    India and China have reached an agreement regarding border tensions in Ladakh, particularly following clashes since early 2020. This arrangement involves separating patrols and verifying the removal of structures by both sides. However, confusion remains about the specifics of new or existing buffer zones and whether similar agreements have been made in other regions, like Yangtze. In Episode 1543 of #CutTheClutter, Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta and Defence Editor Snehesh Alex Philip discuss the new arrangements around LAC, the 1959 claim line debate, and more.

    Thanks to Trudeau's expert diplomacy, India is fast-tracking its border settlement with China. With that out of the way, India has a clear shot at a permanent seat on the UNSC-especially with the U.S., U.K., and France cheering from the sidelines.
    In 1960, Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai proposed a compromise to resolve the India-China border dispute, suggesting that China would recognize India's claim to the eastern sector (Arunachal Pradesh) if India acknowledged Chinese control over Aksai Chin in the western sector. This "package deal" aimed to settle the boundary by dividing the contested areas between the two countries, with China prioritizing Aksai Chin for its strategic link between Tibet and Xinjiang. However, Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru rejected the proposal, as he was unwilling to return any territory gained by lines drawn by its former colonial master.
    The U.S. maintained its embargo on China during the Great Chinese Famine (1959-1961) discouraging other nations from sending food, while millions died of starvation.
    Confident that China is weakened and will collapse, India implemented its "Forward Policy", expecting a weak Chinese response.
    If this border issue had been resolved in 1960, the past 64 years of mutual suspicion and distrust might have been avoided.
    Anywhere in the world, if there is a border dispute, it is usually the result of a line drawn by an Englishman; if it is an internal dispute, it is usually the US fueling it with diplomatic, financial, covert, and military support. Difference in implementation of divide and conquer strategy.

    The deal means that India can smile at China, and China can smile back. India did not get much out of the West for being a vanguard against China. So, now India changes position and swings its legs to the Russia/China camp.
    From China's perspective, as long as India does not side with the West completely, it is GOOD ENOUGH. So, it smiles back to India. In fact, everybody smiles to India because they all know India will forever sit on the fence, swinging its legs back and forth from US/EU camp to Russia/China camp. They don't mind giving India some breadcrumbs to keep swinging. India obviously does not mind swinging for some breadcrumbs. India only needs the PERCEPTION that it is moving in time. It does not care where and how it is moving. From India's perspective, MOVING is both the mean and the end. It could move FOREVER. Time has very little meaning to India.

It has to depend on other nations which falls under the influences of both the camps you mentioned and this is why India is not able to choose with conviction. It's very risky and can prove to be catastrophic especially with the West and the Chinese keeping Pakistan alive to keep India under check. The moment India makes a move that shows conviction and sligh aggression , they will use Pakistan and support preposterous claims by Pakistan. So there are multiple reasons for Indians behavior and hope world would take note of that and not look at the issue with a one dimensional view. Hopefully things will change in the future.

    Thanks. In a future episode on this subject, you may wish to discuss the Johnson-Ardagh and the McDonald-McCartney lines on Aksai Chin. The Published Indian maps of today use the Johnson-Ardagh Line (roughly the Kunlun range) as the claimed border. The McDonald-McCartney line is interesting- while it tracks east of the Karakorums in parts, it also bisects Aksai Chin in a north-south fashion through the Laktsang Range north of the Lingzi Tang plains and salt flats. The Chinese 1959 Claim line roughly pushes India to the Karokorums, as opposed to Kunlun. An animated graphic that shows how the Lines have moved steadily westwards would help provide a visual aid to understanding the history.

    • @lagrangewei
      @lagrangewei 23 дня назад

      India can barely access Karakorum, to suggest India can control up to Kunlun is pure dellusion since it is geographically so isolated from India. India access to Karakorum is literlaly just the Karakorum highway, there is no alternate road into that valley. the LAC is where it is because that is the extend to which India can control. all those lines are pointless because they are logistically impossible to support. so what is the point of talking about lines that only exist in theory and can't be realised physically?

