You are so right. If Ewan missed ducking Ray’s saber by even a fraction of a second, then that’s a wrap for the day. That would have hurt! The sequence in the film after the laser barrier opens and Obi-wan runs up to Maul...that blistering exchange is still my favorite saber moment in the series 🙂
I used to play the episode 1 movie game on pc, and they had the buttons for main menu with frames of "gif" clips of the movie. One of the was of this scene. And gosh yes, it's my favorite too!
I think it's so cool that Liam Neeson's precise, fluid, powerful style perfectly matches Qui Gon's zen, mindful personality. And Ewan's intensity and knack for picking up the choreography really shows a young Obi Wan's eagerness, with just the slightest insufficiency of discipline. Ray's previous training makes Maul a visibly formidable opponent. The casting in these movies was just so perfect.
That’s a big reason why obiwan was able to survive against Anakin. It was because of their relationship and the years they’d sparred and fought beside each other. They knew each other’s moves better than their own. So the fight looks more choreographed because to the characters a lot of it is just reflexive because they know each other’s tricks. Other Jedi didn’t have that relationship with Anakin and so they weren’t able to overcome the immense power gap. But even with a huge power gap, obiwan was able to utilize his defensive style and his history with Anakin to stay in the game long enough to get a victory condition (high ground)
Exactly. On top of that, Obi-Wan's style/form was a perfect counter for Anakin's. When he was first trained by Qui-Gon - up until the end of The Phantom Menace - Obi-Wan used Ataru; it's a high-speed, high-energy offensive form that utilizes the Force to enhance the user's physicality, resulting in enhanced speed, reflexes, and acrobatics. This form came with a caveat, however, in that if the fight became prolonged the user would eventually run out of steam - this is what happened with Qui-Gon, and Maul took advantage of it. After he had watched his master lose, Obi-Wan switched to Soresu: a defensive form. By the end of the Clone Wars, Anakin used Djem-So, a form that focused on counter-attacks and powerful strikes, so Obi-Wan's Soresu allowed him to "rope-a-dope" and not be taken advantage of.
And and... It was Obi's experience fighting Maul that taught him the importance of the high ground. So when Anakin tried to jump over him liked he had to Maul he was ready for it. Stating "don't do it" he knew he would best Anakin in that moment.
Like almost every single person, the Darth Maul character blew me away when I first saw him. Ray Park is the all time greatest and I hope he realises how much he is loved in the franchise.
This is the difference between the prequels and the sequels, in the prequels there's so much care and passion that went into it and so much effort and professionalism, the sequels didn't do any of that, they had stopped being Star Wars and a space opera and had become just another action film with bland lifeless characters, half assed fight scenes and big explosions with a few cheap jokes along the way.
Something I hesrd about the final duel in Episode 1 was that Ewen McGregor and Ray Parks were so well rehearsed that they actually slowed the fight down in post because they didn't think audiences would think the fight was realistic.
the older i get the more im in awe of ewan and liam's abilities as actors to step into this intense fast and dangerous choreography. Thank you for Duel of the Fates!

I saw Empire when I was 8 years old. I loved Star Wars ever since... Besides jar jar I loved the prequels!!!! Thank goodness for Ewan McGregor, Liam Neeson & Ray Park they were what was needed for this to work.... And it did.
I love how they studied the fightstyle and art of swords / sticks to then make it into something fitting into this fantasy almost scifi style. Its why I love lightsabers the most, they are iconic for the movies and yet can have so many different ways of using them. Even in episodes 7,8, and 9, however you look at it, you saw moves that you didnt think of before, there are still possibilities :D
I love the part with George talking about the emotions on the actors face & how he didnt want to use stunt doubles. Like the part when Maul kicks Obi-Wan away & Qui-Gon immediately retaliated with a physical fisted attack. You can see how Maul hurting Obi-Wan enraged Qui-gon for that moment, & possibly leading to how Qui-Gon kept fighting Maul instead of waiting for Obi-Wan to catch up. Episode 1 is still my favorite 😁

The sophistication and attention to detail that went into the prequels is so understated. This stuff was crazy back in 1999. George Lucas was pushing the limit!
idk why the prequels got a load of hate, they give a great understanding of why everything that happened in the originals happened and how everything ended up and they are great in general. amazing movies, prove me wrong
There is only 1 prequel I like and it's my favorite movie out of all the 9 skywalker saga movies, Revenge of the Sith. My second favorite is Rouge One and third is Empire Strikes back.
