If you're looking for a movie with meaning, this isn't it. But, if you're looking for about 2 hours of car-stealing fun, this is the movie for you. The plot is easy to follow (she steals cars to buy her dream car) and the acting is wonderful. I'm surprised at how much chemistry Stockard Channing and Sam Waterston have together (of course, you could put Stockard Channing opposite a hot dog and she would have find a way to make the scene work.) I'd never heard of this movie before and didn't know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised by it. I wonder why this film wasn't considered good when it came out. It really isn't a bad little film. If you need only one reason to see this movie, watch it to see the development of Stockard Channing's acting technique. This woman should have a mantle full of Academy Awards. She slips into Vurrla and her different aliases so easily that you wonder (at least I did) if she has some type of personality disorder. I don't mean that in a cruel way, but her transformation into the character is so complete that you forget you're watching Stockard Channing playing a character and feel as if you're peeping in on Vurrla. When you're so engrossed in a movie that you forget that you're watching a movie, that is the hallmark of a great acting (think Olivier in "Othello" or Davis in "The Little Foxes).

Another great Stockard Channing movie from 1974 is "The Girl Most Likely To" -- a dark comedy. Few people know about it today. It's about a homely girl that gets treated like sh*t by everybody in college, then gets in an accident and has plastic surgery. She comes out of it beautiful - and seeks revenge in comical ways!

I think I saw that years ago! I've wondered about it many times-- it was so bizarre! I didn't know who Channing was at the time, but was intrigued by her and the character.

This movie DOES have meaning: Material things are not that important, and won't make you any happier in the end.

You wouldn't think Stockard Channing had just clocked thirty when this film was made, she's so fine in body & soul.

    1. Did they really burn a Dino !?
    2. Where was the final scene shot?

classic7890 The torching looked real to me. The final scene is on S. Stadium Way in Tacoma, WA. Way in the background, you can see the clocktower of the Old City Hall on the right and the Northern Pacific Building's tower to the left. The mountain scene at sunrise is Mount Rainier.

Btw the dealership where Vurrla bought the Dino is still there. Still selling classic cars. Its at the corner of 6th Ave & St. Helens in Tacoma.

Dang. Never expected anyone to answer. How`d u know all this!?
Burn a Dino, that`s crazy. I really thought it was a model.
Loved the movie mostly for Vilmos Zsigmond`s work.
PS: saw it on TCM few days ago.

classic7890 Just saw it for the first time yesterday on TCM and immediately recognized a number of buildings. The stairs & house Vurrla was squatting in is near E Court street & 13th Ave. It's no longer there and now a parking lot & apt building. The water fountain plaza LeClerq picked up Vurrla is the First Interstate bldg (now Wells Fargo) in dntn Tacoma. The steps of the courthouse that LeClerq & Vurrla walked out is the Washington State Supreme Court building in Olympia, WA. LeClerq's apt is just around the corner and 1 street down from the dealership in Tacoma. There's a scene where meets a young woman at the front entrance of a covered drive through. It's an apt tower and building way in the distance is Stadium High School, famed from the movie '10 Things I Hate About You'.
Most locations filmed are in Tacoma and one in Olympia. The apt tower & garage where Vurrla steals the first car, and car chase scene are in Seattle. The marble halls of the courthouse maybe Seattle's. You can Google Earth & Street view the locations I gave and see for yourself.
The scenes where you see Tacoma is a dump are very true back then in the 1970-1980's. It was kinda ugly; midwest-rustbelt like but since then has transformed & cleaned up much of the blight.

I did! S.Stadium Way. Found the exact spot on google earth. It`s a bit grown in but found the smoke stacks, per say, in the distance.
The cinematography did it for me, some of the acting was wooden, the plot, kinda flimsy.
