Hey Schapenkop, I am also from Dordrecht and living in Thailand. I totally agree with you regarding paardenworst. I miss it so much. It is hard to explain to people who never tasted it before. I used to work in the EDAH in Wielwijk (myself from Crabbenhof) and we had a family “paarden slagerij” delivering their homemade paardenworst. I thought they were one of the best ones in Dordrecht. Always nice to have a “broodje paardenworst” (horse saugace on bread for the English speakers). Groetjes vanuit Phuket, Thailand!

From the food moral minority, all the things you present as a Dutch food experience are a bit sad. Run each of them by a dietitian, and tell me what the nutritional value is. My prejudice is, between not so good and really bad. A lot was Dutch cheap calories to people who had to do physical labour. I'm not looking down on that. There's a lot of pain in there. People needed cheap calories for physically hard work, but they would become a problem if they grew old and remained healthy. And the taste palette - meh. Toddlers like fat, protein, sweet. That's about it. Why not take each other out to a classy restaurant. Here's a list of ones I recommend: De Lindehof Nuenen Noord-Brabant Fred Rotterdam Zuid-Holland De Kromme Watergang Hoofdplaat Zeeland Parkheuvel Rotterdam Zuid-Holland De Treeswijkhoeve Waalre Noord-Brabant De Bokkedoorns Overveen Noord-Holland Meliefste Wolphaartsdijk Zeeland François Geurds Rotterdam Zuid-Holland (RestaurantName Tweon/Village Province) I ranked them top-down based on a personal blended rating from Michelin, Gault Millau, and Lekker. The absolute top (Michelin/Lekker) is not included. If you need to go cheaper than my hand picked selection, then note that the Top 100 in Lekker (annual) magazine is at a good to great level, the Top 50 generally excellent, and any restaurant not in the Top 100 probably is as expensive as the Lekker 51-100, but less good. At the top of my selection you find a fusion style between old Dutch colonies and French Haute Cuisine. Generally, in each of these there's a Dutch variant of French. Note that the Dutch upper middle and upper classes, at home, used to have meals based on French Haute Cuisine, or if they kept it simple, on La Cuisine de ma Tante Marie (Aunt Marie's Kitchen - simplified everyday French Housewife Escoffier). Italy has its precursor to these cookbooks in Pellegrino Artusi's book "La Scienza in cucina e l’Arte di mangiar bene" that is generally translated as "Science in the Kitchen and the Art of Eating Well" but I would translate as "Knowledge of our Cuisine and the Art of Eating Well". Escoffier wrote his cookbook after reading Artusi. Several of these on my list could be a day trip (or a day more). Nuenen village is known for the Van Gogh family. Zeeland in general has Dutch Delta Works landmarks - the province's motto: "Luctor et Emergo" - I struggle and/but Emerge (will not drown) you can see here. The Overveen address is on the border of one out of a bunch of Dutch nature reserves - Dutch scale - in a biotope called "dunes". The words "bison" and "buffalo" originate from Europe and thousands of years ago. There's a small section with "wisent" - European forest bison that look like the bison in the US, except not overweight ;). Also, Overveen is near Bloemendaal aan Zee with a couple more or less known beach joints. And next to Haarlem, where you may have been but probably missed a lot of in-depth stories.
Ehhhhh......from Cincinnati straight to Dordrecht ???? What happened to Rotterdam ? 😉😉.
Using syrup in a Dutch pancake restaurant is less controversial than not using syrup. Oh and my mother used the leftover mesh to bake it and put it on a leaf of bread with a bit of salt and pepper.
Does your guide also have a section on good reasons NOT to move to Netherlands? Whether it's struggles people should keep in mind, or bad reasons people might think were good reasons to move there in the first place? I think that would be immensely helpful in deciding if Netherlands is the right place for any given person.
the first one yes (struggles to keep in mind and expectations around specific challenges like the cost of moving and the housing shortage). we did talk about doing the second one, but it’s such a complicated decision for most people, ya know?
Deco idea: Look for high resolution pictures of historic Dordrecht. Ask a local theatre if they are willing to let go of some posters from previous shows (or if they can put some away for you). and probably a bit kitsch or campy, but the old "Aap Noot Mies" posters from Dutch preschools are pretty neat too. :) and a protip for cutting sausage with hard casings with any knife; poke it with a fork, then cut where the holes are. ;)
If you ever need to hang up something without damaging your wall, the "klevende spijkers" from Tesa might be worth checking out. Apart from that, great video as always. 😉
Let nobody tell you "How to eat a pancake" in a pancake restaurant. Those pancakes are way bigger and elaborate than those we eat at home. Yeah... homemade pancakes tend to be rolled up and eaten using your hands. In a restaurant... not so much. I don't know your taste of course but if birds and flowers and such are your thing, might I suggest posters with drawings by Marjolein Bastin? Another awsome Dutch artist was Anton Pieck (who you might have heard of as designer of de Efteling). For more modern Dutch artists you might look into Sam Drukker, Erwin Olaf, Astrid Outheusden or Alice Brasser. Congrats on passing A2.
