Back in the early eighties I put a 1/16 chevy van kit together that was pretty much the same. It had 4-wheel drive and sidepipes and the big tires. It even had a bed in it too. But the one thing that made it "unique" was it had a reel to reel tape player where the sink/stove was located in your kit. Hey, it was the late seventies/early eighties! See ya!
Awesomeness!! That's not a fireplace, it's the ventilation for the kitchen stove thingy, it goes right above it. Awesome detail to add, as is everything else! Such a cool kit, detailers can go absolutely to town with this!! :^) Thanks for the review man :^)
Coolest review yet, you made me smile...like a kid at Christmas/Hanukkah. I hope you do the build review, I can't wait until you post the build review! I'd fully build the engine, attempt to get the piston position correct, then take pictures of the partially built block to show all of the hidden details! Definite want!!!!!! Thank you, sir.
I'm so glad you reviewed this kit. I'll have to pick up one. MPC in the 70s actually released a series of these wonderful 1/20 vans: Slammer, which simulates a rolling jail cell 1970 Econoline Chateau Club 1971 Econoline Utility Van Wizard Ironside from the TV Show; this kit includes his wheel chair and ramp!, Giant Visible Van; lots of clear parts to show off the detailed custom interior. Supervan
Awesome kit review!! I'm getting one off of ebay cause my local craft & hobby stores no longer carry these kits. I love your energy & excitement as you discover new cool parts, you have me laughing & glad that I finally got one for myself that I'll be building for Tim Hulsey's Ford truck month! Thank you again & kutgw, peace!
Cool! Minor point, that ‘custom steering wheel’ is the horn ring for the stock steering wheel. This kit is a modified reissue of the kit of the ‘IRONSIDE’ tv series van, yet another tv license arranged by George Barris.
Nice review again, great technique using your hand behind the white plastic to get the camera to maintain focus! And used to have this one back in the day. Mine was yellow with simplified interior. Still have that thermos in the parts stash. The only part that remains...
You really need to build up some kind of two wall garage diorama. While this is 1/20 scale, a garage with a pegboard, a 1/20 poster of Farrah Fawcett, spare rims and hubs stacked in corner...when I build this, I know what I'm doing. Hobby Lobby is a great place. You make this look so easy!
That's an extraction fan hood you thought was a chimney. Loved the review, going on the wish list for sure, hope I can get it in the UK without paying through the nose.
Engine rocker cover shape is a Windsor block. 302 or 351 (Windsor, not Cleveland). These vans came with 302s. 351 Windsor is an almost direct swap and would be a likely choice in a vehicle like this. I’ve done the swap years ago and only the exhaust manifolds were changed to make it work.
...it's cold outside but the model action is hot !..lol that cracked me up. yet another great review, I just saw this on model roundup yesterday, complete with reel to reel deck and it caught my eye.
Chris this was a 70-75 Econoline Was issued in Several Forms This HiJacker Version was the only time best of my llknosledge in 4 X 4 Version It was Far more Commonly issued as a 2 wd kit in tons of different Versions. A Wild Mid 70,s Issue Version called the " Super Van " Had Deep n Shallow Aluminum Slotted Mags Super Side Tires on Rear a Water Bed TV. CB Radio Whip Antennea nice Diamond Button tuft interior a Custom hood n Grille. Super nice Detail Decal Graphics I built one at 13 years old. It was issued in Stock form at same time in # sd ,1 ton as Detective "Ironside" Raymond Burr as Det Robert Ironside. He was a cop.o. wheelchair still fighting crime Hence the Ironside Version. Wow! That is some amazing detail! Maybe you can get a spark and gas to that engine and fire it up! I never knew those MPC van kits were that nice. $17.99 at Hobby Lobby would be a steal! I wonder if they'll get it.
LOL. Ah, the trials of being a builder and collector. You have double the stash...:) I would be cool if they get it. I guess the alternative is finding one at a show sometime in the future.
Flooding with comments, sorry Chris :-) Did you ever build this beast, or is model in your "private collection" to be enjoyed in its prebuilt form. I have started my own collection of boxed models; darn you, darn you all to heck! LOL. My wife thinks I'm crazy "but you haven't built the last one yet!!!"
Probably. I'm just getting back into modeling, so I'm learning quick that if you want something you have to snatch it up right away. It sounds like the reissue numbers might be pretty limited to begin with. There's a reissue of the 1977 Ford Cruising Van coming out this fall, so that's some consolation.

Good call, I think you're right.
Logs must be for a diorama outside the van.

