    From the home of Mercedes (Stuttgart/Germany)A r4 or v6 Diesel engine with plug in hybrid would be nice, because it is much more efficient than the v6 gasoline engine and if you put the v6 Diesel engine with these electric engines, you will hav more than enough torque.(Sorry for my bad English)

    To the question: I'd LOVE to see this technology with a small 4 cylinder engine, but not exactly in it's current form, and not the way you think.
    Now, imagine the next-gen A45 and CLA45 with their current engine, BUT with an electric motor strapped to the otherwise huge turbocharger, regulating the speed of the compressor, and basically taking the role of a traditional wastegate, and occasionally acting like a huge dynamo, recovering energy....This, with an other motor in the transmission, occasionally recovering energy during braking(so basically what I'm asking for is the current Formula-1 technology in mass production).
    The results:
    Farewell to turbo lag with an otherwise heavily turbocharged engine, massive improvements in terms of emission and range, instantaneous torque off the line. The only question is, how well it would get along with an AMG badge(mind you, there's already a car with both similar tech and an AMG badge, it's not quiet road legal, but it's pretty successful at what it's doing).

    I'm a tech guy, and a car guy and a SUV fan, so I'd would want to see this car, and any other car, with a smaller engine (such as a 6 cylinder diesel) and a well balanced electric engine capable to deliver about 70kgfm (aprox. 490Nm) of torque for a car like this. And both engines should be able to work together, real hybridness.
    And I'm from Brazil (a country with barely no incentives for electric or hybrid motors - i.e. making the Prius cost about the same as Chevy Colorado [S10 here])

      +jorge chiu Can't say that you lose anything by going to the PHEV. You will never be out of energy and thus stranded (unless you run the gas tank dry:)) because it is a PHEV. The only downsides are two:
      - What is the EV charging infrastructure Guatemala
      - Is the potential benefit of driving on EV worth the added cost in your specific case?

    I currently drive a glk250bt and would be very excited to see a Diesel engine (250 or 350) + electric assist variant. As well as adding to the already eco friendly 28-30mpg the introduction of an electric motor would add that little bit of horsepower the glk250 lacks.

  • @unitedstatesofamerica9363

    The old ml550 now known as Gle was a very good sporty SUV without stepping up to the AMG model. The 4.7L v8 was a nice engine it was smooth and powerful. Now that the Gle has a v6 hybrid and as you mentioned that not all of the battery power can be used from the batteries, the Mercedes lineup is losing a base v8 and although the new gle500 has 400 plus horse power and 479 lbft of tourque, a twin turbo v6 can never match what a v8 can do. I personally Wouk love to see the hybrid setup much like on the Porsche 918 or LaFerrari variant set up. So a naturally aspirated v8 with hybrid system. Add AMG to the mix and it will give everyone a run for there money. Mercedes could add the M157 5.5L unit from sl63 that has 557 horsepower and 664lbft of tourque paired with electric motors giving it 600+ horsepower and 700+ tourque. Even better idea for mercedes would be bring back the mighty and awesome m156 engine. The 6.2 l naturally aspirated engine paired with electric motors would be amazing. Not only do you get the sound of the engine but also insane amours of power and for environmentalists peace if mind that even with a fire breathing roaring engine, when coupled with electric motors it gets 30mpg and 30km or 18mi of electric range. Us petrol heads are happy the environmentalists are happy it's a win win