The prequels had some good stuff. But I have a question, if the phantom menace is about 30 years before the OT, why has everyone forgotten the force exists and doesn’t believe in it? Especially when there were thousands of jedi everywhere doing flips and powerful manoeuvres across the universe
I love watching these featurettes and documentaries I can watch these for hours of every single movie that came out for Star wars 1 through 9 rogue one solo. I can just be drowned in so much behind the scenes content. Visual effects, costume design, the fights, the story, concept art etc. That's how much I love Star wars and that's why Star wars is so much in depth.
They were so good at that fight that George had to actually slow down the video because he thought people would believe they had sped it up artificially!
3:30 liam literally says the problem with the disney sequels about how its supposed to look quick and elegant the disney sequels look like there swinging barbells around
Wow. I know that one of the biggest complaints about the prequel trilogy was that the lightsaber fights seemed choreographed, but watching that short sequence of strikes in slow motion really helped me to see that a lot of the strikes were actually attacks that just happened to be intercepted at such a fast pace, that it only looked as though they were aiming at one another's weapons.
I don’t think Nick Gillard and Ray Park get enough credit. They pretty much defined what a true lightsaber duel should look like in the Star Wars universe.
I got to meet Ray Park once. Really cool guy. We talked about martial arts for a bit and I didn't know this at the time, but he told me his primary art was Shaolin Kung Fu. Craziness.
I watched these all the time as a kid. This one was always one of my favorites. I also still think Duel of the Fates is the best lightsaber duel in all of the movies.
Ray Park..What a legend! If only his character got the arc he deserved. But I do love these fight scene BTS sections. Her's to hoping Qui-Gon and Maul appear in the new Kenobi series in some form or another!
These movies are so good because unlike the 80's ones - these ones are related to the past, the dream, the legend, the stories. So they had to have this kind of light they have.
At the time of speaking about the ancient Sith Lords, Lucas would think about figures that were created in Legends like Exar Kun or Revan or completely different beings that only existed in his head?
Exar Kun , Marka Ragnos and Naga Sadow were all created prior to tpm and the original prop Ray park used was a replica of the short hilt used by Exar Kun although Ray asked for it to be lengthened
Watching all these prequel featurettes on the DVDs as a kid was more inspiration for me than nearly anything else in my life for filmmaking and reason to believe in your own crazy ideas. These people exude love for what they do and their happiness in doing it.
Qui Gon really does have a beautiful form in the movie. It's very subdued, controlled, direct, and flowing like a real master of the art. In contrast to Obi Wan's erratic, intense, eager and passionate Padawan style. Maul is like a combination of the two only more talented than the Jedi at both. That's why I love this fight along with all the duels in ROTS. They tell a story and narrate with the fighting. Who's more naturally skilled? Who's more cautious? Who's on the offensive or defensive at any given time? Who's starting to lose their edge? What type of character is this judging by their combat style alone? I felt that Attack of the Clones didn't really accomplish this as well as this fight and the one's in ROTS. It was just Dooku verbally saying, "Yeah, I'm more powerful than you.", where it would have been allot more climactic and intense for him to show that in the fight itself. Don't get me wrong the fight in AOTC was and is still a good fight, but the choreography just isn't even on the same level for some reason.
*After leaving Tatooine Qui-Gon receives a transmission from Darth Maul* Qui-Gon: I don't know who you are, I don't know what you want. If you're looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have much aside from Republic Credits, but what I DO have, I have a particular set of skills. Skills I had been trained in throughout my childhood. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. So, if you promise to leave the boy alone, that will be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you...But if you keep chasing him....I WILL look for you.....I WILL find you...........and I will kill you.... Darth Maul:......good luck......

