I just wish it were a bit more modernized and had finer unit controls. The inability to tell units to just stop firing at things, the inability to lock them in formations, the inability to tell them to hold ground and only fire at what's in range without chasing, no cover system for infantry, no ramming capability in space, no ship elevation control in space, capitals unable to spread fire to multiple targets/hardpoints(leading to a lot of wasted damage), and lack of real geometry blocking damage on hardpoints that aren't in line-of-sight of the attacker. Makes it frustrating to play a lot of times, where things that should work don't work because the antiquated game logic says no.

For the shields question the clone wars answered it, and one of the legends books. The one we're Luke first has an interaction with Mara when she tosses her blaster to him.
Ships would divert power away from the areas they were firing from, hence the forward and rear shielding and they couldn't be full strength at same time. Thrawn used dreadnoughts as shields todo so without having to power them up and down to then unleash flurry's of attacks.
We see some of this in clones wars, like when Anakin set Rex and clones on asteroids to ambush grievous fleet. Grievous had moved all shielding power to from deflectors to push through the asteroid field and couldn't transfer them back fast enough or power them off to attack. And Ray shields blocked everything including physical objects, Anakin shot the generators to land on invisible hand, but ships didn't use those for outside defense and that's why things flew through unless energy based.

    • @truetorkerproductions9352
      @truetorkerproductions9352 2 месяца назад +2

Also deflector shields which were used additionally that were quicker to power up and down also couldn't take as much of a beating, especially from heavy onslaughts. That's why the Deflector shields always seem to be down or failing.
You can also see the difference in the shield being used as standards create ripples from impacts but deflectors look more like just flashes.

Then when Clone Wars started (10 years old) I was so unbelievably hyped as the show went on and got more mature because I thought there was a real, serious chance that they could make an episode about the origin of the Katana Fleet. Gathering the ships, setting up the remote control system (there's no way they could call it Slave Circuits), and it's ultimate disappearance. I'm still slightly bummed that never happened

I'm currently writing a SW fanfic and I made a modified version of the Dreadnought Class Heavy Cruiser the main hero's flagship. It really is such a great design with so much potential!
Edit: lol, that shielding and hyperspace discussion is so on point... It's so hard to get any consistency there!
Even the naming (ray vs particle) seems mismatched thanks to ep3 making a mistake and calling a particle shield a ray shield, while in ep4 an energy shield was correctly called a ray shield... hence why the rebels had to use physical projectiles (proton torpedoes) to destroy the death star.
I've advised another fanfic author on shielding tech and I'm honestly quite proud of how well it turned out. We figured out realistic limitations that made sense and made for an arguably incredibly cool and fun scene that dynamically evolved from the strengths and weakness of shielding tech rather than being written for the sake of plot convenience. If anyone's interested, check out The Sith Empress by FractionalSith, I think his story is a lot better than my own.

When I was running the Fantasy Flight Games (now Edge Studio) Star Wars RPG I ran into the problem of what happens to a ship that jumps into hyperspace too close to a planet. I gave a guaranteed damage value to my players that their ship would suffer depending on how close they were to the planet. I justified it saying that the ship would be tearing itself apart between the gravity of the planet and the pull (or equal and opposite gravity) of hyperspace.

The fact that the dreadnought cruiser is so underutilized is heartbreaking for me, because it is my go-to cruiser in Empire at War in every mod I find it (usually Awakening of the Rebellion or Thrawn's Revenge.) It's so versatile and makes for a fantastic frontline vessel in early games when you don't have a lot of credits to throw at proper star destroyers, and is still usable in picket fleets during the mid to late game.

  • @violetlight1548

I quite like the Dreadnaught cruisers, and use them extensively in my Empire of the Hand stories. Basically, in my fanfiction, most of the portion of the Katana Fleet that Thrawn captured remained with Pellaeon's forces -- what would become the Imperial Remnant later on. However, Thrawn did manage to send 30 of the Katana Fleet dreadnaughts home to the Empire of the Hand. 5 of them, which were in bad shape, were "scrapped" (actually used in the black ops mission that the Rogue Phalanx, led by Thrawn's wife Xelarra, then-governor of Nirauan, launched against Honoghr about 2 years after Bilbringi). Later on, when Xelarra becomes Empress of the Hand, she takes one of the remaining Katana Fleet dreadnaughts, the HMS Rapier, as her personal transport, saying she has an appreciation of such ships, and that Star Destroyers should be saved for actual military service, not taxiing around officials (showing by example that she is a far different kind of monarch from Palpatine).

My basic stance on Star Wars Shields always follows the example of the gungan example: Stuff with a lot of energy gets blocked, stuff with little energy passes through.
Based on that I think that all shields in Star Wars are based on the same technology, from those that keep turbolaser fire away to those that keep the air in the hangar.
The fire from the ship itself is probably let through by adjusting the shields in specific points which are synced to the guns.

