I was rejected from Oxford: Why I'm Not Reapplying, Gaining Closure and Dealing with Rejection ✨

  • As you probably know, last year I applied to Oxford university for Biological Sciences. I was rejected after interviews, which kinda definitely crushed me at the time. 🤷‍♀️😂🙈 At the end of the day, more people get rejected than accepted, so I think it's important to have an open chat about dealing with rejection and gaining closure! 💛 You're more than an institution, and just because you aren't what they're looking for at that moment, it doesn't mean you can't go on to be super successful!
    Some Qs answered:
    Do I regret applying?
    Why am I not reapplying?
How do you find the motivation to apply if you're scared of being rejected?
How did I deal with rejection and how emotionally draining it was?
How did I tell my family/friends/teachers and was I embarrassed?
Was I jealous of other people who did get in?
Hit that thumbs up if you'd like a second video exploring more of the Qs on my Instagram! 👍 xx

I’d also like to mention that not getting into Oxford for undergrad studies as Jade said is a huge challenge, with an acceptance rate of only 20ish%. Being rejected doesn’t mean you’re NOT good enough for Oxford, it just means the people selecting there thought you may not fit into the tutorial system as well as they’d like you to. BUT REMEMBER, it’s far easier to go to Oxford later on in life, when you’re more mature and even more knowledgeable, for a PhD, DPhil or MBA!!! These degrees are actually more value for money, as they’re research degrees, which is what Oxford is ultimately best known for!!! Keep smashing it Jade! Moral of the story: Don’t let one rejection, when you’re a 17 year old, get to you!!!

    • @KJ-js7pi
      @KJ-js7pi 5 лет назад +17

While Oxford's research and its research degrees are renowned worldwide, it's actually its undergraduate tutorial system which is what makes it so special. No other university, other than Cambridge, offer it and it's what makes an undergraduate place so coveted for the most academically capable students. And if you're a UK/EU student, it's some of the best value for money you can get due to the close attention paid to you by tutors and leaders in the academic field. There's much more independence and less contact time when you complete a postgraduate degree so it's completely wrong for you to say that you get more value for money than an undergrad degree.
While I support your sentiment, it's not right to spread misinformation and lies in order to console someone. Someone who has already gained closure from the experience and is therefore better from it.

20%.......god.............any other US students just :""") the US uni system sucks, best schools have rates of ~2-3% and cost 3x as much
like, this isn't to say that a lower acceptance rate means its a "better" school - the system here is just so whack that they artificially deflate their acceptance rates by outreach and trying to get as many people to apply as possible so they can reject more people, but. dang.
(actually looking at Oxford for grad school, and definitely agree that undergrad school name doesn't matter as much if you know you're going to more education beyond that)

@@KJ-js7pi Hi KJ, I speak from experience being an undergraduate at Cambridge, having worked with numerous PhD/Postdocs here at Cambridge and Oxford in labs. The supervision system is by all means one of the best parts about the Cambridge system, but I honestly think Oxbridge's strength lies in their post-graduate research and innovation :)

I have a lot of respect to people who have applied/are applying to Oxbridge, no matter whether the result is a rejection or an acceptance. I couldn't apply because i couldn't handle that academic pressure. No matter the outcome be proud of yourself, because it is a difficult process and it is worth trying if you really want it. UnJaded Jade Most people get rejected first time.
I got rejected from Cambridge first time.
      It’s a test.
There is never a firm offer.
Biological science is vague, if you didn’t have a plan up to PhD you are stuffed.
Oxford is research based and over rated.
Leeds is better for Biology, by a massive margin.

I finished my A Levels in 2015 and my dream was to go to Birmingham. I knew I wanted to take a gap year anyway, but I decided to put off applying to uni until my gap year so I could focus on getting the grades I needed. I ended up not getting them and was absolutely distraught. I still applied to Birmingham anyway, but, as expected, I was rejected, and that feeling that you described is all too real and vivid. It consumed my life for so long and it always haunted me in the worst of times. I'm now on my year abroad (I study languages) and I look back at my life and how much I have achieved and am so proud of myself for having got through that. I think rejection is a very important thing to experience, because it teaches you the life lesson that hard work does not always equal great results. Thank you for making this video, it is so much more necessary than you realise.