It’s got to be paardenworst. Wait for it…and yes it is. I love it. Just cold as a snack. And i love spekpannenkoeken. My mom still makes them for me. I’m 43 🤭😂
Yes! Pancakes with bacon, cheese and sirup. Jealous. Love the posters. Live in the netherlands but have never had your pizza baguette. But I don’t like Brussels sprouts. It is something common in the Netherlands but, I hate them so much that when it was for dinner, as a kid, my parents Made me eat as much of them as the age I had at the time.
@@bunchartedhaha true, I don’t think many kids like them. And with adults it is either you hate them or you love them. But I think they are pretty healthy so its just a plus that you already liked them as a kid. I love your videos so i’m looking forward to see more of your content. Greetings from Drenthe.
I hate hutspot tbh. However, for any Dutch stamppot (I happen to love Boerenkool).. if you want to mash it, I recommend taking the pot off the fire for a bit to save your induction plate (I assume that you cook electric by the looks of things) mashing it with the pot on the counter (perhaps with a cloth under it if the pan is hot), then you get to mash it a lot more violently (which is fun, IMO) :-D
If you're gonna eat hutspot, please do it the right way. Fry some chopped onion with garlic and sambal, and mash it through the cooked patatoes and carrots (cook these together in bouillon) until everything is unrecognizable. For the true Leiden experience, combine with stew (stoofvlees). Tradition prescribes even mashing the stew through it all, but i like mine on the side. My go to recipee is the one using riblappen, Guinness beer and ontbijtkoek with mustard. Start at least six hours before dinner though. Good luck making this a few times a month.
frame it and use Tesa removable hooks (at hardware store like Gamma or Praxis) looks way nicer when it is framed. You can use cheap frames from the Action ;-)
Pannenkoek with spek is just the best with stroop! The cat poster looks adorable! Spruitjes on a baguette pizza,,, mmhhh might need to try that! Spruitjes aren't my fave thing to eat, but it sounds intriguing! Let me join you on the Dutch lessons haha. If the levels are the same as in school I didn't go higher than B2 .. While my English was C1/C2 and I am Dutch!!
My wife and I are planning on relocating to the Netherlands. Will definitely purchase the guide, being a seasoned expatriate, it helps to know the land you are immigrating to. 😅
I recently ate pannenkoeken with herring and onions and liked it. The pannenkoek slightly overpowered the herring taste I found (but not even more than when I eat it on a white bun, which is quite a common practice in this country) and I happen to really like the taste of Herring - which some people call strong, but I like the taste and aftertaste of herring I do eat them with onions, and I don't find that they overpower the typical herring taste - which I experience when I eat it by tale.
A lot of Dutch people use sirop (Pannenkoekensiroop) on their bacon and cheese pancakes, sometimes combined with mushrooms and onions. Savory pancakes and savory sweet combo pancakes are quite popular here in the Netherlands.

@@erikgoossens1 ik woon officieel nog op de Troelstraweg. Crabbenhof lol.
if you guys ever have the change to eat hutspot with Haché or zuurvlees or just a meatball i think guys will enjoy it
haha, dat kuiltje met jus. Zooo Nederlands. Daar kan geen visum of certificaat tegenop!
Good instinct on the syrup. Bacon pancake with syrup... bacon cheese with syrup. It just brings it home. With mushroom pancakes (champion) I like to sprinkle on some Maggi.
Controversial? That's how you're supposed to eat it!
For me ,hutspot or zuurkool with rookworst or a tartaartje and uitgebakken bacon .Na het bakken uitlekken ,afkoelen ,en dan kleine stukjes maken rn over de stamppot .lekker jusje erbij (van de tartaar) .
I see a lot af mayonaise.. but actually when ordering some fries on the streets, you will get Fritessaus, which is more sweet than the actual sour mayonaise
Its a really thick sweet and sour apple syrup or molasses ) ( When you first see it , it might look like some engine oil that has sat in an engine for 20 years , its that thick but its yummi ) Its also great on a cheese sandwich .
had a big laugh when you put the mayonnaise on your toothbrush...
Have you ever tried a serrated knife for bread? It is the next best thing to sliced bread 🙂
vroeg me opeens af: wat betekent buncharted eigenlijk? Waar komt de naam vandaan?
Your cat likes stroopwafels? 🤯
she has a sweet tooth 😻
Brussel sprouts on your pizza??? Eeeeeuuuwww.
10:57, right after he cleaned his butt with his tongue.
Here's a list of ones I recommend:
De Lindehof Nuenen Noord-Brabant
Fred Rotterdam Zuid-Holland
De Kromme Watergang Hoofdplaat Zeeland
Parkheuvel Rotterdam Zuid-Holland
De Treeswijkhoeve Waalre Noord-Brabant
De Bokkedoorns Overveen Noord-Holland
Meliefste Wolphaartsdijk Zeeland
François Geurds Rotterdam Zuid-Holland
(RestaurantName Tweon/Village Province)
I ranked them top-down based on a personal blended rating from Michelin, Gault Millau, and Lekker.
