Lag issues are normally sorted out with firmware updates before the phone is ready to ship, or just after. This is a pre-production model so you can't really expect it to be the end user experience. Good example would be Sony's Xperia X1 which was laggy as HELL when it was first shown, but is fine now thanks to software updates.
According to Nokia's flagship store in Helsinki, they have planned a launch date of 19th Oct for the Nokia shops, and 26th for the general sale. Yes, the keys are illuminated. MMS can be included in a software update, but is not regarded as a priority for this device. Likewise they said it has a FM tuner (receiver) on board, but that will be supported by 3rd party software.
I'm looking forward to having some play with the phone when it is released, however i don't know when that is going to be. Do you or anyone else know the release date for the UK? As nice as this phone is, the iphone has set the bar in terms of touch screen, but time will tell how good the N900 is..
the current release is november the 25st. it's written on the german n900 product-page. on the uk-page I couldn't find a date, but I think nov. 25st is the general release for each country.
There isnt an MMS stack currently. They are working on it and will be available in the coming period after the device is launched. Nokia is very good at supporting their devices + its a linux based, open-sourced OS. You can compile whatever you like with it! :)
When Nokia stock was sinking this summer. They were in the lab creating IMO, the best mobile device this year and next. This seems to do ever thing well enough, and I can't wait to purchase this when it comes out for T-Mobile. Bravo! Nokia.
hmm maybe, I dunno if you have tried the n97 or not but thats always in portrait when the keyboard is out and most tests i've seen on youtube for the n900 are with the keypads popped up.. I really can't see them not having a portrait mode tbh. We'll have to wait and see. :)
droid will be using capacitive touch screens (like iphone screens) or pressure touch screens (like n900, no multitouch, you will have to use force and fingernails)?
@shah2323 When using a finger, the iphone of course has the better touchscreen because it reacts instantly in the first moment, the finger touches the screen. at the n900 you've got to impact two films, before the screen reacts. but this method is more precise.
@snuski Yes... but the LCD Hardware of n900 is capable of 16million colours... the Maemo is still on its beta state and just supporting 65,000 colours up to now... but they will soon update it to maximize LCD Capabillities..
looks great, the precision of the mouse pointer in the browser is only possible with a resistive screen. you don't have to zoom in to click on links to navigate, which makes surfing a more efficient experience. HOPE THIS IS LAUNCHED IN SINGAPORE SOON!
Well since Maemo 5 is still new, there's currently no MMS, but since we're talking about Nokia they won't leave a simple feature like this left out.. And even if they released this phone/internet tablet without MMS capabilities, they will definately update the software later on that has MMS capabilities.
OMG so fast! I hope there's a fully customizable UI & filing system. Would really love to get this thing as minimal as possible and see it fly over the bremuda triangle and survive intact.
Hopefully they've modified the lens cover slightly so it doesn't scratch. I haven't had any issues with my n97 lens though. Most of the N97's bugs are software related, so right off the bat the n900 will be much less buggy because it runs a superior OS to that on the n97's.
I'm little worried about the processor because some say that it doesn't have enough power to run the phone, but in the other hand in that video it seems very smooth, and the OS is Linux based and Linux doesn't require so much resources from the device.
its all up to you, I am using the N97 since its release. Its good. Although the N900 look like a light year of technology away from N97, its probly not a bad idea to buy the N97 right now because its cheaper now since they have annouced the N900.
does the qwerty keyboard have lumination? If it does not thats a down side, I can't tell if it does or not in the video. My HTC has full lumination and boy does it help when its extremly dark, i can see all the keys nice and bright. Anyone know if N900 has the same feature?
Got some hands on time with this yesterday at the Nokia Store in NYC. It's smaller than I thought it would be. So if you have large hands/thumbs you may have some struggles with the keyboard. Other than that - I can't wait for mines to ship!! P.S. No one at the store had info on the exact release date.
One thing perplexes me. As he tries to move the site with the youtube videos to the right it seems to not work. Anyway i like the direction Nokia goes with Maemo.
why is the camera so slow? the image on the screen freezes at 2:24, while the picture shows the person walking through the picture, which happens at 2:26. why does it take 2 seconds to record a picture, and why does the camera fake it by freezing the picture two full seconds before that??? this has been irking me about cell phone cameras forever.
