This was the music of my time. Driving around the country roads, drinking, smoking a lot of pot, the beach, parties or just someone's house vibing to this mix of great 70s music are memories that will forever be in my mind and heart. This was literally on the radio all the time and I was in kindergarten first grade second grade third grade really it lasted for years. It's amazing. Search really interesting trying to analyze it from an older musician point of view now that I'm 60. But still that feeling remains and I think that's the key to this song, it's got some cool wah guitar solo stuff but, When this was new it seemed so new and we all took it fairly seriously

Even back in the 60s the music industry had a grip on artists, with many stories of artists fighting the system and trying to break free which they did much of the time from the late 60s and throughout the 70s and into the 90s. For instance the Beatles were at their best when they founded their own record label, Apple Records. But that war for artistic freedom and integrity has been lost decades ago to the large media conglomerates. I think one reason why we see so many solo artists today instead of great ensemble bands is that a single artist is easier to control and cheaper to keep under contract. It's all about efficiency nowadays.
At the time this came out,there was so many great bands with so many great songs that it seems now we were in some kind of vortex or expanding understanding of how music would affect all people.The lessons of this song can be broken down to what you said.Seems like he got away with something and now he's gonna do it again.Once we get to the position that we won't do it again we can move into the Light
I agree with your analysis, about "new" music. I would listen to it if bands/groups/artists, would get WAY more creative. Great music is great music whether it's 50 years old or brand new
The musicians of the 60's and 70's thru the early 80's were all at the top of their game It seems that there is little incentive to become an actual musician anymore. With all the technology we have today where stars are all marketing gimmicks and fakery, i fear our music will all be AI in the near future. And the next generation won't care or appreciate what was lost

This song is the ultimate groove. My favorite song from Steely Dan. Cautionary tale of giving in to your vices that could ruin your life. The enticement makes you "Do It Again," even though you know it's bad for you. Great analysis on the musical side. The 60s, 70s and 80s are when artists were truly artist - creative and unique. I grew up with the best music. Luckily, it is recorded for younger and future generations to enjoy and appreciate.

Can you imagine being this good off of their first album and then maintaining or even get better and better as they progressed in their production and choices of studio musicians! A total classic tune!After this album they stopped touring and so Donald and Walter could focus on production only using the best studio musicians along with these 2 magicians, (Donald and Walter)!SHAWN, back in the 1970’s many albums were great because so much was put into each and every song with no fillers! I could name fifty or maybe even a hundred albums that great song after great song. Competition was fierce in a good way!
I thought George did fine, but was really surprised when I saw Ravi Shankar interviewed about it. He basically said he sucked, though politely. Guess there’s quite a high standard in India.
When I see this album cover or listen to this song I’m immediately jettisoned back to 1973, driving from Syracuse, NY up to Oswego State to visit my friend for the weekend. My little cassette player sitting on the passenger seat playing Can’t Buy A Thrill at full volume. This album has stood the test of time.
My opinion is younger people have had technology to distract them from learning to play a musical instrument. It's really sad to witness. It's "easier" to use technology than it is to put in the time and effort of learning to play an instrument.
Steely Dan hired the best available musicians, took many many takes of the same part until it was just right (as many as 50 takes), spent many hours on the production and mixing in order to get a product that was as close to perfect as was possible in the name of art. Record companies now don’t want to make that kind of investment but want to make a quick buck. 50 years from now I would guess that people will still listening to Steely Dan but probably not Lil Nas X.
The only thing better than listening to this song, is watching someone else hear this great song for the first time.😁👍

There is some sound overlap between these guys and Santana. His voice here even sounds a bit like Greg Rollie in a few songs.