And next to Haarlem, where you may have been but probably missed a lot of in-depth stories.
you need a poster of a stroopwafel. And the dinner you made is something I do also 😄 but I like to use Turkisch bread
now we’re talking
Ehhhhh......from Cincinnati straight to Dordrecht ????
What happened to Rotterdam ? 😉😉.
haha we knew this would come up 😂
don’t worry, we already have a solution
Maybe you can compare dutch pancakes and american pancakes.
skipping all reels and shorts, not interesting
That's a long walk for pannenkoeken
Kuiltje... integration completed.
Using syrup in a Dutch pancake restaurant is less controversial than not using syrup. Oh and my mother used the leftover mesh to bake it and put it on a leaf of bread with a bit of salt and pepper.
I think it's called 'a slice of bread' but i like 'a leaf of bread' much better. Has a poetic feel to it.
Y'know I use that same toothpaste. :D
that zaanse mayo toothpaste made me need therapy :P
Have you ever considered taking a dog, probably not . But HEMA fans as you are you can buy a Takkie knuffel, to decorate e.g. your bench
i’ll take a stuffed takkie but not a real dog 😄
Hutspot is my favorite stamppot. So lekker!
if google translate is translating that correctly, that is amazing 😂
Tell the camera lol.
love your new haircut
Does your guide also have a section on good reasons NOT to move to Netherlands? Whether it's struggles people should keep in mind, or bad reasons people might think were good reasons to move there in the first place? I think that would be immensely helpful in deciding if Netherlands is the right place for any given person.
the first one yes (struggles to keep in mind and expectations around specific challenges like the cost of moving and the housing shortage).
we did talk about doing the second one, but it’s such a complicated decision for most people, ya know?
But.... can that butter knife also cut the cheese?
I'll stop now.
ba dum cha! 😄
Pannenkoeken met stroop is traditional, no worries
Deco idea:
Look for high resolution pictures of historic Dordrecht.
Ask a local theatre if they are willing to let go of some posters from previous shows (or if they can put some away for you).
and probably a bit kitsch or campy, but the old "Aap Noot Mies" posters from Dutch preschools are pretty neat too. :)
and a protip for cutting sausage with hard casings with any knife; poke it with a fork, then cut where the holes are. ;)
If you ever need to hang up something without damaging your wall, the "klevende spijkers" from Tesa might be worth checking out. Apart from that, great video as always. 😉
Love horse meat..
he did not got some
You totally need a poster of the Deventer skyline.😌Also, Dali! Can't go wrong with Dali.
Yes! Pancakes with bacon, cheese and sirup. Jealous. Love the posters. Live in the netherlands but have never had your pizza baguette. But I don’t like Brussels sprouts. It is something common in the Netherlands but, I hate them so much that when it was for dinner, as a kid, my parents Made me eat as much of them as the age I had at the time.
i’ve always loved them. which is weird especially for a kid i think 😂
i get it though, they’re polarizing
@@bunchartedhaha true, I don’t think many kids like them. And with adults it is either you hate them or you love them. But I think they are pretty healthy so its just a plus that you already liked them as a kid.
I love your videos so i’m looking forward to see more of your content. Greetings from Drenthe.
Hutspot… for LUNCH?
I hate hutspot tbh. However, for any Dutch stamppot (I happen to love Boerenkool).. if you want to mash it, I recommend taking the pot off the fire for a bit to save your induction plate (I assume that you cook electric by the looks of things) mashing it with the pot on the counter (perhaps with a cloth under it if the pan is hot), then you get to mash it a lot more violently (which is fun, IMO) :-D
Paardenworst,,,lang geleden
I do a little bit of powdered sugar on my bacon cheese pannekoek. Its just THAT GOOD
Oh and check out Zuiderzee museum in Enkhuizen, I'm sure you'll love it!
Everybody loves stroop on their spek pannekoek, with or without cheese :D definitely not controversial!
hutspot mist appelmoes
My wife and I are planning on relocating to the Netherlands. Will definitely purchase the guide, being a seasoned expatriate, it helps to know the land you are immigrating to. 😅
Cheese pannekoek is best made with crispy cheese , thats the best. Don't fold the pannekoek. 😀.. oeh ,Like your pizza. 👍
.
With pannenkoeken almost nothing is controversial.
Did you peel the “skin” of the paardenworst? Normally you don’t eat it like you eat a rookworst 😅
haha whoops
we ended up doing just that since the skin was so thick (still confused about why it wasn’t like that at verkerk though)
🎉 I’m trying to get in contact with you guys, does Instagram works for that?
Remove the skin from the horse meat saucage net time😊
good idea! it wasn’t an issue with the old slagerij 🤔
What I love is spek apple pancake, with syrup of course, but also with sugar and cinnamon on the apples. And yes, cheese pancake with syrup too.
