- In this video I showe how I bypassed the radiator transmission cooler. I mounted a "Long Tru-Cool 4588" external transmission cooler. I did NOT mount this unit in the spot that most people who do this mod might theirs. I wanted my install to be (for the most part) bolt in.

So I finally did it. I fit the 4589 by relocating the horn. This thing is pulling my 6800lbs trailer with the coolest temps ever. Just drove from Georgia to New Hampshire in 90 degrees heat no problem. Thanks for this vid. It inspired me.

WOW!!! Thanks for this recommendation, and installation demonstration!! This will be the first thing that I do on my Titan, (and, a list of several other necessities)!!! Many years ago I owned the smaller Nissan truck, and one day I looked at the Coolant reservoir, and it looked like a chocolate milkshake, in there!!!.... "Boom!".... This was the result of loosing Transmission fluid, into the water/glycol system, thru an internal leak, within the radiator!!....IMHO: Nissan should've fixed this "risky" design, from day One!...

Toyota's hold their value for a reason, they are well built.
Nissan prior to year 2000 was parallel to Toyota. Year 2000+ Nissans (unless you can repair them yourself) are money pits.
Did you know 1997 Toyota 4runner had the same death wish. I installed external on it.....👍 but the frame didnt last......😣
Ha, not a Nissan only problem. The radiator manuf is obviously trash and actually has nothing to do with Nissan's design.
Added the External Cooler, Took the transmission pan down to clean it, put everything back on my 2005 Titan and got a P0720 Code (output sensor) making the truck shifts bog on lower gears. Checked my fluid level, Checked for leaks, and cleared the code but it would come back after 2-4 miles. Never had this code before, did anyone else get this? how did you fix it? I searched for repair tips, but didn't find anything that helped specifically for titan/armada repair p0720 code. Should have just added the cooler and not messed with taking down the pan to clean it.
Hi, my 2012 Armada transmission needs to be rebuilt. This is my first automatic vehicle, don't know much about them. By doing it your way, the transmission fluid is getting only air cooled by the 2 air coolers? One oem air cooler and the additional you just installed? And you cut out the cooling (with fluid coolant) from main radiator? Just trying to understand when getting in discussion with the guys who will rebuild it. I think this is a must do in my case as well. They may already know this, since they told me over the phone they did work on Titan transmissions before. Thanks a lot.
That is correct.
This is to prevent the on going transmission problems that armadas have where the seal from one of lines crack and leak Coolant into the transmission and basically blow out the tranny? I think I am having symptoms of this on my armada already and don’t want to replace the whole transmission the problem isn’t as bad as others it only slips when it first started up and gets up to speeds of 50-60! And then slips for about 10 seconds then completely stops rhen it drives fine. I’ve flushed and filled atf and filter for tranny already didn’t fix the problem but I can tel the previous owner never changed the tranny fluid
Yes, this is to prevent that issue. LUCAS makes a trans treatment (Stop Slip) that worked a miracle in our Suburban with a slipping transmission. I poured one bottle in it back in 2009, and here we are in 2021 and the Suburban is still going strong.
I dig your videos. I am putting in my transmission cooler tonight I got the exact same one you have. I am pulling a Grey Wolf 21rr toy hauler with my Armada and the transmission gets warm on big hills. I am hoping this solves the problem for me. I just picked up the 2006 Armada to pull the camper and your videos have been crazy helpful. I am curios how much the transmission cooler fan helped in heavy traffic. I don't plan to be in heavy traffic pulling the camper but you just never know.
Just an update I ended up ordering the 4454 on accident and it is a little taller. But I found I could mount it behind the hood latch using the horn bolt and the mounting bracket for the cooler to the right of the hood latch using the bars provided with no drilling. I looked at your later video and bypassed all of the factory hoses and went direct to the transmission. I found that mounting the transmission cooler right in front of the radiator the main fan draws air across the fins rather nice and the transmission is cooler than ever. Side note my thermal fan clutch was also bad so when I hit stop and go traffic my engine and transmission were both overheating but the new thermal fan clutch fixed the issue and took about 45 min to replace. Thanks again for the inspiration it got me back on track.
@@andyfisher1136 so did you bypass the radiator cooler? Also how did it pull the toy hauler? i have 08 titan and a travel trailer, trans gets warm with were pulling it through hill country.
@@ssmartass247 I did bypass the factory cooler and also make sure you remove all the old hoses or you will get trans fluid all over the bottom of your car. I pulled that camper to Colorado and it did amazing I never had an issue with heat in the transmission and the Armada pulled the camper very nice.
@@andyfisher1136 I just finished mine. And yes I should have plugged the two male connecters on the bottom before taking it for a test drive .. the remaining fluid shot all over the place . Thanks for the response! Wish me luck on my trip this weekend!

