  • Just a quick video explaining how I unstuck the wheel of my rototiller after it had rusted itself onto the driveshaft.

You're lucky. On our TroyBilt Big Red, we tried welding lugs onto the wheel "pipe" and using a puller, we tried a propane torch for long periods of time, my husband made a big "pickle fork" and placed it between the wheel and the cast-iron transmission, and pounded away with a 3 pound hammer. Nothing worked. Finally hauled it to the tire place and they changed the tire while the wheel was still on the tiller.

Surprising the cast transmission housing didn't break. Good you found a fix !

That's not a rim, it's a wheel. Every wheel has a rim around its outer perimeter.
Whenever tip a mower, tiller or something on its side, tip the direction that doesn't lead to engine oil leaking into the air filter.
    Thanks for the information.

Wish it was that easy for me. Have an old Troy Bilt Pony tiller and it looks darn near impossible to remove the wheel that is rusted on. There is no inner c clip. Tried using a gear puller and heating with a propane torch with penetrating oil soaking in for a week.

Same here. Did you ever succeed? If so, any tips that finally broke it free?

Try the Hot / Cold Method.... Tips: Get a Torch and heat around it until RED HOT... DO NOT heat the Axle. Once it's HOT, use Cold Water with Garden Hose or Bucket and splash it really quick. Once you are cool down, now try it again.... If that doesn't work, do it again, sometimes 2-3X will do it!!! By using Hot / Cold method, you are expanding / contracting the " rust "! *NOTE:* *Remove ALL the Air out of your Tire when doing this method!*

The hot cold method has worked well for me if Aero- Kroil does not work. I use map gas for the heating process. I also use a large cup of freezer cold water. After removal, I clean the parts up and coat with anti siege before installing the rim/tire

As per the manufacturer's web site, WD40 is NOT a penetrating oil. You would have been much better served with PB Blaster.

What a ridiculous design. Stupid engineers, making it a two hour job to get a tire off of a piece of equipment. The rim on my troy bilt would not come off, so I removed the tire, cut away the rim with a grinder, leaving only the axle portion. Then I cut that lengthwise, tapped the cut not too hard with a cold chisel, and then, finally, my puller removed what was left.
I'm going to reduce the diameter of the axle enough so my new wheel will slip on and off-- a retaining clip through the hole will keep it in place.

Man what a bummer. I'm sorry to hear that you had such a difficult time. I sold this tiller a while back but I do miss tinkering with it. My next project will be a wood chipper/shredder. Like that will be any less of a headache?...lol Take care and thanks for watching :)

I have this tiller 1987. Can it be re-pwered? If so, what is a good replacement

    • @georget9430
      @georget9430  4 года назад +1

Hi China, It is possible to replace the engine if that's what your asking but you may lose the reverse function. This Indian Engine came with a secondary shaft which enables the tiller to travel in reverse through a series of belts and pulleys when physically engaged. You may be able to get the original rebuilt if available, and on occasion find a good used or even new replacement with the same secondary shaft but it may be costly. Many people have purchased the Harbor Freight Predator 6.5 HP engine which works great but does NOT have the secondary shaft. You would then lose your reverse capabilities. The quality and price of a Predator engine is definitely unbeatable. I believe they even come with a decent warranty, and you can also acquire a 20% off coupon to the cost of the engine :)

@@georget9430 Thanks for the info. I'm going to find a replacement crankcase cylinder asbly and re build it. Spindles broke off cylinder asbly which the ignition module bolts into.

@@carljung6087 man that sucks! I've never seen that one before but anything is possible. Yeah, these old tiller's can take a serious beating. Well good luck Carl :D... By the way, did I get your name wrong? If so sorry about that mate...lol ;)

most are not that easy. some are seized so bad you will use heat , pb blaster, puller and do it again and again.Anti- seize really good idea after you have cleaned the rust off the shaft. thanks for the video anyway.