    @Cobra1098 2 месяца назад +32

I don't know why but Star Wars: Rebels seemed to have quite a few characters, ships and other elements that had me thinking, "Was that a complete waste?" and kept me from liking it as much as Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
There were the Dreadnoughts as you discussed in the video, but there was also:
B-Wings: The Rebels got their hands on a B-Wing prototype. Not only was this years before A New Hope, but the PROTOTYPE had a super laser that gave Hera the ability to destroy entire Star Destroyers. The B-Wing subsequently disappeared from the show, and this game-changing ability was never seen again in other expanded materials (as far as I know) or in Return of the Jedi.
TIE Defender: It was a fan-favorite ship from the Expanded Universe, and once again is appearing years before A New Hope. And yet, instead of being a heavily-armed killer piloted by the best of the best (or most suicidal/lucky) pilots in the Imperial Navy, the TIE Defender ended up coming and going without having any impact on the Galactic Civil War, let alone on a single Rebel cell operating on a backwater planet.
Thrawn: Thrawn was another fan favorite character, and even though he had a few small wins, he ultimately got hyperspace-whaled into the Unknown Regions. Obviously "Ahsoka" came along many (many) years later and revealed Thrawn's ultimate fate, but Thrawn, the greatest military mind in the Empire, failed to stop a single Rebel cell on a backwater planet, and played little to no part in the Galactic Civil War. At least the Expanded Universe established that Thrawn was busy dealing with things during the events of the movies, and basically took over in the "Heir to the Empire" novels because there was no one left who was capable of running the Empire.
Bendu: Neither Light or Dark, we see an alien species we've never seen before with powers unlike anything we'd seen (at least in the Disney continue) up to that point, and even though he promotes himself as "the one in the middle" instead of aligning with Light or Dark, and he basically comes and goes. He doesn't inspire any characters or events, and Kanan basically just calls him out for not taking a stand. His name is also a reference to some of George Lucas' earliest notes on the Force and the Jedi (Jedi-Bendu), which makes it weird that the character proves to be totally inconsequential.
The World Between Worlds: So we have a secret Jedi temple on Lothal, and this temple has a way to access a dimension that allows you to change time itself, and yet it was basically pointless except for being used to save Ahsoka (and then appearing in "Ahsoka" many, many years later). How the hell could the Jedi have forgotten they had the ability to access this realm at the temple? And if they didn't forget, how did not one Jedi decide to never use the Space Between Spaces to stop Order 66, or the Clone Wars, or Emperor Palpatine? Not one Jedi was tempted to try that, really? And if the Emperor got word that it was there, why the hell did he only send one assassin to take a look? Why not send a fleet and just secure the temple and everything around it for miles? Just treat it like the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone or something, or just remove the planet's population - this is an evil empire, and Palpatine believes he has the possibility to control time and space. Even after the temple collapses and is seemingly destroyed, why doesn't the Empire go there and try excavating it? Instead, Palpatine apparently moved on and never once tried to go back to revisit this possibility. That, to me, was probably the worst example I remember from Rebels.
Mandalore: I did somewhat enjoy Sabine's story arc, but it seems weird that the Mandalorian clans were essentially united against the Empire, and yet we never see a single Mandalorian serving with the Rebels in the films. I know the show came years after the Original Trilogy, but why make a single planet/society so important to the early Rebellion, when there's no way for you to retroactively add them to the movies.
There were probably other things that I forgot, but I remember Rebels seemed to introduce so many things that would not only be extremely important, but potentially war-winning for either the Empire or Rebellion, especially considering the show was set during the relatively early years of the Galactic Civil War and the Rebellion, and yet none of these things mattered.
I don't know how Filoni and crew went from the story arcs we saw in The Clone Wars to these recurring issues with Rebels. I know Rebels supposedly had a smaller animation budget than The Clone Wars, but I don't know if that would have a significant impact on the stories themselves.

      to debunk your points:
      A) they probably took a while to develop the b wing from a prototype into an actual, factory made starfighter. also, there's a reason the laser never comes back: it only takes out a cruiser and kinda busts some of the power systems of the blade wing (notably the hyperdrive)
      B) tarkin happened lol, he had a habit of taking over projects, then gutting them and transferring the funds to project stardust
      C) fair lol
      D) he wants to NOT be part of the wars, (hence the one in the middle) that's why he never showed up before and never shows up again.
      E) messing with the space-time continuum is a really bad idea, also lothal has resources besides the gateway to all of time and space

So many different authors definitely didn't help with inconsistencies. I listened to the Outbound Flight audiobook recently and the way Timothy Zahn had Thrawn fascinated by droideka lead to some great explanations behind shielding. He wrote it so that those shields had polarity, which allowed blaster fire to pass through from inside, but he reversed it so that blaster fire from within the shield would ricochet.

