"Mein Vater war ein Wnadersmann" (My father was a wayfarer), also known as "Der fröhliche Wanderer" (The Happy Wanderer), is a German hiking song that goes back to a text by Friedrich Sigismund from the beginning of the 19th century. The melody, according to which the song has been primarily sung since the early 1950s, comes from Friedrich Wilhelm Möller. Under the title "The Happy Wanderer", the song became known in English-speaking countries from the end of 1953.
    ♬ LYRICS ♬
    1. Mein Vater war ein Wandersmann
    Und mir steckt's auch im Blut;
D'rum wand're ich froh, so lang ich kann
    Und schwenke meinen Hut.
    Faleri, falera
Faleri, falera ha ha ha ha ha ha
    Faleri, falera
    Und schwenke meinen Hut.
    2. Das Wandern schafft stets frische Lust,
    Erhält das Herz gesund,
    Frei atmet draußen meine Brust,
    Froh singet stets mein Mund.
    Faleri, falera
Faleri, falera ha ha ha ha ha ha
    Faleri, falera
    Froh singet stets mein Mund.
    3. Warum singt Dir das Vögelein
    So freudevoll sein Lied?
    Weil's nimmer hockt! Landaus, landein
    Durch and're Fluren zieht.
    Faleri, falera
Faleri, falera ha ha ha ha ha ha
    Faleri, falera
    Durch and're Fluren zieht.
    4. Was murmelt's Bächlein dort und rauscht
    Faleri, falera
Faleri, falera ha ha ha ha ha ha
    Faleri, falera
    Ein Wanderbursche sein.

My dad played this and many other traditional songs every Friday night. Mum would be out playing bingo and when we went to bed, Dad would put on his records.
Such a beautiful childhood memory I treasure now.
    Love you dad. ❤

Autumn '65, I cycled to Bad Salzuflen youth hostel. After abendessen of boiled potato, boiled cabbage and weisswurst, everybody trekked by moonlight up Obernberg, singing Mein Vater war ein Wandersmann ...

I just found it in the archive of the men's choir, I am a member of (since 13 years now). It was given to them at Christmas of the year 1958 by their brother in song named E. Wiele. That's 65 years ago, nine years before you learned it at your college.

There is an error in the translation: "Das Wandern schafft stets frische Lust." does not mean "Wandering takes care of fresh air." (which might rather be "frische Luft"). It means instead: "Hiking always creates new joy."

Same here! We were in Heidelberg 70-72 and then Bamberg 72-74. Did you do any volksmarching while there? I remember after a 10 klicks march there would always be a glorious beer tent playing that song and others. We'd sit at long tables and interlock arms with other volksmarchers and sing along while swaying from side to side.

The "lyric" may be a 19th century poem, but the song goes back no further than 1946, when the poem was set to music for a famous German children's choir, Die Schaumburger Märchensänger.

@@HerrFriedrich Oh no, I hate this guy! He created the "Fischer Chöre", a mass choir, with several hundred members. Mr. Fischer was the one, who was directing the performances and got all the publicity, but behind the scenes, other conductors did the rehearsal work. And those were never mentioned in public. Being a member of a choir myself, I know, that the rehearsals are the place, where most of the hard work is done.
Ok, in the beginning, he was probably doing the rehearsals himself, and its also a great achievement to create something that big as those mass choirs, but he always keep the appearance, that he did everything on his own, which was not true.

I'm german and never knew there was lyrics to this tune 😆
    Translation needs improvement though!
"wayfarer" is an odd translation. I would go for "hiker" or "traveller"... then again, maybe it matches the oddity of the word "Wandersmann", wich is not common use anymore, either.
"schwenke meinen Hut" needs to be translated as "wave my hat". "Pivot" is not correct in this context.
I'm not sure if the lyrics are "frische Luft" (in that case "takes care of fresh air" is a lose but accurate translation) or "frische Lust" (then it would be more like "always gets your spirits up"). I think the latter is the correct one.
    das Vögelein: "the little birdy"
Not "never stops by" but "never sits still"