That's an awesome history lesson. I knew none of that about those kits. Very cool information. Thank you for adding that. :)
Was the Ironside van one of them?

Hey hpiguy the fireplace part for the kit is actually an exhaust vent for the stove.

I still have an unbuilt original. Great video!
Awesome pile of accessories! Great video thanks!
i remember this kit as a kid , i think ill have to pick this up again
Enjoy!
I'm not into vans, but how could anyone *_NOT_* have fun with this kit? So many accessories & ways to customize it!
Right on man!
Did you ever make this? It would be cool to see it if so!

Chris. The Scalemates Website has a Sort of near complete Timeline for this kit. It Shows The Super Van Wild Street Machine Version as 1976 Release
This looks very similar to a Ford van kit called The Wizard i has when i was a kid.
i know this video is a few years old but will keep my eye out for this kit just for all the extra stuff
Check ebay, may be some around. Enjoy!
I'll build this again when I get the chance.
WOW! Awesome kit! Must have! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching. :)

Very enjoyable vid Chris
Now that's a kit ! And A lot of plastic in this one , I was getting excited with ya : )
It's going on the list
Very cool
Thanks Corey! Yeah, I was pretty pumped. I love these kits with all the extra doo dads.
Great video, that is a sweet kit gotta pick one up soon as my LHS gets them in stock.
Thanks Rick, yeah I saw it in stock and had to grab it. I see it's now out of stock again at Tower. Must be a big seller, now I can see why.
I always thought taking care of the flashing was just part of the fun of building models
I agree, to some they think it's the end of the world!
Thanks man!

I sure hope they'd get it. I wouldn't mind owning two, one to build one to keep, but at $30 I'll stick with one for now.
LOL. Ah, the trials of being a builder and collector. You have double the stash...:) I would be cool if they get it. I guess the alternative is finding one at a show sometime in the future.
I built this kit in the 70's, I was 16. I think I built 6 van kits.
Another awesome review good buddy!!! I love this kit!!! It is indeed a "detailers wet dream" lol!!! kutgw
Something that is kind of unusual on the parts tree. Next to the camshaft, looks like a welding nozzle.
did u make this one? its the new version of the 1/20 scale "visable van" . i have both not completed yet tho
Smokey the Bear says "Only you can prevent van fires"...
Kool! A detailers dream - but why the odd 1/20 scale?
Lindberg and MPC tried to make 1/20 a thing for a while.
Did you do a build video on this yet ?
Nope, this was way back when I was doing mostly unboxings.
Nope, never built this bad boy. If they reissue it again I will.
@@hpiguy I hope they issue one of the other vans I saw from the same time frame too.
where did you find the highjacket van and do you know if is still available
No idea if it's still being made but I bought this one from Tower Hobbies.
The valve covers show me that its a Windsor based Small Block Ford.
can i purchase mpc 1/20 1974 ford highjacker at model round up thanks ; i
watch your vids all the time GREAT WORK
You'll have to check their site. Thanks!
when are you going to build the van and are going post it ???
If it does get built up it will have a video for sure.
I had the 3 in 1 of this. Wish I never sold it.
mine had no instructions for inner engine build
did u make this one yet
Hey um I need help on choosing a Paint color on my model 66 Chevy c10
You can google 1966 C10 paint colors and it will show you what was available back then.
Orange with a white top
Looks cool good ol Ford
Thanks!
For a relatively recent reissue, this sure is hard to find.
It came out three and a half years ago now. Video is from Jan 2015.
I'm guessing it was so popular that it sold out fast?
Probably. I'm just getting back into modeling, so I'm learning quick that if you want something you have to snatch it up right away. Wen u gonna build this van it is cool
fu manchu- king of the road
Got to get me one
Enjoy!
That's not a steering wheel on the chrome tree bud that's the horn ring look at the white steering wheel you will see where it mounts
Thanks for the info!
Did you build this
+Pete Andrews Not yet.
@@hpiguy it's been 3 years???????
It's a 68 ! I have it
Did you ever build this one. Id love to see it finished 😎👍
Not yet my man. 52 builds so far this year though.
definitely rockin the 351 cleveland
Electric Amish
Windsor block 302 or 351. (5.0L - 5.8L
) Cleveland block would be an ugly fit in the small van housing of the day.
I have an orginal one that has not been built. Stock van.
That's a vent for the stove
Thanks!
With all that detail they should've included a shower and toilet too lol
"Sh!tters full!"
@@hpiguy lol
Please make it
