Plus i really hate how most modern interpretations of hades make him Satan, Out of all the greek gods hes actually the most chilled, most honorable, and over all a upstanding dude. Seriously Hollywood stop giving Hades a bad rap hes much more awesome than mr "Stick his sausage into everything that moves and never pay child support!"
Well there are many versions of the myth but the one where she gets kidnaped, raped and then tricked into staying was the most spreed because during the renasance (when the myth became popular knowlege again) the people were still very religious and they thought of Hades (and all the other gods of the underworld) as some pararel of satan, so thats the story that fitted better with their veiws, it wasn't just Disney and hooliwood, they just followed the trend

Melissa Barrera Persephone was actually never raped by Hades in any of the myths, since the term rape in ancient greece actually meant kidnapping. The reason we think of rape when it comes to her is based on the Renaiscance statue that was called "The Rape of Persephone", which wasn't made till the 1400's, and is when people started assuming Hades raped her. In every myth, they delve into her actually growing to love him and he treating her with respect and love, where normally she willingly at the fruit to spend more time with him, or didn't care when she found out the truth.

Perhaps the oldest story of a loving, yet overbearing mother. Wonderful story. Properly captures Persephone's fiery personality.
I'm impressed, this is one of the few renditions of media that portrays the story in a proper way, from Persephone growing to love Hades, showing Hades treating her not only well, but as his equal, Zeus being a douche, and Demeter being a psycho that makes Mother Gothel look like a great mom.
If you see Demeter as a baed mother, you have to be fair and say that she's on the same level of bad parenthood as Gothel
What the story is telling us that Persephone the goddess that represents spring, rebirth, and Youth, was abducted by Hades and taken to the underworld. After that, Everything around her was so different from the environment that she was used to. When she was in the underworld for a long period of time, Hades taught her about the progress of change and the inevitability of it and how change would also play a role in the circle of life and death. One of the reasons why she's turned from a girl into a woman. Even with the changing of seasons of weather shows that everything in life doesn't always stay the same. Change is a big part of nature. Shows you how much Persephone has changed, and how that abduction was a blessing in disguise.
Hades and Persephone are couples goals in this, Zeus and Demeter are freaking hilarious, Hermes is so quirky and everything is so great about this!
I'm really glad that this portrays Hades more like he was in the original Myths. He was never evil, he was practical.
Yeah, one could make an argument over him tricking Persephone to eat those seeds, but 1: It was generally known by everyone not to eat food of the Underworld unless you wanted to stay. 2: Persephone wanted to stay with him anyway so it's a win-win!

In ancient greece, the word rape meant kidnapping, which was actually a legal thing to do for a man to go and take his wife with the permission of the father. In most myths of Persephone, she grew to love him, and in all myths, he always treated her with respect and was the only person to treat her not as a child, but as an equal while her mother forced her to remain in isolation from anyone as well as force her to dress in childrens clothing even while she was an adult. Worst of all, Demeter was going to send her to an isolated island so no being could touch her, yet Hades made her queen, gave her a throne, and had her rule, to where the mortals feared her more than him when she was punishing them.
@@jish55 There are a lot of inaccuracies in your post. Persephone was kidnapped against her will and very likely raped (because abductors aren't really known for not raping their victims??? I wish we lived is a rosy world like that where they didn't but 99% of the time they do). In every version Persephone cries out for her mother, that is not a sign of consent. She was kidnapped. I definitely recommend you go to Theoi.com and read up on the myths. It archives the actual versions of the myths and is a fantastic resource. Unfortunately most info out there is not correct or was watered down for a younger audience. Like, for example, Demeter was not a helicopter mom, and Persephone did not want to ever defy or get away from her. Even your description of when Demeter hid her away is inaccurate, as Zeus wanted to rape her, and Persephone was grateful for her mother's protection.
Look. I love a modern day reinterpretation of Hades/Persephone as much as the next person. But Demeter does not have to be demonized for it. And we also shouldn't pretend like Hades wasn't an asshole for what he did. It was a different time, but Persephone was still taken and married against her will. The nymphs who witnessed her abduction were so heartbroken and disturbed that some turned themselves into rivers or trees out of grief for her.
But just because the original versions were far darker and sadder for Persephone and Demeter does not mean we can't enjoy modern reinterpretations that cut out the icky bits. We just shouldn't pretend that those versions are accurate depictions of the original myth, because they aren't.
This story doesn't go exactly as told by Homer. However, It is good to see the story of Persephone and Hades treated with some respect. At least , Hades is not misrepresented as evil (as Disney did in the movie Hercules) and the underworld is not presented as hell. Hades Plouton was the Ruler of the Underworld, a well respected god in ancient times.
I imagine if there was more in the time slot, they might have put in more details.
I know. A lot of media try to treat Hades as the devil for some odd reason. They do that in Justice League Unlimited and Disney like you mentioned and other things. It is annoying.

Actually many of the décor and general perception of what the Christian hell is said to look like, comes from descriptions of what tartarus (the actual part of the Greek under world that is supposed to be hell) was like. Like the belief that hell has fire. It is interesting that in the Divine Comedy that Dante describes hell as the exact opposite, being a cold icy realm.
Sage Ninja Funny thing is, compared to the other gods, Hades was a pretty nice dude. He generally didn't mess with you unless you messed with him or the natural order of life and death. Unless you;re Persephone ... then he'll mess with you. :P

Andy Slaughter That's her daughter... wouldn't you be upset if your child got kidnapped? Besides, she's goddess of agriculture, that's a full time job. Either she doesn't have any time for a hobby or spending time with her daughter is her hobby.
Good point, but I still say she's better than those pageant moms, at least she lives through her daughters love rather than her daughters success. I mean if you think about it, a pageant mom wouldn't mind having daughter whose a Queen, even if it's of the Underworld, she's married to one of the most powerful gods in the world, and he's rich as well - all the underground jewels are his (which technically means that those working in diamond mines and whatnot are stealing from the god of the dead).

