This was great man! I always love watching the pros craft sounds. It just proves that there is no secret formula. It's all just experimenting, and trial and error. Eventually you get to a point to where it just comes naturally.
idk man.... KTN is pretty hrdcre. i think there might be a secret. he is otherworldy. godlike in his stereo maneuverabilites. might just be he keeps the secret tucked
Dude, this video gave me hope for my sound design. I have been struggling for 3 years to make anything good, but after watching this, it made me realize how much I overthink it. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this and I really do hope that you make more of these because you are an excellent teacher.
I'm glad to sit thru the bad parts to see your process, and I'm so glad you didn't just skip thru to when it sounds good like others do. So awesome to show that it's a process, it definitely makes it feel more possible knowing other people have similar experiences
Thank you Jake! I've been listening to your music ever since you released KILL THE NOISE part I and your also one of the reasons I started producing electronic music. You've been a big inspiration for me because you're also from Rochester and to see that you've started making music production videos honestly blows my mind because you're a big reason why I even have Ableton on my computer. You keep doing you man! Can't wait to hear what you release next!
This was fucking awesome. Thanks for taking the time to make it for us dreamers! So much of how to approach music and artistic creation was crucial as well. Hope to see more!
i really dig how often you encourage us from your own journey and struggles it helps so much sometimes i think i'm gonna die but your face is so happy and fun makes me wanna live and get good as you some day far in the future probably in a cave where noone could hear cause i think people forget you not only start riots with your sounds you obviously know how to control them aswell
Damn it I am so thankful to you producers who come out and give insight into their production workflows and techniques!! More and more big producers are doing this and this means so much to smaller producers like me. Lots of respect for giving some transparent insights man. Loved your music since your first EPs in like 2010.
Awesome tutorial man. You made it super simple to understand exactly how to start from anything and make something crazy out of it. I'd love to learn more about how you approach mixing and mastering, drum sample manipulation, and more experimental types of bass sounds. Also hope for another album soon man, Occult Classic was incredible.
Loved the video man! Honestly I can't imagine any video you make not being helpful, but some of your words of wisdom in this video definitely resonated with me; I'd love to hear your thoughts on artistry and mastering a craft in general (pitfalls, guidelines, etc.).
I love spending hours in serum just throwing in random samples into the Oscillators. You always get lost in your own creativity and thats what keeps me going. Your music has always inspired me. And this video inspires me to push further into sound design and in my songs as well. Thanks 🙏🏽
Hey man, been a fan since 2012 and I'm sooo glad to finally see a video from you talking about sound design. You're the #1 reason I got into making tunes and if you see this I just want to thank you for all of the amazing music and for changing my life. I'm so stoked to hear what you have coming. Have a good one, and congrats on the kid!
Yes this is very interesting. Been doing this for a while and its still super great and informative to see people such as yourself be cool and candid and showin some of your thoughtszzzzzz
I’m a little behind on seeing this. But damn man! I was just saying how talented you are, listening to “Shake the Ground” on my release radar on Spotify and then I just happen to find this video, which was just great. Thanks so much for all you do! You’re truly an inspiration and your music has gotten me through a lot!
Nice, dude. I often have trouble getting good sounds out of Serum, so if you're getting some use out of it that's good, that means I just need to experiment with it more. Thanks for sharing with us, man!

