One more point: Sati wasn't as widespread as people think. Some missionaries during the British rule saw one, and sensationalised the whole thing as a regular occurrence to portray native Indians as barbarians who needed to be 'reformed' (read 'converted'). The whole thing was blown way out of proportion. Hindu religious literatures are full of women who didn't commit Sati - Ex: The mother of Rama, the mother of the Pandavas, the wife of Ravana etc.
