thanks so much for this upload! i have seen a lot of old paragliders and im fascinated about this old stuff! i learnt flying few years ago and when i was 13, i had an old paraglider (from 1997) for groundhandling!
I lived in Germany for over 2 years and the word that I learned then that expresses my view of those pioneering days is Sagenhaft!
Thanks for posting this piece of history! Loved it!
Die GoPro bei Minute 15 ist ja geil...
Boy…big parachutes on steroids. I, already a HG pilot in Massachusetts, a friend in 1988 introduced me to his new PG, a new French ATV design. The wing and its harness came linked together. The winds were too light for HG’s at Cape Cod, so I got my very first PG try ever getting three short soaring flights - via a Man Tow rope crew from the beach below.
Little did free flyers know back in the late 60’s that both disciplines started out about the same time, only the Rolgallo wing won out over the Sail Wing invented by David Parish’s early experiments in the North East. Of course the new rectangle parachutes were a great influence on sail wing design. Early PG flying caught on fire in the middle 80’s in Europe and we’ve never looked back since.
Some paragliders actually DID catch on fire! ruclips.net/video/xjLILOFbfRg/видео.htmlsi=esCx7aAPOoYvmEUn And by the way, modern hang gliders were never Rogallo wings and no patented Rogallo wing ever flew.
These wings seem like some of the worst glide ratio i can imagine. If the day is strong enough though! The helicopter looked easier(3:33),less shoot on exit. Cool piece of history.
When round canopies were standard, glide angle was 0:1. When the Para Commander achieved about .2 to 1 it must have felt like a God Send to be able to make a teenie bit of forward progress in zero wind.