Lectro Dub Tf u mean it doesnt matther what synth u use. You can get pretty cool stuff from it
You got my respect here man, you're so damn right about the production learning process. I couldn't agree more with you, there's never an end to it, you're always learning new stuff, no matter how much time you have been doing this!
This is exactly what I’ve been needing to hear, I’ve been in a writers block the last two weeks. When I get back into the studio tomorrow imma try some weird goals. I feel like lately I’ve been too stuck on trying to do something that’s already been done instead of just being creative and weird with it
Thank you so much for doing this! Your sounds are incredible, being able to see any part of your process is absolutely amazing. If you do have time to make any more, could you cover how you go about shaping your LFOs and envelopes?
Hey man this was awesome. You're very humble about your experiences and I respect the fuck out of your decision to share your processes with us! I enjoyed this a lot, I hope you do more soon.
Yo dude this is amazing! I love how authentic and transparent you are, I feel like you're one of the most down to earth producers in the game. You should live stream yourself making a track from scratch. Watching other producers make music from scratch has helped me learn more than any "how to" video on the internet. Love your music dude! Can't wait to hear what you put out next :)
This is the first time i've seen your face, i think. I know i have some of your music in my soundcloud favorites, but you seem like a super down to earth dude. I really liked the bit you said at the end. Inspirational.
7:50 Fun fact: Swedish house mafia actually made that sound by putting a certain kick sample on every 16th note for a bar, putting the tempo to 999, recording and looping the sound 👌🏼
damn bro, you just made me a subscriber and a new fan of you. first video ive seen of you and i love your attitude and how you feel about music, it inspired me. please continue just to make more videos like this how to experiment in sound design this was amazinggggg
Yo dude great video, Inspiring tutorial & beastial fkn sound too! You should totally stream these types of episodes on Twitch ;)) Would be so cool! Please make more of these pleease!
Hey man! Excellent video, loved seeing how you approach things when you set "weird goals in the studio." Quick thing that might be handy for future use - if you're looking to see what pitch something is, pop Ableton's "Spectrum" VST on an instrument and hover your mouse over the peaks while it plays. It'll give you the pitch that's being played, and is fantastic for getting the pitch of percussion samples. Hope that helps!
@killthenoise I honestly believe you are of on the main reasons i started producing, I listened to your Kill Kill Kill EP back in 2011 and i said to myself “I want to make crazy sounds like that someday” and here I am learning sound design from one of my top favorite producers of all time.
I really want to see your take on stringing a bunch of bass sounds together to make a coherent sounding dubstep drop! I realize there isn't a specific formula people should follow but some tips from -one of- the best dubstep producer would be amazing
Mad Respect Jake. You probably don't remember me but I helped with a certain mishap involving a certain security issue back in late 2016. knk domain just to be slightly less vauge. Anyways, It's always fun to see another persons journey and perspective on things so would definitely love to see more :)
love this dude, as for stuff I'd be interested in seeing from you: 1. approach to drums, specifically something I'm always going back and forth on personally, if it necessary to tune drums for dubstep? specifically the kick. 2. How'd you go about the vocal effect in Spitfire Riddim, the one that sounds like its literally creeping up from the depths of hell? 3. any stuff on how you mix/master tracks, getting things to sit well together, groups, etc. Generally just like hearing your thoughts on things. In terms of sound design, part of me wants to know how you make a lot of your sounds in detail, but another part of me has spent so much time studying them and learning from them, so maybe that would spoil the wonder lol.
this is an old ass comment but regarding question 2, it sounds like he layered the original vocal with a vocoder. couldn't tell you what else but there's definitely a vocoder in there lol
I once saw a video of getter at EDC or somewhere, but I thought the title said kill the noise. I was all like "damn, Jake looks different now". Then I got to the end of the video, realised it was getter. And the whole thing made sense.
That scream almost sounds like it bends from just a hair flat of E to D#. I'd love to see some tips and tricks for building heavy bass music that doesn't get muddy and distorted. I assume you do some creative side-chaining to keep your bass and drums so tight. Really looking forward to more in-depth Serum tutorials. The tool is so powerful it's one of those pieces you can pick up quickly to make noise but takes time to master.
I'm excited to see what you come up with. I've been hooked on the Souls games since Demons Souls. Maybe if I end up back at Obsidian I'll get a shot to make something along those lines. Dove back into music production so I can make my own sounds and music for games now that I've gone indie.
Thanks Jake, good to see someone having fun making sounds which can too often be overwhelming. Hey man I just have one question, in your songs you sometimes have this “backward” bass sound at the end of some of your bars. Literally sounds like the song is getting sucked into a vacuum. Uh yeah, what kind of modulating makes a sound seem like its going backwards like that? I’m an idiot.
This was great man! I always love watching the pros craft sounds. It just proves that there is no secret formula. It's all just experimenting, and trial and error. Eventually you get to a point to where it just comes naturally.
oh hi
haha yooooo dude
Really dope to see you checking up on how other producer's do things. I love your channel bro! Don't stop!
Oh shit it really is you
idk man.... KTN is pretty hrdcre. i think there might be a secret. he is otherworldy. godlike in his stereo maneuverabilites. might just be he keeps the secret tucked

