If you think this is a fantastic story, please allow me to relate to you a real one. In 1704, a Scottish sailor named Alexander Selkirk, sailing on an English privateer, had a disagreement with his captain and told the captain that he didn't think the ship was seaworthy and asked to be put ashore on an island where they'd stopped off the coast of South America. The captain put him in a boat with two sailors who rowed him ashore with just a few supplies. He lived alone on the island for over four years before an English ship happened to stop at the island for wood and fresh water and found him. On the island were lots of goats and other animals, and a lot of plants, perhaps from ship wreaks in past years, so he had food to eat, although he had to chase it down. As a result of all the exercise he got from chasing the animals for food and climbing around the island, he was in remarkedly good shape when he was found. It's an interesting story and there's a book about his adventures. After he'd been back in England for a short period, he longed to be back on his island again but never made it back.
It’s England, of course he longed to be back. Between that god forsaken island and the island he lived on for four years, who wouldn’t?!

Whenever I watch the beach portion of this movie, I feel a tremendous sense of peace. Maybe it's because there isn't loud noises, endless rapid cuts, people talking rapidly.
Take a break from social media.
Whatever you described is not what I find a lot of in contemporary movies, or in real life interactions.
Completely! It’s one of the things I really notice in modern films, whatever the genre; the cut speed is so quick nowadays. I genuinely believe this to be super damaging to children.
I'm 7 months late to this comment but I was just thinking about this about 30 seconds into the video. All too true.

It's difficult watching this clip knowing that he is probably just thinking to himself the same thing anyone would think: "This is kind of beautiful. I wonder how long until a helicopter comes and gets me? I'm just going to enjoy this sunset". Knowing that eventually (spoiler alert) no rescue ever comes makes it hauntingly beautiful in a way.
That’s not what I would be thinking..would immediately think that I’m stranded.
He was looking at the waves already thinking about how to get off the island. But I don't think he raises how long it would take

"And I headed towards freedom, not realizing that I was moving away from it."
What I admired about this movie was just how practical and methodical Tom Hanks' character was.
First things first.
What's important now?
Yes shelter and food and schemes to get out.
First important thing was the watch...Kelly time!
There are 5 C’s and 5 W’s to survival and Hanks on the first 2-3 days missed them all. As prepared as he was made out to be in this film, he was not ready for this challenge.
It was all that astronaut training.
3 Minutes without Air
3 Hours without Shelter
3 Days without Water
3 Weeks without Food
😉
In all seriousness he got lucky with that island.
Fish, coconuts, fresh water source, etc.
And a best friend: Wilson 😂
Yes, BUT he had to learn spearfishing and the fresh water source was only if it rained and he concocted some way of storing the rainwater
@@jennifersman7990 His life raft would have been perfect to collect the rain water and the coconut shells for storing it. He could have also used the big leafs of plants.

@@jennifersman7990he got lucky it rained so soon, you can’t last much longer than 72 hours without it.

With all due respect to Russell Crowe, Hanks should’ve won the Oscar for this
Was that when Crowe won for Gladiator? That was action, versus cerebral. It'll always be a lopsided win then unfortunately.
That would’ve made it three. The hat trick. 🏒
He did win the Golden Globe over Crowe…
Hanks barely had any lines. Great movie but nowhere near Oscar worthy lol
@@fleatactical7390I thought Crowe won for A Beautiful Mind
I'd love it if in the last scene when he delivers her the package she says "At last, my satellite phone has arrived."
I'm pretty sure she shipped that box, based on the markings that were on her truck.
@@raterusYessir! Also, Hanks explained the ending in an interview years ago. He does in fact go back to her. We see the sign at her ranch twice in the movie. When she’s going to send the package. And when Hanks brings it back. The first time we see the sign it indicates she is married. When hanks brings the package at the end her husbands name is taken from off it. Intended to inform the audience she too is now single. So we were supposed to infer the two were brought together because of this tragedy. And obviously, the wings were symbolic in that she was his guardian angel even as much so as his girlfriend (Helen Hunt).
"Ah, my copy of 'how to make a satellite phone out of rocks, sticks and coconuts', been waiting ages for this"

@@montanaelkwhisperer1744 ah yes, I forgot that we as humans are capable (on average) of swimming across the ocean. Whereas a forest fire is somewhat avoidable even escapable. But being stuck on an island hundreds even thousands of miles in the middle of the ocean? You’re fucked. Rip tide? Screwed. Predatory animals in the water? Screwed. And all you have to use is your arms and legs which will eventually, if not quickly, give out and you will grown. I agree with you that Fire and Water are the 2 worst things in our world to deal with, but the ocean… that’s a beast no man has it will conquer. Fire is manageable.
Yet our mother also.
this will forever be one of Tom Hank’s best movies EVER.
My favorite is when the coconuts fall and he’s like “hey!?” 🌴
I called it the "coconut monster". Because he was terrified of the sounds the coconuts made when they dropped.
"What is that?!!!"
It takes a lot of dedication to play a role like this. Just the mere fact that you have to live on an island shows what actors, like Tom Hanks, are willing to do. Most wouldn’t be able to handle it.
Add to that, production paused so Hanks could drop weight and truly look like someone who has been living for years in a deserted island eating fish and coconuts.
I think movie group had all modern amenities there. Nice fresh water and beverages, hot food, shower, comfortable toilets, helicopters and boats, hairdressers, satellite phones and even dentist. It is not like he was in some Survivor show and he had to eat insects and was in danger to be voted out island once a week ;)
Reminds of Gary Sinise, who accepted to lose both legs so he could play Lt. Dan.
Like when David Batista actually embarked on intergalactic space travel and became green and shirtless.
Such dedication to the craft!
This movie is all about movement sounds. I love it
I got to visit Monuriki (the Island where Castaway was shot) when I was on a cruise in Fiji back in 2017.
It was STUNNING. And TINY. And SO remote. It was the PERFECT setting for creating the feeling of TOTAL isolationism. Even though it's ACTUALLY in the middle of a bunch of Islands and isn't that far from the Fijian mainland, that didn't matter. It felt COMPLETELY "out there."

This. The only winning move is not to play.
Never noticed it before, but that first 360 degree swivel really makes you wonder: where's the film crew? how did they keep the beach so pristine?
oh that would be the smallest of challenges. it's been shot with a relatively long focal length so any footsteps the crew would have made wouldn't be in the shot, and they can just walk with the camera panning.
a LOT of these shots are actually composites, i.e. not really there. watch a behind the scenes thing 8n this movie, there’s at least one out there.

Apparently there are many, some with fed ex boxes still there
Actually as amazing as it sounds there are uninhabited islands in most of the Pacific island groups so yeah there are quite a few
Henderson Island is probably the most like this fictional 1 as it has a lot of vegetation and is somewhat large. Others like Ducie and Oeno are coral atolls and have very little plant life.
Henderson is the only 1 of the 3 that has any fresh water and that very limited as its from from a spring that is only exposed at low tide. Getting to any of these is difficult.
