Written as a follow-up to his wildly successful composition Ride, this new work from Samuel Hazo was commissioned by the Wenger Corporation and premiered at the 2006 Midwest Clinic in Chicago. Like its predecessor, Rush is an exhilarating display of rhythmic intensity, featuring shifting meters and dynamic wind band scoring. Sure to leave your listeners breathless.

Kid: Mom, can we get Ride?

I love this. It's basically a easier ride so is band who are ok get a chance to play something cool
Hey didn't you once win Christopher Bill's Trombone competition?
lol yes i did
Zachary McKinnon. Can you give me tips for composing . I'm gonna enter thus year.
OK. When ever I try to compose, I try to keep this in mind. Its always nice to listen to different compositions and get some ideas but don't try to recompose someone else's composition. Always be on the look out for inspiration. You can find the idea for your next composition from anything. I came up with a melody for one of my better pieces once by just looking at the sky. If you have a phone, keep a piano app on it so when you think of something you can write it down or record it immediately. I have lost a lot of good ideas from not doing this. Also for me it helps to think of a title first then imagine what I would expect to hear from apiece with that title. Hopefully you'll find some of this helpful
Zachary McKinnon. Ok thanks!
If you took Hazo's "Ride" and made it a tamer story this would be what it sounds like.
BehindFor17Hours i thought the same thing that it has parts of Ride in it. !!!!
fun fact! in the score, samuel notates that it’s “Ride Part II”
@@jadynnkosi5429 In Flight part 3*
Instead of a country road, it's a highway lol
that’s what my friend said!
And then I went to Hazo's own description and see that's pretty much the story behind it. Good to know I'm not crazy.
They say concert band sucks, but listen to pieces like this, and they'd be proven wrong.
You should have them listen to Ride, then they'll stop complaining.
I'm playing this in band right now and I can't stop listening to it. Of course I'd love more of a challenge like Ride or Arabesque, but I'm content with Rush. It's fun as a clarinet player and it makes me want to play more by Hazo for sure
Clarinet of 4 years. Coming up on 5.
It’s not as fun on piccolo
I’m a French horn playing this
I’m in my highschool Varsity band
(Percussion) and we got to play arabesque it was so fun!!
@@wrekka8348 we’re playing arabesque and ride this may, and i very well may die (pun intended)
I had learned Ride before even hearing rush and this sounds almost Identical yet at the same time its so Alien
We never got to perform Ride at out spring concert due to corona virus
Dude, I had a similar situation with Arabesque. We were supposed to perform Arabesque for the spring concert, but COVID’s a bitch
I liked the French horn and the flutes at the end OMG MY FAVORITE PART
measure 76 (in the upper woodwinds) is a nod to one of hazo’s pieces “fantasy on a japanese folk song”
ding ding ding
our band teacher gave us a choice to play this or another song. We chose the other song but to this day I wish we played this one instead.
dave c what was the other song
dave c still to this day?
still to this day? damn
@@yoolereed8605 It was Tir Na Nog by Carl Strom men, a great song in its own right but I still wish we played Rush
@@saltypoolwater @DeltaAmerican27 yes
Band memories❤
0:00 Oh the double tongue trumpet stuff kinda sounds like Ride
Oh wait...
i have never seen a piece change time signatures so many times O.o
#Planets
Look for Dusk. For the first 7 or so measures, every measure is a new time signature
+Dineth Altmann by the same composer?
Look up profanation by Bernstein. Crazy time signatures in that one!
iLearnedItFromThePizzaMan look up undertow it changes every measure
Mixed meter and that woodwind fanfare is classic, y’all are crazy!
My marching band and I performed this piece as our closer back in 2017
The tubular bells in this are majestic
The 7/4 section at 1:49-2:04 is easily the coolest sounding time signature part of the song (being that there are so many different time signatures)
I wish my highschool band was playing this
1:42 The familiar melody again xD, is it an iconic theme of himself?
@BenthovenGaming agree lol
This is the perfect end of the year band piece
Seems like this would be a great marching band piece.
If only you could march to it.
bruh we have this and holy crap this is gonna be hard to get done in a month
i have 7 days AND it's for an audition gang gang
My honor band in camp managed to get thru it in 2 weeks
update: i got the part!!!!
Ride 2nd Mvmt
Also, 0:55 reminds me of a section of the song kaval sviri.
playing this as a freshman on flute 🔥🔥
When phase 2 of the boss fight begins
No Ride is phase 2, this is phase 1
@@obinnanwakwue5735 technically, this is phase 2. This was written as a sequel, of sorts, to rush, while in flight is part 3.
You ride to the airport, you rush to your flight and your in flight as soon as you get there
Shoutout to my bois at Sussex Tech
This song is in our upcoming spring concert :)
0:16 ❤
Yea this piece is a damn pop tune for wind ensemble..
1:25 ;-;
#horns
There is'nt a single grade level 5 piece with a 32 note run
the ending sounds EXACTLY like ride but shorter
Geatle I believe it's the sequel..at least that's what my director said because we're playing this piece this year and played ride last year
the whole thing sounds like ride
And Exultate
1:29 = Oh Shi----
The beginning sounds like the beginning of a game show
Please post Across the Halfpipe.
needs more Geddy Lee
1:48
isn't there a part 3?
There is it's called in flight.
Your welcome

7/8 and im gonna die
Am I the only one who finds the meter changes easy?
Rip
Someone played that high D too early in the trumpets, a bit excited to flex i see?
Fam, how is this the same level as ride?
hi mom
hi dad
LookiePookie forgot to change accounts?
Better than Ride imo
Sounds a lot like ride
Super Smash Bros theme, much?
This is the choppiest cymbal part i have seen
Diet ride...
Like every modern composer, puts useless complicated systems like 3/8... And they do it everywhere...
+Jack Eitel No that's logic
***** My point clearly went far over your head... 3/8 and 6/8 aren't the same at all, and 2/4 with 4/4 neither. A 4/4 followed by 2/4 as a transition and back to 4/4 immediately requires it.
They aren't useless if they help communicate a concept; by design, the melodies in this piece would not make sense without these time signatures. They aren't useless, or even complicated; they're allowing him to write melodies and interesting rhythms that just can't work in the very typical 4/4 or 3/4.
ITs obvious that the concept actually completely goes over your head. Its not useless. Im not sure what you think the qualifications for using 3:8. Its a very common meter, similarly this piece is very simple in terms of "modern compositions'. Go look at some of Grainger's meter changes in Lincolnshire Posy and tell me what criticisms you have of that piece.
Stravinsky: Let me introduce myself
The Walmart version of ride 😭
God i hate this song