I assume the Republic would have also introduced a lot more droid automation to reduce the ISD's humongous crew requirements similar to the Dreadnoughts. In some ways what really limited the New Republics navy wasnt the capital cost of the ships, there were a lot just lying around and for the first 15 years or so they were mainly recommissioning mothballed ships rather than building fresh designs for the bulk of their fleet whenever it needed strengthening such as after a big defeat or a long period of relative peace, it was the upkeep and crewing of a large standing navy. (in fact they seemed to mostly be commissioning high tech new capital ship designs in times of peace not conflict)

I think the most important aspect of the Dreadnought is that it created a sense of technological improvement over time. The Dreadnoughts were manpower intensive and under gunned compared to the later Victory-class. The Imperial-class not only solved the lackluster engines of the Victory, but also improved upon shielding, size, and firepower at the expense of atmospheric flight.
Of course, all this changed with Disney. I'd love to see an animated Victory.

The Dreadnought class might be my all time favorite starship of any kind, I REALLY wish they used it more.
I personally HATE the inconsistencies with how things work in the universe, especially hyperspace. I loathe the scene in TFA when they were able to bypass the shield, imo it adds a HUGE plothole in that how the HELL is some random, admittedly skilled pilot able to SUCCESSFULLY revert inside the shield, seemingly WELL within the atmosphere and not end up a smoking crater? If a damn HUMAN is capable of it, how has NOBODY thought to program a droid to be able to do the same, or why can't Jedi or other species with super-human levels of reaction/awareness, whatever able to do it, rendering planetary shields VERY poor for defense when all it takes is some random group with no real ship maintenance facilities and like an hour to do it.
I honestly could respect it had they bothered to give us just a short montage of them working on the Falcon, and the mention that it's SUPER risky, and that they'd need to disable that safety feature in the hyperdrive, even if it still leaves a wider strategic hole in shielding but at least they'd have shown fans the courtesy of outlining the stakes, in turn ramping up the thrill factor for that section of the movie. Sure we obviously know they're gonna succeed, but properly setting the stakes is a staple of this sort of daredevil crap.
It also bugged the hell out of me when the TIEs were able to follow the Falcon at the start of TRoS, and they made up "lightspeed skipping" when all they needed to do was mention that Poe had programed an escape route into the hyperdrive incase things went badly. Not to mention the absolute batshittery that was putting a clock on that movie, only to have Rey visit like 8 planets in less than 16 hours, absolutely shattering the ambiguous time hyperspace travel takes, which is should be abit flexible for writers to utilize, and until then had been a FAR slower thing when it was quantified.

@EckhartsLadder I've assumed that for example with an ISD - The particle shield is very close or on the hull as many times ships fly close to hull without being destroyed and are able to get in range of the shield generators this way.
I presume the bubble shield projected around the star destroyer (and other capital ships in the video) is the ray (anti blaster/laser) shield as ships can fly under this without being destroyed. Furthermore the shield doesn't seem to have to be disabled to make use of torpedoes/missiles/physical projectiles on some ships.
Please could you confirm whether this information is true in terms of making sense of flaws/inconsistencies that writers don't think about. It would make sense how fighters could leave the capital ship while ray shield stays on, but particle shield is temporarily disabled during dispatch.

The Falcon in the sequel trilogy is a really good example I think of the plot ignoring hyperspace rules. They jump to escape the Death Star blast while still inside the planet's atmosphere, which would obviously be inside the gravity well. A huge part of Legends plots, especially the X-Wing novels, revolve around getting out of a grav well to make a jump. That really hurt the sequels for me.