thinking about picking up an Armada to replace my wrecked Pathfinder and have a few questions if you do not mind.
I am aware of the leaking stock internal cooler but was wondering if the stock set ups come with an external cooler already?
another question is if it is possible to fit the cooler vertically rather than horizontally like your set up? or behind the hood latch support
the one thing I would change about your set up is replacing that plastic sleeve you put around the hard line with some split old rubber transmission hose
I have been hotrodding a long time and use that method even for electrical wiring in my 68' Electra because it resists chemicals, heat and abrasion a lot better.

And yes, the Armadas and Titans come with a rather large external cooler sandwiched between the radiator and condenser.
Also, you can mount the cooler vertically or even with the inlet and outlet facing upwards.
I have a 2010 Nissan titan only 51,000 miles would it be possible just to change to a newer radiator and eliminate the cooler Leak to the transmission
Did that work for the transmission gauge not to rise up .. I have a 2012 Nissan Armada and the transmission temperature rises up will this help
It could, depends on what you issue actually is. Is your fluid at the proper level, transmission not already worn, etc.
The temperature of the fluid will rise on hills and when pulling heavy loads. If it's overheating, then there's a problem. I pull a 7x12 regularly now with no over heating issues. But I've never had any over heating issues in the past either.

Would you recommend this or a CSF 3328 radiator? My truck has 170k on the original radiator and I don’t want to go too ham and ruin my transmission.
The one with the metal tanks?. I'd go with the CSF with metal tanks over this. If you do a lot of towering, I'd run the extra external cooler in conjunction.

How is your trans temp while sitting in traffic being that far away from the radiator, and fans? Every auto trans cooler I've ever done suggested getting it as close to the radiator as possiable to get the air flow from the fan in city or stop and go traffic.
All is well. Remember, the Armadas and Titans come with a LARGE factory installed air-to-fluid transmission cooler sandwiches between the condenser and radiator. My added cooler supplements that one. I eventually added a fan to the cooler, but so far it has only kicked on once. That was when I was intentionally trying to heat up transmission to the point where the fans thermostat was triggered simply to test it. It was a HOT summer day in traffic and it took significant effort to get it that hot.
@@97TRAKIN good to know, I am deleting my factory tranny cooler, since that seems to be the number 1 issue with the Titans, cracking and the coolent getting sucked into the transmission.... preventative measure, will run just the aftermarket transmission cooler

There are two OEM coolers. One is a "fluid to fluid" that is INSIDE the bottom tank of the radiator, and the other is a "air to fluid" cooler that is sandwiched between the radiator and condenser.
I bypassed the "fluid to fluid" cooler and installed another "air to fluid" cooler to do its job. My truck now runs two "air to fluid" coolers. One is factory and the other I installed.

@@mikas-cl7sz I suggest just letting the fluid flow without any additional valves to open and close etc. The cooler that I used has variable size passages. When the fluid is cold/thick, it restricts the flow through the narrower passages thus lessening the amount of cooling. When the fluid warms up/thins out it can then pass through the narrower passages easily thus increasing the amount of cooling. It is self temperature regulating.
VI Tinker Tank nice video!! Also confused about the air to fluid cooler. I’m doing the job as we speak. The returning line goes to the air to fluid tank then from there another line goes back to the transmission correct? I haven’t spoted where I need run the line from my new external cooler yet.

This might be a dumb question but I'm just starting to look into this issue for my father's Frontier. He's already starting to get some hard shifting which hopefully isn't a sign of me being too late. Anyway, why would you install an external cooler if it already has an external stock cooler?
By bypassing the in-radiator cooler, you are bypassing some of the transmission's cooling ability. Adding another external cooler restores that which was lost.
Frontiers have an external trans cooler yes but I'm guessing the bigger trucks don't.

