You might know you're a pentaholic if you listen to Christmas music year-round. 😉
Yes, Kevin suggested this one, and is the source of the African vibes you're getting. He said that in his parents' church sacred music was something you could dance to. And it's practically impossible to listen to this rendition of "O Come All Ye Faithful" without dancing.
I love this song; it's my favorite Christmas song. Can you imagine Christmas carolers singing "O Come All Ye Faithful" this way? It wouldn't be long before the caroling turned into an impromptu block party.

Avi (pronounced Ah'-vee) left Pentatonix in 2017, so this was one of the last songs he performed as a member. This was released on their 2016 Christmas album, "A Pentatonix Christmas."
Another song from the same album is "Hallelujah," and Pentatonix still performs it. In "Hallelujah" Pentatonix has the bass sing a solo for verse 2. And Matt's arrangement of the second verse of "Hallelujah" was written specifically for Matt's voice, just as Avi's arrangement was written specifically for Avi's voice. The best way I know to compare their voices is to listen to a recording of "Hallelujah" made with Avi and then listen to a recording made with Matt. (Note that I say "compare." Matt and Avi are not in competition; Avi no longer wants to be in Pentatonix while Matt is overjoyed to be a member. But their voices are different, as they should be, and it's legitimate to notice those differences.) You can find a live performance of "Hallelujah" from 2016, with Avi, here: ruclips.net/video/haFHrfmfHbc/видео.htmlsi=bLzoDQEiDXcWNyPu and a live performance from their most recent world tour, with Matt, here: ruclips.net/video/ASYzLoi810k/видео.html

@@mkayandnkayreacts5329 I've heard the following description, which I'd say is fairly accurate: Matt's voice is like a soft sweater, still warm from the drier. Avi's voice is like drinking a glass of whiskey next to the fire - a bonfire.
When watching reaction videos I've noticed that, no matter who is soloing, the moment Avi's accompaniment begins the reactors go gaga over the wonderful bass. When Matt's accompaniment begins they don't notice. But they say things like "Kevin must be running a real drum track; he couldn't possibly get that sound just from beatboxing." They're half right - it isn't "just" beatboxing; it's beatboxing plus bass. But they don't hear the bass as something separate when it's coming from Matt the way they do when it's coming from Avi, so they attribute the richness of the sound to cheating. So that's the first difference; Matt is more subtle than Avi.
The second difference has to do with range. Avi is a true basso profundo. Matt isn't, at least not yet (I'm told bass voices improve with age and Matt is the youngest member of Pentatonix, so this is subject to change). On the high end, however, Avi's range reaches to about the middle of a normal tenor range. Matt's range seems to go nearly as high as Scott's range; he gets very close to the top of a normal tenor range. And this thing about bass voices improving with age is the reason I specified a recent performance for Matt; watching Matt's range is a lot like watching a kid in the middle of a growth spurt - he's growing practically on a daily basis.
There's a third difference as well, and I suspect this one is by choice. Matt doesn't do overtone singing. There are two reasons I think this is by choice:
      1. Overtone singing isn't hard to learn and Matt has four experts who could teach him. Here's Avi explaining how to do it: ruclips.net/video/fEEAfNij_JU/видео.html and this is an interview where the trio and Kevin demonstrate that they also know how to do it: ruclips.net/video/FKm5zNC-maE/видео.html (the question about overtone singing begins at 17:11, but the whole interview is worth watching). And since Avi's explanation wasn't quite enough for me to understand how to do it, here's a tutorial I found: ruclips.net/video/w42DQoZ-z_c/видео.html The thing is, my voice is nothing special, but I'm actively learning to do overtone singing from the tutorial; it really is that easy.
      2. When pentaholics think of overtone singing they think of Avi; it has been inextricably linked to Avi in our minds. And Matt isn't trying to be Avi. Were Matt to start doing overtone singing it would likely lead people to think that he's trying to be more like Avi, which would put Matt firmly in second place in a competition that shouldn't be happening at all.

    • @margretrosenberg420
      @margretrosenberg420 Год назад

@@vidsorama2 True. But my comment about what I've noticed during reaction videos wasn't about reactors specifically comparing Matt with Avi; it was just the difference I've seen in how they react. Think of Pentatonix's -cover- upgrade of "The Prayer." Everybody loves it, right? And every reactor comments on how beautiful Mitch sounds, because, duh. And a few reactors say that they're surprised that it isn't Kirstie singing Celine Dion's part. Those are all straightforward, honest reactions. What they AREN'T are comparisons between Mitch's voice and Kirstie's voice. Basically, they're all reactions to the beauty of Mitch's voice. What it tells me when a reactor expresses surprise that it isn't Kirstie singing that part is simply that the reactor doesn't know Pentatonix very well, not that the reactor thinks Kirstie has a better voice. And when we hear that kind of reaction someone will gently explain that Mitch is a contratenor with a huge range and is known for his ethereal high vocals, and we'll probably introduce the concept of a Mitch slap. If we mention Kirstie it will be to point out how she belts out her own high vocals when her voice is backing up Mitch's voice.
So reactors who don't realize that Matt's bass is one reason Kevin's beatboxing sounds so good don't realize that they're reacting differently than they would if Avi were singing bass; they aren't thinking about Avi and Matt at all. They're thinking about Kevin, and their reaction tells me something about Matt, but only because I know that the rhythm section isn't just the beatboxer, it's the beatboxer AND the bass. Am I making sense? I don't mean to sound incoherent but I fear that I do.

Since you mentioned Avi (Avriel Benjamin Kaplan) I am sending you this.
This is One of the last performances of Avi's from 2022 in December.
If you do not know, Avi is Jewish but his family believes in Jesus.
Avi, pronounce Ah Vee, is a classically/operatically trained Basso Profundo.
He was the one to suggested the group hire Matt after he left PTX>
This is a fan cam so there is not copyright on it.
    Avi Kaplan
The most beautiful rendition of O Holy Night I have ever heard.
