummate performance by Malofeev sadly let down by a soulless and mechanical orchestral accompaniment. This is how you’d envisage Mozart playing it with energy and liveliness. The performance is all the more remarkable coming from a boy still in his teens. He has an amazing career ahead of him as he adds depth and pathos to youthful passion and energy.

  • @thethikboy

    The performance seems re-incarnational - a youngster playing the eternal music of a composer who never grew old - with such freshness and energy - we know it's intention is Mozart's own.

  • @nogatram1
    @nogatram1 5 лет назад +169

    I do not wish to make an invidious comparison. However, I would remind those critics who are unable to stomach Alexander's place among the great pianists of the past because of his age, that Mozart's first documented composition, a Minuet and Trio in G major, is listed as KV 1 and was composed when he was just five years old. He had written 13 symphonies by the time he was 15. I merely mention this to indicate that evaluating Alexander's musical maturity and insights on the basis of his chronological age is simplistic and misguided. He is definitely 'up there' among the greats!

      @organboi 4 года назад +4

      Oh please. Do we really need a Mozart cliché mini bio? I know you don't mean to make a comparison to Mozart, but this pianist has his critics for valid reasons. I doubt people are criticizing him just because of his age. I for one think he plays a lot of music way too fast, missing out on the musical expression and depth. And I'm quite sure that won't change any time soon.

    This is the first Mozart I have herd Alexander play. He does with Mozart what he does with every other composer he plays: he raises him from the dead. His flawless technique and deep understanding of the melodic line allows his listener to forget him and encounter the author. He is a truly humble virtuoso. He doesn’t have to prove himself, he lets himself go. And in this case, Morart soars.

    much much to expect from this beautiful new pianist. I find the orchestra mediocre and the whole rendering not too good - but Alexander has told me a dozen or so new things about Mozart's 20 I didn't even started to guess... he is a real musician, not just a pianist, and he READS music creatively. No show-off, really musical statement. The phrases are very-much his. I will cherish this rendering of the concerto, even if it will probably never be counted among the "legendary performances". This one will forever remind me there is always NEW things in the old music

    Neben seiner technischen Brillanz legt Malofeev großen Wert auf musikalische Ausdruckskraft. Er versteht es, die emotionale Tiefe und Vielschichtigkeit der Stücke, die er spielt, zu erfassen und dem Publikum durch seine Interpretation nahezubringen.
    Trotz seines jungen Alters zeigt Malofeev eine bemerkenswerte Reife in seiner Herangehensweise an Musik. Er ist in der Lage, komplexe musikalische Strukturen zu analysieren und sie mit intellektueller Tiefe zu interpretieren. Kristallklarer Klang, wunderbare Balance, großartige und wohlverstandene subjektive Agogik, kluge Strukturierung, schöner, klingender, melodischer Ton, lyrische Anschlagskultur - da stimmt (fast) alles - da im Wettbewerb, muß er sich konventionell etwas zurückhalten. Würde mich sehr interessieren, wie er das Konzert heute spielt!

    Wow! Such a dazzling, exciting performance of this most modern of Mozart's symphonic works!
    We tend to think of Mozart and his early works. Meanwhile, Mozart was a genius and wrote so much.
    He was able to break "the mold of the Classical period" and put his "toe" into the stream of the Romantic period."
    Alexander is giving Mozart his best Romantic rendition of this concerto which Mozart probably did when he played it back when!
    The Alexander I know can play "the pants" off any of the great Romantic piano concertos. He astounds me to be so virtuosic in this performance of Mozart most Romantic piano concerto.
    I am sure the Alexander would play more Mozartian in any of his earlier works. Of course this is a Music Competition and he needed to pick a virtuosic Mozart Concerto. He picked well!

    Well! I say again, “Music expresses wordless odyssey’s”. ‘Ole Mozart had four more steps to the twin sister of this watermark opus; and he doubtless had little trouble getting there. This concerto always takes me back to the seventies when I first started listening to this piece on that old Montgomery Wards compact stereo record player. I spun that disc regularly and marveled every time at such a novel and modern sound. The psychological tension was unlike anything else and drama that was spine tingling delicious. The Beethoven cadenza is unsurpassed and consummate. The pianist plumbs its depths and heights with luminous skill and grace; so that all flowing in this very familiar river of sonic perfection are hearing with quickened ears and refreshed spirits. Not to mentioned how the soul is enriched! I often tell people I meet, “With all kinds of beautiful music and philosophic.” Something to add life to their day and perhaps provide a little food for thought. The Apostle John recorded in the book of Revelations how he heard “harpers harping with their harps” now that, we know, is the ultimate. And what we hear now are mere shadows of what will be! PWG

      Your compatriote Seong -Jim Cho played the same concert at the Chaikovski contest two years ago. He also had 17 then. He scored the third prize and he was as brilliant and inspiring as Malofeef here in China though I want to remark that I liked best the Chinese orchestra and his condoctor than the Russian one.

      One must be objective and have individual approach and see assets which vary and learn to admire them in their diversity. I bet chinese orchestra and its condoctor prevailed over the russian one. But it`s a mere opinion. As to the pianists they were both subtile and brilliant.

    What's Alexander doing there? Isn't he way above competition level? Doing it for fun? Even when sick (Chinese food?). Anyway I have a thought about his playing: because of his age we may not be able to tell yet (or is it me?) But he must be having a special sound, like Michelangeli, Richter, Horowitz and Rubinstein had. Or else he will develop something in his playing that's incompairable.

    Lieber Alexander, mein Lieblings-Pianokonzert von W.A. Mozart war bisher das 21. Klavierkonzert. Aber nachdem ich Deine Interpretation des 20. Pianokonzert von W.A.M. gehört habe, bin ich um ein Klavierkonzert reicher. Vielen Dank!
