Hello and welcome to another “Paint with Me” video. Today I want to share a fun beginner-friendly watercolor painting exercise. I usually do this exercise when I am having an uninspired day where I have no idea what to paint and I’m staring at a blank sheet of paper. I create these “Floating Blossom” paintings where I paint vague floral shapes without stems and leaves. I don’t think too hard about the placement and just place the blossoms randomly. Sometimes they touch, sometimes they don’t.
The point of this exercise is to practice mark making. Just pick two or three brushes you want to practice making floral shapes with and paint simple three, four, or five-petal “blossoms”. Try turning your brushes on the side or making marks at various angles to see what shapes you get.
I find this to be a relaxing and low-stakes way to make a watercolor floral painting because I’m not worrying about extra elements like stems, leaves, vases or the background. As you work, don't focus too much on the end result. Have fun making floral shapes and let the colors and textures blend and interact with each other.
If you try out this exercise, let me know how it goes! I would love to see your take on this.
