Nice video. I love that you used an old school quill float. It's what I used to use in when I was in New Plymouth (NZ) where the gardies there are called Piper. Garfish were the subject of a fishing ban here in WA and it's just been lifted. You've inspired me to get out and have a Gardie session. I've just made some new peacock quill floats ready to go.
Awesome mate. I'm glad to hear you guys can fish for them again. They are a great little fish to catch. There is something about watching a float go under that's very addictive. Hope you get into a few.
G'day mate. A couple of years ago [ about 50 ] when I was doing my apprenticeship we had a couple of Doctors that used to go out from the Marina every 5 weeks when they had there rotation days. They would go out & back 3 days and catch nothing but Gar's. When we had to clean their boat it was sprayed in Garfish scale's, it was a shit of a job but that's what apprentice's used to do. The Dr's would get an esky full each day.
Yeah can get very messy. I know the sea garfish with the long beak drop there scales real easily. The snub nose garfish scales seam to not fall off as easily, which is a good thing.
There is a little rubber sleeve on the float . You pass your line through it and this fixed the float to your line ad ots tight fitting. With a little force you can adjust your depth
HI MATE. Have you been down chasing the gar at all ? i see they are still getting a few snapper down there , i have been after the whiting the last month or so i should pull out the snapper rods and have a go ,have you tried lately those bloody big Caties will be around as well. Cheers keen to hear back. Chris
Hey mate. Have stocked up on gar for winter bait and a few good feeds. Thinking might try for snapper with leading up to the full moon. Have not had much success with whiting on surface lures this year. The water has been realy discoloured with all this rain.
Hi no need to be sorry thank you for your question. The bag limit is 50 per person I normly limit myself to 20 or 30 which works out to be enough for a feed for 4 people fresh the same day and a few of the smaller ones kept for snapper or tailor bait. I always have an ice bottle or two in the esky to keep them fresh. I'm fortunate enough to only live 1km from my fishing spot so no need to feel the freezer I just go fishing for them when I need some
@ScaleUpadventures I worded that completely wrong! I'm sorry, that's not what I was asking. I was trying to word it nicely, I'm not sure how RUclips works with filtering. I'll be blunt, do you st@b them in the head or just throw them in the esky with some ice? Reason I ask is I love fishing, but I normally throw back because I'm not good at the ending life part. But I wanted to catch some for bait, so I could just throw them in the esky like you did that would work. Thanks so much for your reply!
Nice work i am pretty sure they called them Miniature Marlin, you can see why hey, great vid ,are they around all year round ? Keey up the good work cheers Chris.
Definitely catchable year round. I normly only target them in warmer months. In winter I find I get plagued by tiny bream. I have head winter off redcliffe pier is good for them bit haven't tried it out myself as yet.
I Know what you mean every time it starts to clean up it rains again, Noosa was going well till they got 85 mm overnight and with that the rubbish moved in, small bream ,stingrays . Cheers Chris
Yeah these are called snub-nosed garfish. Short beaks they don't get as long but tend to be a little more thicker. We also get sea garfish here mixed in .
good old galvanized bucket I use the same. They don't crack like plastic one and get years of use out of them. Only Latte drinkers care what it looks like hahaha.
Hi mate yes these are snub nose garfish. Othe then the shorter bill and been a little thicker in build they are identical to your sea garfish. We get a mix of both of them up here
Thanks mate. I prefer to brain spike most of my fish. Trying to do that with slippery garfish is not easy and tend to slip out of your hands and down through the rocks. I find if you put them in ice they die really fast.
Thanks might give it a go next time. Not sure how far out I will be able to cast. And soon as the bait sinks further then a foot or two down the undersized bream are all over it.
That's the calmest freshly caught fish I ever seen.
Cheers
That bucket belongs in a museum
😆
I have always enjoyed fishing for gars. Nice vid.
Thank you. Yeah even though they are small fish they are a lot of fun to catch.
Great video explaining how to catch garfish very informative and a lot of fun doing it
Cheers mate
Great video mate. They are on my bucket list. I have the same esky and the lid came off too.
Thank you. Yes that esky is a bit of a pain. I used it as a seat once and that was the end of the lid. Still a good little esky though
So much fun chasing gar! top vid mate
Thank you I've always enjoyed catching them
Brilliant video mate, no crap, straight to the point, informative and practical information. 👏👏👏. Any chance of doing a video on how you fillet them?
Thanks Peter appreciate it. I have actually done a filleting garfish video a while back.. ruclips.net/video/_l3WztWw7Ck/видео.html

Amazing technique
Thank you
So much fun. Great work

Wow superb idea .
Thank you
You done amazing work.
Thank you
This is the masterplan for hunting fish
Thanks
my grandfather would put cotton wool in the dough to help keep the dough on the hook.
I have heard of that trick. Have never tried it. might have to give it a go
Do you have a float stopper at the top of the floats or a swivel?
Using a quill float fixed with a rubber sleeve. I use a swivel just below the float
@@ScaleUpadventures thanks for the reply mate. Might be silly question, but what stops the float from going up all the way up your line?
There is a little rubber sleeve on the float . You pass your line through it and this fixed the float to your line ad ots tight fitting. With a little force you can adjust your depth
@@ScaleUpadventures thanks that makes a lot of sense. Cheers!
Nice job buddy
Thank you

Sorry for ignorance, do you have to kill them all? Or are you just putting them on ice?

@@ScaleUpadventures Thank's for the reply mate, you find the snapper love them as well,do you use them whole (3 hook rig )
Yeah I have had good success on them whole on gangs for snapper in the bay and sweetlip. They are also pretty good for tailor in the surf over winter.
I Know what you mean every time it starts to clean up it rains again, Noosa was going well till they got 85 mm overnight and with that the rubbish
moved in, small bream ,stingrays .
Cheers Chris
Hopefully we get some good weather soon. We are definitely over due
i love fishing
Thank you
Hi mate , where is that ?
Just north of Brisbane area
Super trick 👌
Thanks I think
Which town are you in?
Brisbane area
different beaks to Adelaide ones.
Yeah these are called snub-nosed garfish. Short beaks they don't get as long but tend to be a little more thicker. We also get sea garfish here mixed in .
LOL could you have chosen a worse bucket dear Liza, dear Liza
Haha it's a much loved bucket will keep on using it .
Haha I thought the same, thats a damn nasty bucket. lol
Ofcourse it is its a burley bucket. Perfect for the job until it get a hole in it.
good old galvanized bucket I use the same. They don't crack like plastic one and get years of use out of them. Only Latte drinkers care what it looks like hahaha.
🤣🤣🙌
Look different to the ones we get in SA. Yours dont seem to have much of a bill
Hi mate yes these are snub nose garfish. Othe then the shorter bill and been a little thicker in build they are identical to your sea garfish. We get a mix of both of them up here
This some different way to fishing
How so float fishing is pretty common.
Wow you are really intelligent
Hahaha
While fishing on a wharf i got lucky and found a whole school, cautht about 30 until the kingies spooked em
Would have been good to chuck one on as a live bait
I hate leaving my fish to suffocate like that to death. But great informative video, thanks.
Thanks mate. I prefer to brain spike most of my fish. Trying to do that with slippery garfish is not easy and tend to slip out of your hands and down through the rocks. I find if you put them in ice they die really fast.
nah man what u really need is no sinker nothing but that small hook break or doe or how ever u spell it
Thanks might give it a go next time. Not sure how far out I will be able to cast. And soon as the bait sinks further then a foot or two down the undersized bream are all over it.
those are ballyhoos
They sure are. We call them garfish in Australia
