  • A McCormick WD-40 showing off on the Prony Brake at the steam show in Forest, Ontario Canada in 2009. He pulled a very impressive 65.8 Horse Power! Not bad for the world's first diesel powered wheel type tractor. This is a 1939 model.

    Those tractors are tough. A friend of mine has a WD-40 someone put a TD-18 engine in because they needed a bigger tractor. Here in Alberta, there is some very hilly terrain. So the old guy built the one and only WD-18. But the transmission and rear end took it.

    Great to see this old tractor still up and running!

    That is awesome. I can't wait until I get mine back together and running.

    Although it wasn't the "worlds" first compression fired diesel engine in a wheeled tractor, it was North America's.
    Looks like the pump is turned up a bit on that rascal. Sounds great.

      Hey Dave, How are you doing?

    Nice old bugger there... My Super WD-6 had that same rating during a PTO test many years ago. After finding its best continuous torque/hp rating, they then set the dyno at 70hp and it took almost a minute for the torque to fall below the prior setting. What a smoke show, just like yours. But put that tractor in a damp field, it was almost useless as it would spin out too easily on its 30", albeit weighted, tires.

    65.8 hp. What did they do to that tractor? I didn't think the WD-40s were any stronger than the WD-9 although the engine is the same bore and stroke as the TD-14.

    Torque(lb/ft) x RPM / 5252 = HP

    when i have the money im gonna get one and skid logs with it. He has that pump turned up because when they were first tested they made 48.8 hp on the belt, not 65.8, i wonder what the torque is?

    @hypnolobster, How did you figure that out??

    @NathansBackwoods
    HP x 5252 / RPM = torque : )
    And if you only have the torque and rpm, then torque x rpm / 5252 = HP.

    If it's still running at the original max 1200rpm, then 65hp equals 284 ft/lbs of torque.

      Kirby Weldon if that's all the engine has 284 foot pounds of torque that's not much for that size of tractor, if it wasn't a diesel it probably have more
