In my experience Perkins, like Harleys, have a reputation for leaking oil. I own both. 80’s era in both cases, and they both leak a little oil. Old Harley guys say “ that’s just sweat from all the horsepower!”
That’s right! Following our first engine service after we bought Squalo the Perkins mechanic said “if they don’t leak oil, there is probably no oil in it, and THAT is a problem! “ lol To be honest with you, yes, little oil is fine..but the amount of oil this particular one loses.. is a different story altogether.
I agree it looks pretty rusty. And we will get a couple of those oil-absorber pads to prevent any oil getting into the main bilge and fouling the pump again.
Stop the motor. Get a clean cloth and wipe the underside of the motor to remove the oil. Get a mirror to help see below the engine. Start the motor and watch carefully. If there is an oil leak you should see it. Look for leaks that run down the SIDE of the engine. They are the most difficult to see. Keep checking the gearbox oil too.
When sucking out the engine oil, do not over-pump that device. I had one, and over-pumped it. I blew the valve on the top of it. Settle for about 15 pumps, and wait.
Hi Geoff, she is lovely. Under sail she performs very nicely, very comfortable as a live aboard. I suppose most centre cockpit yachts are great that way. Storage on it is great and the unusual addition of a port side “workshop” or whatever you want to turn it into is fantastic. I love the fact there js access to the engine from front, both sides as well as from the cockpit which means if you ever need to get it lifted out then it is should be an easy job. She is not the easiest to handle in tight spaces, depending on what you are used to, but with time we were more confident moving around a marina. But anyway in the future we plan to install bow thruster :) overall, she is well build. We met along the way a couple of owners of the same oyster, they wouldn’t change it for anything. Is the one you are looking at in a good condition? Well maintained? We noticed that there are some issues with teak deck, this might turn out to be a big job. Ours is secured with screws which hasn’t been maintained that well. Have you seen her for yourself or gauging condition based on photos? can be very misleading or taken a long time ago.
@@sailingsqualo Hi Nat, Thanks very much for your thoughts and impressions! It looks such a cool boat with a lot of character and well built as well. The one I've seen is on Yachtworld at the moment. It looks like she is in St Martin. I'm in Canada (originally from UK). I've only seen the pictures and info online. I've taken a sailing course here in Canada and am keen to take the leap, to a liveaboard, cruising lifestyle. I've been researching and planning for few years. I think the fear is taking that scary first leap into the partially unknown lol.
It is sailingveselsqualo@gmail.com , watch out for the different spelling of vessel with one ‘s’ :) perhaps that’s why it went wrong. If you still have issue I will look into it :) don’t ask why it’s with one ‘s’ 😁
cloths washing liquid good for washing engine and bilges at 40 deg , and biodegradable. lot cheaper and pleasant smelling than bilgex . we had oil in my 39 ,oil filters leaks , mostley try to get the wright and good makes for replacements , glass bolls on water traps on fuel filters good idea. we have 3 fuel tanks, but had one fuel filter in line to engine. we fitted in line, water trap fuel filters from port and star tanks that fed main tank under salon table , all tanks have on off taps . dirty fuel at pumps is a real hazard .it cost 1000.00 euros to fix our gen set , dew to dirty fuel, do you have hydrolic sterring if so has it a bypass for emergency sterring
Nice to see you out and under sail. So strange to see Ziggy smoking a cigarette!
Thank you :) she is such a pleasure to sail. Aaah, the cigarette.. what can I say... bleh ;) Nat

Looks very rusty around engine mounts , can you lay something under the engine to catch the oil,
Foil cooking tray , ?
I agree it looks pretty rusty.
And we will get a couple of those oil-absorber pads to prevent any oil getting into the main bilge and fouling the pump again.
How much did the boat cost ? And what material is the Hull made of ?
We paid £30k, made from fibreglass.
where is oil leaking from
Honestly, so many places it is hard to even make out where the problem was.
What engine model? I have the 4-154
It’s 4-236, 75hp

It is so hard to tell where the problem lies. The gearbox oil however is fine.

Good advice 👍thank you
Hi Guys! I'm looking at and ad for an Oyster 39 for sale. What are your thoughts on this boat?

I am curious what your plans are if you decide to buy her? Please tell us more :) best, Nat