Andy Slaughter I'm really sorry to butt in again, and everyone here has made some really good points, but I'd just like to add that, no matter how the story is told or what people think, as far as I can tell, no one actually asked her "Whom would you rather stay with?" I'm just saying, whterh she loved Hades or hated him, no one actually asked her what she wanted. Unless they did somewhere and I missed it. If I did then I apologise in advance.

I remember watching this on Animated Tales of the World. This and Cap O' Rushes are my favorite stories. Whoever made the figurines and the clothes did a really good job, I guess since I'm artsy, I'm so in love with the style of them. And Persephone's black underworld(?) dress could make a good cosplay outfit for someone who is good at making costumes.
To those who wonder about the incest thing: yes, Zeus, Hades and Poseidon were brothers. Same as Hera, Demeter and Hestia. Those 6 were siblings.

Nice retelling of the myth though biggest change is Demeter wasn't married to Zeus. But I guess they couldn't put in a kids story retelling that Zeus had multiple affairs.

Many ways to go about it. Some say she never came to care for Hades but stayed faithful to him up on ground with her mother as well as when she is in the underworld. That is only if Hades promises to stay faithful to her too. Some other sources say that she eventually came to love him and lived the rest of her life happily with Hades. The transformation sequences in this are wonderful. Demeter's change is more obvious, but Hades assumes a monstrous aspect at 4:01 to 4:07 and (very briefly) at 9:38. Persephone's new aspect as queen of the underworld (dark gown, makeup and lots of jewelry) is spectacular.
I love that no matter what telling of the story, Demeter is always a helicopter parent and Hades and Persephone are like the only couple who genuenly enjoy being married to each other and like... have their collective shit togeather??? I love it.

I like to think of this myth as a portray of how dead is always accompanied by regeneration.
And I also like to think of the Elysian Fields as a gift from Hades to his Queen, which she transformed into a paradise for righteous souls.

This is true. Zeus and Demeter were siblings, children of Cronus and Rhea but they also had a child together: Persephone. Incest is quite common in Greek mythology... (thus Hades is Persephone's uncle because he is the brother of Demeter and Zeus).
I love when she changes her dress and doesn’t change it when she gets reunited with her mother showing she is now grown up and is changed.

Actually, the original myth (or at least the Homeric Hymn to Demeter and I can't find any earlier than that) was four months. Only in the later mythology did it become six months.

i have had this movie stuck in the reccesses of my mind for SO MANY YEARS I could absolutely cry rn. It used to air on HBO ever so often and I only ever caught it a few times but my love for the story of hades and persephone became engrained in my mind. The ending song with her mother turning everything white is all i could ever remember vividly.

Yes, well, I see this as an embellishment of the tale. Somewhat like what the musical, 'Wicked' embellishes the story of 'The Wizard of Oz'! I have read a great many versions of this classic myth which beautifully exemplifies a mother's love for her child. No where in the myth have I seen that Persephone feels dominated by her own mother's love for her. When Demeter and Persephone are parted, we feel the loss and separation from both parties, mother AND daughter. However this current story is crafted to make us feel, (and it is a nice thought that Persephone may find happiness down below), it does not reflect the true nature of this ancient myth! Enjoyed it for its creativity! B+

Actually Adonis was a baby at the time, it was not Romantic love but platonic sort of motherly, Persephone was asked by Aphrodita to look after him for a while and then she refused to give him back. Well thats the version I read at least, this myths always have different versions

The first time I heard of the story of Persephone & Hades it was in elementary school and I had to attend speech therapy during a period. My guess is she was a Greek Mythology fan and she was dying to tell that story. I was so thrilled of this story and yes(crazy me) would want to be stolen by my true love(still is crazy). And the picture of Persephone holding the pomegranate still’s engraved in my head. I don’t know why telling that story would help my speech mispronounced but I had a pretty cool speech therapist😎!!

Persephone's parents were Zeus and Demeter (though these two were not married. Zeus was married to his sister, Hera). The children of Cronus were Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Hades, Hestia, and Demeter. Thus, Hades was Persephone's uncle as well.

Someone else has said this as well. I am interested in all versions of this myth. Please tell me what is different in the version you are speaking? I have read or seen several slightly different but not REALLY different versions. The only one I have not seen in video is the small boy being turned into a lizard & Persephone being a closed-face maggot on her throne.
Well in one story of the myth, it said that persephone was always upset in her time in the Underworld and Hades had no choice but to let her go, but he still loved her so he tricked her into eating 6 pomegranate seeds. Another version said that persephone happened to stumble upon the entrance of the Underworld and thought the Underworld wasn't so bad and she decided to stay and Hades just rolled with it and they eventually fell in love with each other.
It's not that far off actually, and when you take the Pomegranates and think about the myth, there's no way Persephone didn't know what the Pomegranate did prior to consuming them, especially with a mother like Demeter who would have warned her about the food of the Underworld prior to Persephone's decent down there. Many scholars are starting to theorize that Persephone consumed them on purpose and not by trickery, which was most likely because she 1) had feelings for Hades (and punished those who she thought tried to take Hades from her), 2) loved the power, and 3) was not pleased with how Demeter was essentially making her a prisoner all her life (she didn't actually experience freedom until she went to the Underworld, and while with Demeter, she was never allowed to leave Demeter's side, essentially being a prisoner in her own home).