    • @prabuddhaghosh7022
      @prabuddhaghosh7022 21 день назад

      India and China should get together and make a border commision and settle the border in a civil manner with give and take. India's only reason for holding on to DBO is to protect Karakoram pass but the pass is useless if China keeps the otherside closed. India should negotiate for 20 kms east of the DBO to Leh road and give the rest of Aksai Chin to China. China needs Aksai Chin to protect the Xinjiang Tibet road and even giving up 20 kms that road is safe. In return for this, in other areas India and China should agree to a border along the watershed, then withdraw down to 5000 feet on both sides and agree for all areas above 5000 feet to be off-limits to military. Will make life easier for soldiers. Another condition from Indian side for giving up claims to Aksai Chin should be a 100 year renewable lease on the Kailash Mansarovar area. That area is of much more sentimental value to Indians than Aksai Chin which is uninhabitable.
      Also with borders being settled Trade with Tibet and Xinjiang should be opened up via the passes. Preindependence there was active trade through these passes. We can even bring a Russia to India oil pipeline through Karakoram if this area becomes settled.

    • @VijayBalan-x4z
      @VijayBalan-x4z 21 день назад

      @@lagrangewei , no reason to talk about it other than understanding history...to know what various thoughts were as we got to where we are. Not at all suggesting any of those lines are achievable or even desirable today given the ground situation. For historians, an interesting question is why Johnson-Ardagh proposed that line, or McDonald-McCartney chose the north-south division of Aksai Chin. The Why question is instructive, like why MacMahon drew his line (and the other more intriguing blue and red lines in the 1914 Simla agreement- inner and outer Tibet), or even why the hapless Radcliffe drew his lines as such. Why talk about them? Paraphrasing what someone said about going to the moon- because they are there.

    2020 Chinese invasion had roots in 2019 moves by India in Ladakh . Home Minister Amit Shah declared in the Lok Sabha that Aksai Chin was also Indian territory.
    "Article 370 gave India only a limited say in the affairs of Jammu and Kashmir , including Ladakh , which suited both China and Pakistan .
    China was always a player in the so called Kashmir dispute overtly only between India and Pakistan. China wanted Ladakh to link up with Pakistan and Shaksgam valley . State Govt of Jammu and Kashmir , including Ladakh , was sympathetic to Pakistan ‘s and ultimately to China ‘s interests , especially , in Ladakh. Example Late Sheikh Abdullah refused to allow His Holiness The Dalai Lama and his followers to settle in Ladakh when they took refuge in India . Ladakh was most suitable for Tibetans both from climate and cultural points of views.
    India ‘s direct control over both Kashmir and Ladakh has put an end to the China - Pakistani collusion .

    it does not make sense to claim India and China is withdrawing 20km behind their claim line because India is clearly not 20km from where they claim their border is. this is why you have to use very precise language. India withdraw it is 20km from LAC, NOT the claim line. if you look at google earth, China had control of the so call "China claim line" while before the dispute. the claim line is virtually identical to the current LAC. which Modi accepted as part of his diplomacy before his visit to China in chengdu. so China has a very good claim that they are the status quo because of Modi acceptance (which is why he said there is no Chinese troop in Indian territory) as well as their historical control.
    India really should just accept the LAC as the border rather then to continue to push for control, because the issue India faces is Despang geographically is not part of India, only a valley connect Despang to India, so if that valley is made unusable, that entire area is cut off from India. so India sensitivity is entire because the geography does not favor India, it rather the LAC not be where it is, but the historical fact is the LAC is where it is. if we do the math, 20km from the LAC, mean the India side will end up on the "China claim line". effectively ending where China wanted it to be. so is there really a point for India to not just accept the LAC as border? because that would actually gave India more control amd buffer than trying to fight over where the line is and force to disengage and ending back at square one.
    the narrative in Indian media and what we can see on google earth timeline that show old road just doesn't sell me the idea that India was ever going to be in control of what they are disputing. the geography is stacked against India. it is better to seek a natural border.

