I have the same problem of yours: once the robot has some speed and inertia it keeps going and does not stop. I have been struggling with this problem and cannot find a solution.
My robot chassis and construction is very similar to yours.
Now I have decided to buy better quality dc motors with encoder sensor, hope to solve the issue