I've often thought about how Star Wars shields would work when firing through your own shields, be they energy or matter weapons, might work. An example might be that the R2 unit on a starfighter might intermittently drop the shields to allow the pilot to shoot through them, whereas, TIE fighters don't have shields, so there is nothing to try to shoot through. Frequency modulation is a Star Trek thing, and highly unlikely to effect plasma based blaster weapons. As a young Sci-Fi nerd, I hypothesized that the reasons while the Millennium Falcon, the Rebel Starfighters, and larger capital ships even had the ability to use a hyperdrive was because they also had shields. Those shields would protect them from encountering space dust which, traveling at those speeds would be catastrophic, and since TIE's didn't have shields, they would be unable to utilize a hyperdrive.
Because I dabble still in the Star Wars legends realm, I am in the process of developing my own layout of a star ship, based on the YT2400 (So, like Dash Rendar's Outrider), but very different, because this ship is less of a freighter and more like a gunship. The designer of the Spectre is former Sienar Fleets Special Projects Lead Engineer Reed Hanley. He is one of the people responsible for the Stygium Cloaking devices on TIE Phantoms. He was overly ambitious as an engineer, and an ace TIE fighter pilot, often testing out the TIE Phantoms himself. In an attack on the facility made by the Rebellion, the heads of the Research and Development wing rigged an explosion meant to kill Hanley, but several rebel commandoes rescued him, but led to about as much cybernetics as what Darth Vader had. After being made functional, Reed redesigned the chassis of his new implants and artificial limbs to turn him into a soldier. The Spectre, a CEC YT2407BTX craft (The BTX model has a secondary cockpit arm with a turret on it, rather than another cockpit) Features a reinforced bulkhead support systems, an enlarged cockpit section, and a TIE Bomber weapons pod to the left of the cockpit (arranged pretty much like a TIE Bomber), an extended range Ion cannon on the outrigger pod on the left, and a similar TIE bomber looking pod next to the Ion Cannon that contains the power core, and a lot more hexagonal geometry. The engines it runs on are similar in layout to a Star Destroyer's 3 main engines, and then 4 Twin Ion Engines aligned like hte 4 smaller engines. and Reed Hanley even mentioned taking a few design cues from the ISD line. The back ends of the weapons pod and the cockpit are equipped with rear facing Quad Laser turrets, exactly like what you would find on the dorsal and ventral mounted YT1300 line, but the two turrets are Reed's Reaper engineering phase linked autoblasters. These guns are similar to the guns found on the belly section of Jango Fett's Slave I, except that instead of two of them there is 6 of them, 3 on each side, and they fire 120 degrees out of phase to facilitate an autocannon function. These guns have their own power generator separate from the ship's systems, though the computer can tap into the weapons system's power in the event of an emergency. And of course, to top off this technological terror, it is also equipped with a cloaking device (the reason for the 4 TIE engines is to propel the ship in cloak, and not be discovered) The ship can be flown by a single pilot, though 2 are preferred, but even the front of the Cockpit is equipped with heavy lasers identical to the ones found on the TIE Experimental, the one flown by Darth Vader himself.
This ship is the first one I ever got to thinking "how would I want the shields functioning with this thing?" I mean, this is a ship created outside of the Star Wars licensing, was I going to have the ship drop shields when firing?? When firing that ion cannon, would shields even work?? Well, I think I figured out something pertaining to shields. In Empire Strikes back, as the Millennium Falcon is clearing the asteroid field, while being tailed by Captain Needar's Star Destroyer, The Falcon is struck by a turbolaser and C3PO mentions that the rear deflector has been lost. Han orders Chewie to divert all power to the front deflector screen and positions to attack the Star Destroyer. Needar orders shields up. That tells me Needar's Star Destroyer was running with shields down. That would make sense. Maybe you don't run with shields up when you have your weapons systems charging up, because firing through your own shields won't work. That said, firing proton Torpedoes or ion torpedoes is something that could be done with ray shields up, only.

Shields and turbo lasers. My understanding is the shields would flicker for a micro second to let the shot pass and shields re-engage blocking incoming fire. If the enemy's fire timed correctly, it could pass thru just as outgoing fire exited, there byable to score direct hits. (Old biplane machine guns were on timers to be able to fire thru the propeller without hitting the propeller).
Hyperspace, ships had safeties the sensed gravity wells and would automatically disengage the engines to prevent flying into a sun or planet. Very skilled or stupid pilots would turn off these safeties to bypass blockades. In Force Awakening, Han did this to be able to get into Starkiller's atmosphere without being noticed.

The hyperspace limitations inconsistency in the new trilogies really bugged me. The falcon should not of been able to warp within planetary orbits and the empire suddenly tracking starships through hyperspace (another dimension) were just lazy plot points. With the shields maybe the computers momentarily switch of that portion in the milliseconds that it takes to fire a laser and then reactivates or opens a hole only large enough for the laser or torpedo to exit but I agree flying through shields seemed silly.

You just got to utilize it right! Hell, the Dreadnought-Class Heavy Cruiser has BETTER point-defenses than an ISD and if you bring 4-6 of these (especially with Katana-Fleet style automation), you can fight an ISD openly (especially since you have more fighters on board - not that the Rebells wouldn't arrive with fighters deployed, they have independet hyperdrives, something a Tie-Fighter lacks...unless it's Vader's fighter or a Tie-Defender or one of those Ties with a cloaking device or a Clutch (basically a Tie-Ugly, but a good one!))...one of my favourite characters, Garm Bel-Iblis (former senator of Corellia!) - nicknamed PEREGRIN (just like he named his Flagship!) - uses several dreadnought's in his own Rebell-Cell :)