    The China-India border is a complicated matter indeed, if anyone has patience to read the history books about it.
    Both sides tell the same story: you took my land.
    The reality is that the border was drawn by Great Britain when GB colonzied India and also half colonized China( it took Hongkong from China).
    Now China and India have to solve the problems left by GB, which is not easy.
    If no agreement, at least be able to keep the peace.
    The LAC deal is a small but important step to keep the peace.

    as per game theory elements : China stand to gain more from the disengagement announcements as they get time to improve their influence in Nepal, Bhutan and Myanmar; focus on the challenge in their stagnating Economy : simply Beijing make Delhi believe that they are stepping away from confrontation... unlike plains with Pakistan the mountain territory in Himalayas can always be reoccupied by adversary and the status be brought back to confrontation mode ... India missed opportunity to settle the dispute back in 1959 and now none of the nations politicians have capital to settle the dispute - its only a war which can settle it now ...

    Nonsense, they acted out of opportunitism due to covid19. They also wanted to use kashmirs constitutional changes indirectly and claim that constituted as 'changes'. Furthermore, this is part of their long term strategy, they come at their own time, take a swat of land, hold for a while, something they never really wanted, then give it back after a while when they wanted. But if they had got it... then that's more real estate if india was too intimidated to react.
    So india being a small power will be happy to get back something they always owned... and the Chinese never wanted.
    Indians are happy... to get back their patrolling rights, something they already had... not actual tangible property.... but just patrolling. This is pathetic.
    At least india has demonstrated it can push china back. And that these areas are disputed. In future negotiations this pull back can be used as evidence of chinese acknowledgement of indian claims.

    The problem with India is the military capability and ability. The real and serious Indian army modernization started about less than two decades ago. The China air, navy and ground forces are well ahead of the Indian military and PM Modi knows that reality well. He knows that this is not a right time to challenge the China. So his main goal goal is to avoid the direct military confrontation for some time and continue work with the Indian army and improve the India economy first. Unnecessary creating confrontation will hurt India more. Many time Indian medias are spreading wrong information to excite the Indian population who are not ready to pay the honest taxes or even not ready to serve in Indian army but love to fill good mentally which is more dangerous. War needs money and in war people die, so do not start war until the nation citizens are ready to sacrifice wealth and lives!!!!

      The Indian army is the worst army among all China's opponents. China's war of resistance against Japan lasted 14 years, the Chinese civil war lasted 4 years, the Korean War lasted 3 years, China's self-defense counterattack against Vietnam lasted 2 months, and China's border war with Vietnam lasted 10 years. India's understanding of "war" is too narrow. We Chinese believe that India has never experienced a real war. In 1962, in the eyes of the Chinese, it was not a war, it was just an armed conflict between China and India. In 1962, the short armed conflict of only 32 days continued India's nightmare for decades. What makes the Chinese feel funny is that a border conflict has turned India into a "Battle for the Defense of the Capital of New Delhi".

      I hope Indians will read it carefully and experience it with their hearts. The huge difference in the founding of China and India is destined to be the biggest difference between India and China. Just look at the modern history of the two countries and you will understand. India was colonized by Britain for more than 200 years. In 1947, Britain experienced World War II, its strength declined greatly, and its status was replaced by the United States. India took the opportunity to gain independence through "non-violent non-cooperation". In other words, India's independence has not experienced the test of blood and fire. Such an independent country has no cohesion and willpower, and no national identity. Now let's talk about China. Since 1840, the Chinese people have been living in dire straits. Various disasters and wars have followed one after another. At that time, China was very poor and backward, and suffered all kinds of humiliation. Including the cession of Hong Kong and Macau, Taiwan became a Japanese colony, the burning of the Old Summer Palace by the Eight-Power Allied Forces, and the subsequent comprehensive and brutal invasion of China by Japan. In 1931, Japan launched a full-scale invasion war against China. From 1931 to 1945, the war lasted for 14 years. The Chinese army and civilians rose up to resist, fought bloody battles for 14 years, and suffered 30 million casualties, but finally won. Do you know why China suffered so many casualties? There are hundreds of reasons. I will only give an example of one phenomenon: when the Chinese troops encountered the Japanese army, it was often the case that if the number of Chinese soldiers participating in the war was 100, the Chinese soldiers only had 20 to 30 guns. The remaining soldiers would not give up resistance or surrender. They used machetes, steel forks, and wooden sticks to bravely fight against the machine guns and cannons in the hands of the Japanese army until they died. This spirit of facing death and never retreating is the Chinese spirit. 30 million casualties! Do you think this can happen in India? For India, it is zero casualties, because India's knees are soft. India will soon give up resistance.
