    Great rRuss. I just did my 1st 20 miles today. Only been riding for 3 months an 69 yrs old. Had a heart attach Jan. 28. So it’s been slow. I’ve lost 35lbs do to a vegetarian diet and exercise. I love black bean burritos and cheese. Keep up the great videos. Good luck at dirty kansa.

    Happy and a little relieved you got out there and did some genuine long distance: you can manage your power but you don’t know fueling and comfort (clothing) until you’re out past that 4-hour mark. Great job!

    Recently I did 150 miles with about 20% unpaved and some really hilly English countryside . Before this Ive never done a ride over 70miles so I wasnt quite sure how it would work out. Luckly I had very nice spring weather and a slight tailwind. I didnt track my ride I only used my gps to navigate. I found it really nice not to know how far I was and how fast I was going, everything was on feel. It turned out really well and I wasnt as destroyed as I thought it would be. Just make sure you have enough calories with you to sustain your energy level.

    • @PathLessPedaledTV
      @PathLessPedaledTV  6 лет назад +1

      Not tracking metrics is our preferred way to ride, but this was a training ride and had to stick to a specific heart rate zone and speed. Can't wait until DK200 is done so I don't have to stare at the computer anymore.

    the perspective you gain by doing a long gravel event is priceless. When you see the finishing times of the elite riders after riding the route yourself it's mind boggling, and doesn't seem humanly possible. I can't wait to see Tinker Juarez's time for Chino Grinder! I'm wimping out of doing the event I did last year because even though I had trained as hard as I possibly could it still completely crushed me (granted I was sick) and I just don't have the will to put myself through 9+ hours of hell again. I've done longer rides on asphalt since, but that's the beach compared to the pounding your body takes on gravel. I think feet may be the most overlooked factor, every vibration goes through them and after 7hrs you have to find a way make your mind leave your body to escape the pain :) Enjoy!

  • @WildOutdoorLiving
    @WildOutdoorLiving 6 лет назад +6

    Great job on an awesome milestone! You never forget that first 100 mile day. Solo centuries are brutal mentally though. I would suggest a couple of things: Very few people underestimate long distances like this but it is possible to overestimate them too. Going a little too slow can add up big time, a 7 or 8 hour day is almost always easier than a 10 or 11 hour day. Not sure what your pacing is like for you but I've definitely done that before and it hurts! Also no shame in employing some roadie tactics, aerodynamics matter especially in the wind. Lycra is okay, saddle bags are much more aero than handlebar bags and if you only carried a single gopro on DK none of us (your viewers) would complain. I can promise you though that the event will be waay more fun. There's way more energy with everyone around, there will be groups to draft with and at the end it will feel incredibly momentous! Best of luck!

    • @PathLessPedaledTV
      @PathLessPedaledTV  6 лет назад +5

      Our pacing strategy is dictated by heart rate zones. Trying to ride as much as we can in Zone 2, which is sort of slow but should keep us from popping too soon. It's frustrating, because we can ride faster, but need to keep it in check so we can finish.

    The Dirty Kanza is the real deal. It’s not just an ultra endurance ride but add in the wind, hills, gravel, mud, heat, cold and everything else. You are right to train but I mostly saw paved roads. Unlike that one respondent said you will have to take more than a Cliff bar and extra tube. Be prepared for all eventualities. Training with those items now allows you to adjust your kit. Keep it up, but think about some significantly long rides that will approximate the DK road conditions.

    You definitely want to get in another century and maybe something closer to 150 miles. I have done numerous centuries and longer. I have found after 160 miles it becomes more of a mental issue than physical for myself. It's definitely better when riding with someone to keep up the momentum and moral. I rode a double century solo last year, after mile 180, it got super tough to keep up my motivation. Good luck on DK200, be sure and eat & drink regularly to keep up your energy levels. Don't stuff yourself, but eat small amounts every 25-30 miles, that worked for me. You don't want your digestion to pull blood from your muscles, find easy to digest foods and don't over do it with gels.

    • @nathanmace3936
      @nathanmace3936 6 лет назад +1

      John Day , agreed. I have a double under my belt. I ride a 160 race ever year. Six so far. Gels are crap. Remember your body can at most digest 200 calories an hour to be if it your ride. Anything else is a waste. Any hundo is worth doing in my book. Embrace the distance. Many have rode 100 but few have 200.

    Just curious, what was on the play list? I like music on my long rides, but usually only ride with one ear bud in for safety. I'm relatively new to the channel & love it. I just got my first gravel bike about 6 weeks ago (Salsa Journeyman).Two close calls last year, so I had to get off the streets. I realize this is an older post, but just watched it for the first time.

  • @H457ur
    @H457ur 6 лет назад +1

    11.8mph! That's almost exactly my average speed over the last 12 months (just over 11,000 miles). I frequently do hundred mile rides and I'm never bored, but I have a neurological pain syndrome and I feel better when I'm moving -- even after 100 miles, I feel better than I would if I was sitting on the couch. My tagline: "It only hurts when I stop." So I try not to stop.
    I'm not entirely sure if it will help in your case, but I ride dirt, gravel, and some mud on 58mm road tires (26" wheels), or 38mm and 44mm road tires (700c) [insert Compass Tire plug here]. The fact that you're on knobby tires might be sucking a bit of joy out of your riding.

    I'm excited to hear what you think of the Soma Cazaderos (I think that's what you're rocking in this?) I just did 73 miles on my 700x42c pair on similar terrain last weekend. The ideal tire pressure is yet to be decided, especially on long rides where you start to hate the subtle sound of knobs on a paved descent.

    Riding 100mi is not boring but it needs to be done differently. On my frequent 100mi rides I spend a whole day on bike. Take multiple short breaks (for pictures) and one hour-long for lunch. Make it interesting by planning ahead to visit interesting places on the way. It doesn't need to be a race.

    I know you guys aren't roadies and you like your touring and bikepacking, plus you've got your camera gear, but I still can't help but feel like you super overpack for these one day rides. I regularly do 60-70 miles with one clif bar and a spare tube stuffed in my jersey. Do you really need a frame bag full of burritos? Easiest way for ya'll to make those DK cut-offs would be to seriously scale down.

    • @PathLessPedaledTV
      @PathLessPedaledTV  6 лет назад +1

      If all you're eating on a 60-70 mile ride is one Clif Bar, you're burning far more calories than you're consuming, which isn't good. However, that being said, I agree that you can fit all you need for a century in jersey pockets and a small saddle bag.

    Congrats. an unsupported solo century in real-world conditions is a worthy achievement. But I am a bit concerned with how little you seemed to enjoy this ride -- hopefully your enjoyment of the event you are training is worth the suffering here.

      It’s made me realize this really isn’t the kind of riding I like to do. Don’t know till u try.

    Have you considered contact lenses? I wear them instead of my glasses when riding and its so so much better, especially in the wet. Thats of course if you can wear them, not sutaible for everyone.

      Wore contacts for years, but cant do them now. Eyes dry out too quickly.

    "I dunno how people do it"(handle the boredom) a little Bluetooth waterproof speaker goes a long way for me. I just put on a podcast or an audiobook too cut the monotony of a safe trail.

    This video depicts exactly how grueling and boring I would assume a century ride to be... Congrats on the milestone!! Good luck on the DK!!

      nothing. Music (with one headphone out thank you very much) and friends help but it's always nice to just clear your head too

      Riding a hundred miles for a hundred miles sake just never had any appeal (actually still doesn't).