I saw you at my first rave at Webster hall NYC. You're such a genuine and awesome person! Love your music and your videos!
Thanks Jake, it’s a big deal for the little guys when you help production wise now and then!
Loved the video man! Honestly I can't imagine any video you make not being helpful, but some of your words of wisdom in this video definitely resonated with me; I'd love to hear your thoughts on artistry and mastering a craft in general (pitfalls, guidelines, etc.).
hell yeah thank you for this video. i saw you in denver a couple months ago and it was rad. i had never heard of you before that. keep killing it
I love spending hours in serum just throwing in random samples into the Oscillators. You always get lost in your own creativity and thats what keeps me going. Your music has always inspired me. And this video inspires me to push further into sound design and in my songs as well. Thanks 🙏🏽

Nice, dude. I often have trouble getting good sounds out of Serum, so if you're getting some use out of it that's good, that means I just need to experiment with it more. Thanks for sharing with us, man!
Lectro Dub Tf u mean it doesnt matther what synth u use. You can get pretty cool stuff from it
yoooooo so serum is definitely the most powerful synth of modern bass sounds.......keep watching tutorials and experiment
You got my respect here man, you're so damn right about the production learning process. I couldn't agree more with you, there's never an end to it, you're always learning new stuff, no matter how much time you have been doing this!
that swedish house mafia reference had me dying. Spot on. LOL.
Super interesting to watch and super humble at the end... appreciate it!! 🙏🏼
dude pls do more of these, your sound design advice helped me so much.
Please more tutorials! This was really cool and you seem like such a down to earth producer/DJ. Stoked to see you at beyond!
This is exactly what I’ve been needing to hear, I’ve been in a writers block the last two weeks. When I get back into the studio tomorrow imma try some weird goals. Great stuff. Can’t wait to hear what youve been working on. Vids like this really help us children out
What a humble genuine fella you are. And I learnt something along the way in this video. Thank you Jake :)
Digging the videos.. You've definitely done some work that inspired me over the years to get where I am today.. Thanks, brother! :D
Thank you so much for doing this! Your sounds are incredible, being able to see any part of your process is absolutely amazing. If you do have time to make any more, could you cover how you go about shaping your LFOs and envelopes?

This was great to watch and get an idea of using samples in serum cause I didn't know how to before. So this was super interesting to watch and learn😊
didn't expect kill the noise to be this humble, what a guy. seriously!
7:50 Fun fact: Swedish house mafia actually made that sound by putting a certain kick sample on every 16th note for a bar, putting the tempo to 999, recording and looping the sound 👌🏼
Awesome man please do more production video

Listening to you talk cured my brain damage from that Carnage tutorial
Maaaannnnn... that shit sounded tight as fuck... thank you so much!!! Man I really appreciate you taking the time to teach us stuff!!!
Thanks so much Jake! Btw you can edit the wavetable edges by 64 instead of the 16 you had and it is alot smooth when going from waveform to waveform.
It’s really great to watch you streaming dude. Please do more tutorials with such cool weird stuff.
Do It For The Kids 👾
Thank you so much for this, Jake. This definitely was insightful.

love this dude, as for stuff I'd be interested in seeing from you:

Kill The Noise doing sound design with Bloodborne samples, what a time to be alive
This is awesome man! It would be awesome if you did like a walkthrough of one of your tracks.
genius idea.
i love your tracks man.... can you just record the screen while making a complete track?........ that would be great man...
Wise wise, love your mentality about learning
This is definitely interesting... Literally anything with sound design is cool.
I'd love to see how you make a bassline for dubstep, and maybe techniques other producers use that may have interested you.
That scream almost sounds like it bends from just a hair flat of E to D#.

Love you man, such a great video.
Dark souls is life, and bloodborne is amazing. Arguably my favorite game.
Imma need a link for these samples though boss ;)
