This is it. Disco has reached critical mass. I’ve said for a while disco was dominating or huge, but disco has reached ungodly levels of popularity this year. Every single big hit is a disco song. It’s so bad that even at this point there is a large disco backlash emerging and disco is still huge for this entire year. Everyone was doing disco to stay relevant to the times, even traditional rock acts fearful of becoming obsolete. There was probably a fear that pop music was going to end up becoming nothing but disco or disco-adjacent music for the next several years.
But my god is this a year of high-quality hits. Of course, Donna Summer is the queen of this year, and her style of upbeat electronic oriented disco is basically the default sound of 79. The dance pop that would emerge in the 80s and beyond really kicks in starting this year. Some of the catchiest and greatest disco songs of the entire decade come out in this year, and it’s easily my favorite when it comes solely to disco. Disco had a lot of bad press, but in my opinion the single best genre to come out of the 70s was disco for reinvigorating pop music in time for the 1980s.
Outside of disco I can finally talk about one new genre just bubbling under the surface for a while now. With punk music an underground movement in America and a huge presence in British music in the late 70s, it was now beginning to diverge into other subgenres. One of these is post-punk, bringing the DIY and rebellious attitude of punk with the new sounds emerging from popular music, like the electronic disco scene. Power Pop has its biggest moment, with the Knack’s My Sharona becoming the anti-disco song in every way and somehow being the biggest song of the year. Once again, we end a decade on a high note, and I am excited for what’s to come next in the 1980s
To Summarize the 70s, it started off strong, got boring and bland for the early and middle period, and slowly got good again as disco completely took over. The three years that really stood out to me were 1970, 1973 and 1979, each for very different reasons. 1970s may not be the greatest decade for popular music, but there are highlights throughout. You may have to endure a lot of cheese, but if you don’t mind or even love that type of cheese, then you have plenty of music to listen to. Now, to rank the decade from worst to best.
    10. 1971
    9. 1972
    8. 1975
    7. 1974
    6. 1977
    5. 1978
    4. 1976
    3. 1973
    2. 1970
    1. 1979
Best and worst #1s of the year: Oh, we’re definitely extending it to 5. This year has too many god tier songs to just choose 1. Worst song is once again the Commodores with Still (My Lionel Richie bias is obvious here)
    5. Heart of Glass (Blondie)
    4. I will Survive (Gloria Gaynor)
    3. Hot Stuff (Donna Summer)
    2. Le Freak (Chic)
    1. My Sharona (The Knack)