I really love this comment. I've never seen this channel before, but this video was recommended to me for some reason. I saw your comment and have to say - trust me: not getting into the university you wanted is a blessing in disguise! Now you are taking a year abroad, which will bring you so much growth as a person. Also, I wanted to go to Birmingham too. I had my heart completely set on it. I got rejected, and I was crushed. Then I went to see Aston University, and I actually fell in love with how real and urban/central it was. Less pretentious too. I spent the most amazing four years there, made the most beautiful friends, and had such an incredible time. So, whatever you decide to do from here, don't worry at all about not getting into your first choice of University. Honestly, 10 years from now, you'll see why it was actually exactly what was meant to happen! I just wanted to say that to you! Good luck!

Jade this is an important topic. You are so brave for sharing such personal stuff as many people refrain from talking about rejection, and focus largely on the success part of the story. Let me say, it is OK to be rejected often and early because as you mentioned you "learned a lot from the process". That's absolutely true. Rejection is harsh, but actually is also a room for growth. Good to be rejected early and often because it equips the person with lessons, sometimes without knowing it. Personally, I haven't got rejected at early stages in my academic life, but got rejected at later stage during the postgraduate. I can tell you it was harsh. At that stage I never felt that I am psychologically ready for rejection thanks to my past experience. Therefore, it took me longer than expected to accept rejection. Yet, to be honest, I am thankful for that experience because it made me a better person of me in many ways, not necessarily in academia. Best of luck, Aisha

Hello! This vid just made me have some thoughts that I thought I'd share :)
    1) My big bro went to Oxford so I felt a bit of pressure to apply (both from myself but also from my school, particularly one teacher) but decided against it because the course wasn't quite what I wanted - I don't know if I would've been successful (probably not!) but I think it's super important to not just apply because 'it's Oxbridge'!
    2) I was 'rejected' by LSE because I had taken Drama @ AS level (despite having all As!) and was really gutted, but that taught me that it wasn't the uni for me - I truly think everyone ends up where is best for them and their interests/personality! I think I was dwelling too much on the reputation of the 'top' universities.
    3) My mum always told me to stop saying 'rejected' as it's v negative but instead to say that you weren't chosen - that helped me mentally too!
Am in my third year @ Queen Mary University of London (a Russell Group uni in my favourite city which is slightly more chilled & is just perfect for me) and I absolutely love it, so things definitely work out for the best! Best of luck to anyone applying for Oxbridge/uni x

For this I need to thank you massively because this experience has been so rewarding!!

This was all too relatable, especially the taboo nature of high academics taking a gap year. I was originally accepted to the United States Military Academy, but ended up getting medically disqualified and then forced into a gap year. It’s so great to listen to your growth through your year so far - I’ve come to many of the same realizations on my channel as well! Keep it up, so nice to see I’m not alone on this journey :)
I also just posted my reaction to my Yale rejection for this year’s admissions cycle. I mentioned something very similar to your comment at the end screen - it’s not where you go, it’s what you do and who you are.

This time last year when you mentioned applying, I commented saying how brave you were and that even if you got rejected it was inspiring. Now this year I've applied Oxford and am waiting to hear back from my interview but I have no idea what I'll do if I do get an offer or if I don't. Seeing someone as intelligent, kind and sensitive as you has inspired me to take the route for me - I've learnt that it is just a University and you've given me the courage to choose what's best for me.

