Charming Old Fuel Can Brought Back To Life - Restoration

  • This week im tackling another restoration of an item that will be on display in my new workshop so it wont be a meticulous restoration process just a fun one to get the can looking good enough to display and be interesting to look at.
    So with that being said as usual the first job is a visual inspection and at first glance the can looks in good shape, Im not worried about the lack of pouring spout as this will be on display and the spout wouldn't be fitted anyway.
    The first job was to sand blast away all the rust and old paint from the can so that we can see clearly what we are working with. After blasting it was clear that there were a couple of holes in the base that would need to be welded up in order for this piece to be fuel tight again so i got out the mig welder and set it to a nice low setting and welded the holes up and then ground the welds beck down flush again.
    I then proceeded to place the can in a bath of warm DEOX C overnight to remove all remaining rust from the can inside and out, one this was done and dried off i then sealed the inside of the tank to prevent any rusting of the steel in the future this was left to set then i moved onto the next stage.
    The next stage was the body working stage. I straightened out the handles with a custom made straightening tool then move onto filing any off any defects that i found in the metal. I then laid down a thin layer of body filler to fill the pitting left by the removed rust. Once dried and sanded the can was ready for primer.
    I applied and etch primer then 3 coats of high build 2k to give me plenty of material thickness to wet flat back any defects that i found. once this was done i applied a few layers of blue top coat and while this was curing i made the stencil for the ESSO BLUE lettering.
    The stencil was applied and painted with a nice vintage cream colour, Once dried the stencil was removed but unfortunately as i had used a top coat to paint over the stencil rather than a base coat the edges didn't come up as clean as i hoped and left me with a few rags but they wont be noticeable when up on its display shelf so i was happy to leave them.
    The cap was zinc plated and cured with a blue passivate to give a durable shiny silver finish and finish off the look of the can and that wrapped up this restoration.
    I hope you enjoy it and ill see you all in the next video.

      For the stencil, did you let the paint fully dry before peeling it? If so, try taking the stencil off while the paint is still tacky. It comes off much more cleanly that way. Cool looking can though.

    beautifull....you should not peel off tape or stencils when the paint is cured....best time to peel off is when the paint is almost dry to the touch but not cured yet..

    • @RRCRestoration
      @RRCRestoration  4 года назад +1

      Hi, the problem was that i used a top coat paint to paint over the stencil with and top coat doesn't respond well to delicate stenciling, i should have used base and cleared over it like i usually do.. lesson learned haha

    • @MrHBSoftware
      @MrHBSoftware 4 года назад

      @@RRCRestoration yes that would work better,basecoat is thin and not very hard so it doesnt chip...... but try on a scrap piece, even if you use 2k paint (direct gloss) you can peel tape off very well if you dont let it harden...you need to peel in that period were you can touch it lightly without damaging it and the dust doesnt stick to it anymore but if you stick a fingernail on the paint you can scrape it...i usually peel off all the tape 30 mintes after painting, its a bit nerve wrecking though... i also noticed that maybe you have a very small nozzle on your gun, or the paint was too thick because it took a lot of passes to paint..maybe you set it like that because i has lots of crevices and to avoid paint runs??i prefer large nozzle and thinner paint, i paint in fast strokes and get a very nice smooth finish without polishing... i am not criticizing, you did a wonderfull job

    This brings back memories. There were (as far as I can remember) two paraffin makes: Esso Blue and Pink Paraffin. The actual paraffin was coloured blue and pink respectively. The paraffin man would drive onto our housing estate with a small tanker on the back of his vehicle and people would bring out their cans to be filled. The stuff smelled terrible!

      Hi thanks for sharing your memories with us :) I just googled the pink paraffin as i was intrigued was it by called Aladdin pink paraffin? I quite like the smell of paraffin but im strange that way haha

    I have always heard that you should peel off paint masks or stencils before the paint is completely dry to aid in soft edges. Nice work though! Hope the weather in your part of the world is better than we're getting in North Central Texas right now.

    • @RRCRestoration
      @RRCRestoration  4 года назад

      Yeah ,the rough edges were my fault entirely this time as i tried to cheat and use the wrong typre of paint and i paind the price for it... oh well you learn from your mistakes as they say ;). The weather here is dreadful at the moment pretty much constant wind and rain, Its really annoying as i want to get the Ducati out and get some final footage for you guys :(

    If you pull the stencil off before it cures it’ll come off a lot cleaner, when I was in an auto body shop I’d pull it off 15-20 minutes after I sprayed just have to be super careful

    Silly question: how did you have a uniform coat of the inside with that thick epoxy mixture?? I have a similar project and have no way to coat the inside of the tank in an even fashion.

    • @RRCRestoration
      @RRCRestoration  4 года назад +3

      I dont think its actually possible to get a 100% even coating all the way round without making some rotating device that constantly re-orients the can/tank until the epoxy dries all you can really do is calculate roughly how much epoxy you need to mix and keep turning the tank till the epoxy starts to dry but you'll inevitably end up with a thicker coating on the surface that you leaving it sitting on to cure.