I got rid of my N97 because of the old OS and the slow response, the bad picture quality under low conditions since the double lcd flash sucks, I got an HTC touch pro2 as a trade, unlocked. I will get this N900 since it looks better and fast hopefully it has more memory for the apps, I hear it will use the OS and the app memory on the large 32gig memory....we will see...but I will get it as soon as it releases and will post a video review.
I had N800, after that device, my heart belongs to maemo :D Love it when I can programm my own apps easly. And the best part is I can access terminal! Haven't tried n900 though, but I guess it can be only better! I can't wait for mine :D
@giantfoottruck I did research or else I couldn't say that it was only available in 10 countries. "It was launched at Nokia World on 2 September 2009 and was released on 11 November 2009 in the United States and 9 European countries." ~Wiki Well good for you that you have it, but other Middle Eastern countries don't, like Turkey and Israel.
@smartintrepid honestly there's no such thing in my country, we have cell phone stores but not specific brand store and when the n900 comes out it will be extremely expensive
please, no bashing. as i am only stating the official information found on the official website. I am also hoping for it has 850/1900 HSDPA, but as far as it goes right now,we have to wait and see
I had to choose whether to get the Nomia N900 or Motorola milestone.. the nokia N900 is amazing and all.. but it was out of my budget to get. i waited months for the N900's successor and it won't be released till 2011 so i bought the milestone for it being cheaper and having a little better things. When the Nokia E7 or N9 comes out in 2011 im getting them for sure. I just needed to get a phone to replace my ancient nokia 5200. Plus Maemo has no support its done. Thats a problem too.
I still think that the iphone has the best touch screen i have come across... The Nokia, is however looking very impressive with all the multi-tasking, and web browsing. Lets see how it actually is once it's launched!!
Well each to their own. If you really want Windows mobile on your device, then go for it. The videos I saw looked like it's not the device for me. Maybe it's the 110 MB storage vs the 32GB on the N900.
Not sure if you're lashing out at me or just Nokia. I will assume the latter for the time being... I mostly agree with you. Basically, like you, I think MMS is old and uselss . However, many people do care about it, since most people do not have a smart phones. They have dumb "feature" phones and could care less about the ability to IM and haven't the faintest idea what a "Skype" is. N900 is for people that understand that better alternatives exist. MMS is old technology for the masses.
the autofocus is not the reason why taking a picture takes two seconds. autofocus happens by tapping the release button *before* pressing it fully. look at the screen. as the release button is pressed, a still image is shown - but it's only a *fake*. In fact, the photo ending up on your sd card is from 2 seconds after - during which you have no feedback of what the camera is looking at, which is *annoying*. no, digital cameras don't do that. why do phone cameras?
I tried this phone today, and I wish Nokia would have gone to town with the UI. It still has the same icons as S60! Compare the UI to the Iphone, HTC Hero or LG's BL40 Chocolate and it looks so stale. Same for the media player - sex it up a bit Finland! This has the power to handle great 3D graphics, so use it! Would also have preferred dedicated call/end call buttons, because even though Nokia say it's a mini netbook, it really is a much improved N97. Maemo will kick serious butt tho'.
what about the music quality? i have 5800 and quality is fantastic but gaming.... no way. so i thought this phone but still i want the same good sound quality. i compared my phone sound quality to n97 and you can see big difference in both of them
Actually, its not that bad. I was depressed about the face they released N900 like 2 days after the N97. As i was prepared to upgrade from N97 to N900. I found out on the official pre order link on nokia usa website, that there will not be 850 nor 1900 frequency for the N900. So....We have to see.
A bit laggy, but that will probably improve with time. A bit boring UI IMO, only in landscape? I´d like an answering button and end call-button, totally buttonfree front isreally a disadvantage. I´m totally getting the Satio, that comes with a real camera, xenon flash AND led. 7fps at 12Mp.. Beautiful UI and it´s smoooooooth flowing.. The Sonyericsson Satio lacks nothing!
Also, I really don't see the purpose of MMS now-a-days, I've always had Nokia phones (which they all have MMS), but I've probably used the MMS 3 times over lots and lots of years. And since this is 2009 going to 2010, I really do think that MMS is just not useful, since you can use other services.
I am hoping this will be my next phone. Thanks for doing this video.
Lag issues are normally sorted out with firmware updates before the phone is ready to ship, or just after. This is a pre-production model so you can't really expect it to be the end user experience.