    My answer to your question: I think that Mercedes should offer Hybrid technology on their many different engine choices just as frequently as they do with something like 4MATIC. I live in Upstate New York, and there are many beautiful back roads where all you want is a "big honkin V8" and some paddle shifters. But, there are city centers such as New York City, Albany, etc., where EV mode is all you need. My idea is why not offer a Hybrid option on all engines, even AMG-level vehicles, for in the city. This would greatly reduce the pollution rate in populated cities, and make it a bit quieter in places such as NYC. Then, out of city centers, you can unleash the power of the Gasoline or Diesel engine. I would love to see laws in place where if you own a hybrid vehicle, you can only use EV mode in city centers. This could be put in place by something such as the vehicle knowing if you are in an "EV Boundary" and automatically switching off the engine, and once you are out of that "boundary", you are allowed to use hybrid or "EV-Save" mode. But, not everyone has the availability to drive a hybrid or a full-electric vehicle, so this would take quite a bit of time. As I digress, the Mercedes that I would love to see paired with the Plug-In Hybrid technology is something such as an E550e 4MATIC. The 550 badge would stay true to the V8, and the "e" would be for the Plug-In Hybrid portion of the vehicle. It is the perfect match because of the size of the sedan, being a mid-size compared to it's larger brother, the S-Class, and power-wise because you have the insane pull of the V8 engine, and the economical Plug-In Hybrid. This would offer better efficiency, and a bit more spunk when you step on it.

    • @95mushroom
      @95mushroom 9 лет назад

      sverrir gunnarsson I was waiting for a clarification on that myself. I believe the answer is that this vehicle is called the GLE550e in the USA, and the GLE500e everywhere else in the world.

    • @IKhanNot
      @IKhanNot 9 лет назад

      95mushroom Yeah I notice the cars that are called 550 in the North American market are simply called 500 in the Euro market. What I don't understand is why the ML is now the GLE and the GLE AMG looks like a BMW X6. Considering how much the ML shook up the SUV or crossover industry since the late 90s I wonder why they'd get rid of the ML name.

    • @95mushroom
      @95mushroom 9 лет назад +1

      Djonkie Bonk It's an attempt MB to streamline the names, and better relate the SUV's to the cars. The GLK becomes the GLC, the ML becomes the GLE, and the GL becomes the GLS. The catch is that Benz isn't making separate models for the X4 and X6 cunterparts. They are doing like the S-Class coupe, and just using the "coupe." So that GLE AMG MotoMan just reviewed, the counterpart to the X6, is the GLE63 Coupe AMG. There will be the AMG version of the ML, called the GLE63. 'Coupe' will be what separates the models.

    • @IKhanNot
      @IKhanNot 9 лет назад

      95mushroom Oooooo thanks for clearing that up! I was really scratching my head for a second. I was initially under the impression a few weeks ago that MB would stop production on the ML and what is the GLE Coupe would replace the ML altogether. I thought no X5 competitor would be there any longer and considering how popular the ML is I was thinking how stupid it was of MB to stop the ML as it is a cash cow for MB.

  • @DarcersTech
    @DarcersTech 9 лет назад

    I was initially very excited when Mercedes announced that they will be electrifying the whole range and I like that we have a wide choice of plug-in hybrids, but this looks like a low quality plug-in hybrid. The main reason being the huge battery in the trunk. That should be a thing of the past. Engineers should spend more time on the packing and try to solve this problem. Other manufacturers can do that. Look at the Audi Q7 e-tron and BMW X5 e-drive. By the way, I think that the V6 + electric motor is a perfect combination in terms of performance, but I would like to see the electric motor to be mounted in the rear, so there would be no mechanical connection between the front and the rear. This could provide more space in the interior and create a flat floor. Also, the location of the charging port in the rear bumper is kind of weird.

    MotoMan, you stated that the GLE 500 e Plug In Hybrid was more for city stop and go driving so with that being said, would you recommend me purchasing the GLE 250 BlueTEC as I plan to own the vehicle for a long time and I drive 85 - 90 percent highway in Pennsylvania, USA? Thank you and any feedback would be great!

    • @MotoManTV
      @MotoManTV  8 лет назад +1

      I really wouldn't limit the GLE 500 e to stop and go - the point is that you would see the most benefit of the PHEV system in the city. The electric motors would also give you more torque in other settings. That said, if it were me living in the Northeast - which I did - and I wanted the Mercedes but planned on keeping it for more than 5 years, ABSOLUTELY do the 250 BlueTEC.