Great video. Very informative. I have a 2004. Never had an issue with radiator or mixing of the fluids, but 2 years ago, I accidentally snapped a nipple under the radiator filler neck that goes to the expansion tank. So, I had to purchase a new radiator (CSF model on Rockauto). I don't tow anything, it doesn't have the tow package (so I don't have a transmission fluid temp gauge), but I live in South Texas. Do you think it's something I should do to my truck? I just hit 130K miles on the odometer. It is a 17 year old truck and it drives great. Thanks again for a great video.

So it goes transmission, radiator atf cooler, then external air cooler. But you bypassed the radiator cooler?
The "fluid-to-fluid cooler that's inside the radiator" was completely bypassed. The Titan and Armada come from the factory with an air-to-fluid cooler in addition to the one inside the radiator. I simply added another external air-to-fluid cooler to make up for bypassing the fluid-to-fluid cooler.
I barely had to add any fluid to the system. How much you have to add is 100% dependent on how much you lose during the install. Just check the transmission fluid level via the dip-stick and add if needed.
This modification is done to avoid destroying the transmission when the fluid-to-fluid cooler fails resulting in coolant entering the transmission.
Great Video...Im getting ready to perform this MOD on my 2007 Armada LE with 141,000 Miles. Couple questions if you don't mind. How did you mount the bottom of the Tran cooler? Also which side of the OEM radiator does the transmission fluid enter (Driver or Passenger side). Thank you in advance.
The botton of the trans cooler slides behind what I think is an airbag crash sensor. It sandwiches it and holds it securely.
I think the fluid enters the driver's side, but I'll double check and get back with. you.
@@97TRAKIN I performed the Modification this morning. Only difference is that I Plumed the Trans Cooler after the OEM Trans Cooler since I am pretty sure the Aftermarker Cooler is more efficient at removing heat. Thanks Again for your great videos. You are my go to guy for Armada How To's.

Where did you get the kit?
I purchased the cooler from Amazon and hoses from Advanced Auto. I also purchased some fuel injection hose clamps from Advanced Auto as they are better than regular hose clamps.
You can use any "oil" cooler that'll fit, but the brand and model that I went with is the one that is popular with Titan and Armada owners.
Does this effectively eliminate the strawberry milkshake of death that affected nissan titans/armadas?

Didn’t know the the Titans and Armadas suffered the same issue. Being the 3rd owner of a 2008 Pathfinder, The previous owner had the transmission and radiator replaced by Nissan thankfully. However my timing chain guides do whine. Yay! :(
@@elonsus9747 Brace yourself for the cost of the timing chain replacement. My regular mechanic won't do timing chains. My 2005 Frontier, whines at 100K, my local dealer wants $4100 for timing chain r&r, $1800 of it is labor.

What size line is required?
The size line that I used was ever slightly too large. It's works, but in order to ensure no leaks the clamps are maxed out. I will get you the correct hose size value.

Yes I did, but not a lot. About half a quart.

Of course that'll depend on how much you lose while the lines are disconnected. I stuck bolts in my lines while they were disconnected to limit how much fluid I lost. Either way, be sure to check your fluid level and top up accordingly 👌.
What transmission fluid did you use?
I use any brand name full synthetic fluid that has Nissan type J, S, etc.... listed on the back.
I called my local dealer to see if they could install an external transmission cooler and they told me the truck already has one and doesn't need it. That true?
The Armadas and Titans do indeed already have a factory external cooler. But if you're going to "bypass the in-radiator transmission cooler", you'll need an additional external cooler, TRUST ME ON THAT ONE.
VI Tinker Tank so was this external cooler in the video above, replacing the in-radiator cooler you’re talking about? Sorry new to the truck scene but my transmission just went out because of the faulty radiator line so I’m gonna do this asap
There is only one trans cooler and its right next to the one your installing..
There is a cooler behind the condenser? For the trans.
The truck has a factory air to liquid transmission cooler that's a little smaller than the additional one I installed.
There are actually three of them. One for the transmission, one for the engine oil and one for the power steering fluid.

Sadly no. The are a magnitude of cooler styles and ways/positions to mount a cooler. You have to pick the cooler type and location that you prefer. The way I did it is to give people another idea other than the typical location where others have mounted theirs. Good luck 👍.

@@97TRAKINI read in the Armada and qx56 forums and didn't see much there about this recall. The radiator styles are built differently. Armadas/qx56 seem to built beefier than the weak Pathfinder/xterras radiators. Either way, I'll upgrade to external anyway because I am adding an electrical fan to the condenser. Sitting in city traffic in 110 heat, I can tell the ac feels warm.