@Killerrado nope... it's 800 x 480.. n900 is WVGA (Wide VGA) Screen.
VGA is 640 x 480
WVGA of n900 is 800 x 480... (higher resolution than the n97)
There isnt an MMS stack currently. They are working on it and will be available in the coming period after the device is launched.

Do you have to set up a plan for the phone system

Thanks Mark.
Loving the moose pointer ;).
Web browser looks so smooth. N900. I want one!

And do it have a tilt screen like the Touch Pro2? It would be cool if it did.
Hopefully they've modified the lens cover slightly so it doesn't scratch. I haven't had any issues with my n97 lens though.

Can i browse/surf the internet using this phone in a non 3G Area? Cuz here in the philippines 3G signals are n selected cities only.
One thing perplexes me. As he tries to move the site with the youtube videos to the right it seems to not work.
Anyway i like the direction Nokia goes with Maemo.
can you do bluetooth tethering on this?

Love it when I can programm my own apps easly. And the best part is I can access terminal! Haven't tried n900 though, but I guess it can be only better! I can't wait for mine :D
I notice some serious lag between shooting the picture and the picture that is saved !!
I just ordered it. I'm looking forward to the experience.
@giantfoottruck
I did research or else I couldn't say that it was only available in 10 countries. "It was launched at Nokia World on 2 September 2009 and was released on 11 November 2009 in the United States and 9 European countries."
~Wiki
Well good for you that you have it, but other Middle Eastern countries don't, like Turkey and Israel.
does any body know if the nokia n900 has a camera?
i really need to know thanks!!
you can still connect to wifi networks if you want to use 7mbps
I'm getting mine in less than 6 hours. Been saving for it.
It's already there. Search for pixelpipe on N900 - it supports Picasa, Myspace, and dozens more.
@mrkiss3 yes... it does have
nope, it'll work in portrait mode too. It has an accelerometer to automatically switch between modes like most smartphones.
@ucb357 yep... way better than n97... higher resolution, great new OS, un-awkward keypad, and cleaner looks...
It's the FM receiver that doesn't have nokia software support - the transmitter works from the box.
Hey Mark, why didn't you ask him when it's coming to the US?? That's the more important "When is it coming out" question.
does it support java? pls answer.
It is also found in Lebanon!
will get mine next week
N900 roxxs btw. Will buy it. But camera it too slow :(
Hope it supports good sync with Outlook!

Please tell me some one thatt how i can transfer my contact from sim card to N900.will be thankful
newegg has them for pre-order at $559.99 with their posted release date of November 14th
Agreed. With this CPU and graphics acceleration, I'd expect it to be much more fluid.
If they can fix this issue, they'll likely get my $650.
Hi #UN#, big fan of your vids here :)
cant wait to get mine, about to order it
please, no bashing. as i am only stating the official information found on the official website. I am also hoping for it has 850/1900 HSDPA, but as far as it goes right now,we have to wait and see
@snuski. no It has over 16 million colour. and 400:800 display.
I had to choose whether to get the Nomia N900 or Motorola milestone.. the nokia N900 is amazing and all.. but it was out of my budget to get. i waited months for the N900's successor and it won't be released till 2011 so i bought the milestone for it being cheaper and having a little better things. @snuski
I just got mine hours ago. All I could say is WOW. You'll love it.
Love this phone. But it sucks me cuz one of the Most important features for me is missing--- the MMS. It doesn't support MMS. Too bad
I still think that the iphone has the best touch screen i have come across... The Nokia, is however looking very impressive with all the multi-tasking, and web browsing. Lets see how it actually is once it's launched!!