Jade, BLESS YOU for videos like this. I'm currently waiting for a response from Oxford, and as you may know, the anxiety and fear of disappointing those that expect me to get in, is building in. I am SO impatient to get that email on the 9th of January to just release the stress and tension, and at the same time I never want to receive it, because as long as I don't know, I can still expect to maybe get in. But this has helped me a lot to realise that, whatever the outcome, just having reached the interview stage is already a pretty big achievement (esp since I'm an International student) and there really is no reason to be ashamed of a negative result. Please, make another video like this, the Internet world needs more of your honesty, kindness and spontaneity!

Although these are good I’m struggling a lot to come to terms with the disappointment about my history, as I’ve always been a 9 student and I feel as though I wasted all my time revising it just to get a 7... idk these results are getting me down a lot so far but I’ll probably update this as I get more back. Thank you so much for this video, even though I’m from the states and applied to a state college, when I got rejected I felt so embarrassed and worthless about it. I had no idea what direction to turn in terms of the following months and I strongly considered lying to the people around me, that knew I had applied, about being rejected and instead saying I just decided not to go. Watching you and the way you have accepted the rejection with grace makes me reflect on myself and realize that I should be open about my rejection too. Thank you ❤️

One of the first people here, I've been waiting for this video since I received my rejection on the day before my birthday this year. I'm sad that you're not reapplying, as I am, because I would have loved to see you at university if we were both to get in! I just had my (second round of) interviews and they were difficult but definitely less terrifying and flummoxing than last year. I hope that this time, I've done enough. I thought this was such a mature and retrospective way of looking at the Oxford process; it is awful, and for months after being rejected this year I thought that was the end/definition of me being 'academic'. I'm reapplying because I'm on a gap year and it made sense after my A Level grades (A*A*A), and I had the time to go through the whole palaver this side of 2018 because unlike you, I'm not travelling until the New Year. I'm hoping to go to Durham if it doesn't work out though...loved this vid (+ you for your positivity, resilience and inner beauty) xx

    • @JudyNepune

That's so sad to hear, but honey, trust me, there was a reason that it worked out like it did! Because in 5 years, on whichever lifepath you are, you will be so happy that it turned out the way it did! I also got rejected from my dream university and uni was sometimes quite hard (a lot of anxiety and self-worth issues) and I am sharing my experiences on my RUclips channel! Would love, if you could check it out, because I see so many students identifying themselves with their performance at uni. It is just so wrong and society makes us think that this is the only way we should see ourselves, beginning with parents, teachers and the job market etc. There is so much out in the world that has to be explored and performing great at school or uni is just one thing. Work hard, but do never identify yourself with it because you are such a strong worthy person that was put on the planet for a greater cause! Love, Judy :*

Have literally been waiting for this since the instagram post. I’ve already mentioned it a few times (apparently I just LOVE to talk about being rejected haha), but I was rejected pre-interview this year for biochem. I remember watching your video on your rejection last year and although I felt immensely sad for you, it’s true that I didn’t understand what it feels like at all. Unless you’ve gone through the rejection yourself, you have absolutely no idea just how heartbreaking it could feel. Your story just reminds me of my rejection day so much, I’d been refreshing my emails all week and on the Thursday I finished early and when I got home, went to put my bag in my room to find my mum had put a letter on my desk. I read it and just felt my heart drop. I went through to tell my mum and pretty much managed “i didn’t ge-“ before i burst out sobbing haha (also I couldn’t tell my dad either and had to get my mum to tell him). I text a few friends to tell them and spend the night pretty much rehearsing how to tell my teachers. The next day, I tried just completely ignore it (even to people I’d already texted the news to) but as soon as someone started with the sympathy I immediately started crying, even weeks on! Anyway, aside from telling my story I just wanted to say that if anyone reads this that has just been rejected or if anyone reads this in January, it gets so much better. Rejection made me instantly question my intelligence, doubt my worth and caused me to constantly wonder what the point in working hard is when it doesn’t seem to ‘pay off’. I was so so so so wrong and can’t stress it enough. Oxbridge is not everything. It’s not a reflection on either your self worth or your intellect. You are infinitely smarter and more amazing than you know. Give it time x