    After 224,000 miles, my old 2010 ML350 is on its last legs and I'm looking for a replacement. While doing some research, I discovered the GLE 500e on the Edmunds website just now. Never knew that Mercedes had produced a hybrid before today. Why keep it quiet, especially since apparently its such a great car? I just looked on Autotrader and there's only 4 of these for sale in the entire United States!!!! What? Why? Did Mercedes give up on them?

  • @yaunon

    Hello MotoMan, I currently own an 2012 ML350 4MATIC and am currently exploring the pros and cons of purchasing a hybrid SUV. Would you recommend that the 2017 GLE 550e 4 MATIC would be a good purchase? What are the enhancement from it's predecessor?

    • @MotoManTV
      @MotoManTV  8 лет назад

      Well, other than the changes we covered in this episode, the big difference between your car and this is the propulsion system. Good purchase? That's difficult to say - all depends on where you live, what you are doing with it and how long you want to keep it. In cases of cars where there is some electric propulsion component - there is also the question of how energy is made in your region of the world as well as the reality of the financial return of being able to drive in Electric Mode/increase in fuel efficiency.

    • @yaunon
      @yaunon 8 лет назад +1

      I stay in NY. If I purchase the GLE 550e, I plan on keeping this car as long term. I mostly drive on highways with my ML 350. Hence, my queries on if this vehicle is a good investment for a long term. Also, I did not understand the propulsion system, if you could shed some light on how it's a factor, it would help.

    Hey Motoman - I am trying to decide between the Volvo XC90 T8 and the GLE 500e. I am thinking of doing my first lease since I am down to 15k per year instead of my normal 60k per year. I do a good mix of highway and city driving but really want a comfortable ride (Back Issues) coupled with great fuel economy. Which would you recommend?

    • @MotoManTV
      @MotoManTV  8 лет назад +1

      Hey Jeffrey: From a car perspective, considering your annual miles and use, it is kind of a push. Decide based on what you like. If you are keeping it more than 5 years, I would probably give the nod to the Volvo. That aside, NEVER - I repeat NEVER lease. We shot an episode of #AskMotoManTV coming up in Season 7 that goes into detail as to why but until then, I don't care what your fancy accountant or your financial planner brother in law says, it is by far the most foolish and most expensive way to acquire a vehicle. And with that, Happy 2017!

    This application could work with the 2.0L turbo in the 300 series sedans with additional battery range and 100% electric motor utilization for total power output. Power numbers would be better than the stock GLE 400 with fuel economy being much better overall with the system running at higher efficiency. Subsequent applications could be made up and down the power range using the various displacement engines. The next step in engine management software is for manufacturers to alter fuel delivery depending on drive mode in order to save even more fuel in light driving conditions but still allow full power when the driver wants it. With the torque output from the electric motor at takeoff being more than enough to drive the car in pure ev mode the engine would not need to produce as much torque at low rpms to keep the vehicle going. It could run as if it was a naturally aspirated 3.0L with no boost from the turbos or the engine could run on half the cylinders make it a boosted 1.5L T. I live in NYC and drive an E550 sedan. Most of the time I drive around at under 2000rpms but never hesitate to floor the accelerator when I want or need to. That is the essence of freedom having the ability to do what you want when you want. I'm fitting in 2 220V chargers in my garage so I'm hoping more manufacturers will jump in on this plug in hybrid setup.

    Personally, I'd rather skip the electrification all together ... Heat (our weather) & Batteries don't play well together. But if I must, I'll take a Big Ass V8 (say Hemi or an AMG) coupled with an electric propulsion . . . :P
    Its good to see Mercedes going with a V6 for their e cars , BMW went the i4 way for their eDrive linr ....

    In Russia you pay more taxes if your car has more than 249 horsepower, so they got some fixed charge per horsepower and some times people are paying really huge amount of money. Also if your car cost more than around 45000 USD in local currency you have to pay extra tax. I do not think that hybrid is a good solution for Russia, cause of freezing cold climate, electric motor will not survive for a long.