Eh, had Ray and Ewan made a mistake they would have probably been badly hurt, not his whole head taken off. Duel of the Fates was an excellently choreographed fight scene where you can tell the expertise and training of all the coordinators. I think what made it so groundbreaking was we had never seen it before and it solidified how bad ass the jedi were. All we had seen were these very medieval broadsword style fights with laser swords. My cousins made fun of me for loving SW so much. Then they all jumped onto the bandwagon of how badass the Jedi are upon seeing Duel of the Fates.
i whole heartedly believe that ray was born for that role. if anyone else did it, it wouldn't have come close to the effect and would likely have come off tacky. the guy will never get any awards for his performance but we all will remember him and thats even better. Ray, you nailed it, thank you.

It’s a great movie. And the final fight is perfect there is nothing to change ! 🙏
I remember watching these as a kid, completely captivated me! The dream job.
Its been 20 years old and it still has the greatest lightsaber fight besides anakin vs obi wan
Ray Park is so humbling to play Darth Maul. He’s got the immense talent to display what the director wants Darth Maul to do.
Just the amount of shear talent, commitment, and drive that went into the first episodes were absolutely amazing.
They were so good at that fight that George had to actually slow down the video because he thought people would believe they had sped it up artificially!
3:30 liam literally says the problem with the disney sequels about how its supposed to look quick and elegant the disney sequels look like there swinging barbells around
Liam Neeson just seems so warm and sweet.😊😊 He is the only acceptable version of Qui gon Jinn for me.
This little series is just so good, feels like I’m with my star wars obsessed friend watching the documentaries
May the force be with you always
Ray Park made Darth Maul the iconic Sith he was.
My favorite part of the movie, hell of a set of scenes, epic battle....
7:20 copy claimed, WATCH OUT!!!
Ray Park is so talented…I mean look at that side salto and how we open the doors…So badass.
“The fights were written as a line of dialogue.”
Must have forgotten about that concept in the sequels.
I love your content and commitment! Thank you!
I met Ray Park and shook his hand. He's a cool dude!
Oh wow, epic bro!
Did you perhaps cut his leg off?
@@obi-wankenobi2976 No, Obi Wan. You already cut him in half. I think that's enough!
@@jars7774 I was star struck. That dude still has it! He has hardly aged.
@@EUROPAMusicOfficialChannel Just a little finger this time ok?
I got to meet Ray Park once. Really cool guy. We talked about martial arts for a bit and I didn't know this at the time, but he told me his primary art was Shaolin Kung Fu. Craziness.
I watched these all the time as a kid. This one was always one of my favorites. I also still think Duel of the Fates is the best lightsaber duel in all of the movies.
Ray Park..What a legend! If only his character got the arc he deserved.
But I do love these fight scene BTS sections. Her's to hoping Qui-Gon and Maul appear in the new Kenobi series in some form or another!
Liam Neeson needs an asmr channel. I would watch that every day.
Those're probably created later based on the idea / concept from George
he was thinking about Bane, Revan didn't even exist in 1999
Exar Kun , Marka Ragnos and Naga Sadow were all created prior to tpm and the original prop Ray park used was a replica of the short hilt used by Exar Kun although Ray asked for it to be lengthened
@@raicattivo oh really ? Any source / video / link that confirm that ?
Idk About the second bit because a friend told me but the release dates of the original run of Tales of Jedi confirms the first bit
Who else wants to see a work print of each prequel movie. Because I’d love to see a 3 hour cut of all of this. Give me the whole fight uncut.
*After leaving Tatooine Qui-Gon receives a transmission from Darth Maul*
Qui-Gon: I don't know who you are, I don't know what you want.
Alternative universe?
Meanwhile me watching:
So stoked to see a EWAN MCGREGOR lightsaber once again this year when Obi-wan series is released. The dude was so good. They had an embarrassment of riches when they cast him. Just perfect.
I remember when episode 1 came out god damn the theaters were packed lol but holy hell was it worth it by far darth maul is my favorite villain in all of star wars, and that double bladed staff saber is amazing.
Most people are probably just experiencing this for the first time but i watched the prequel docs to death as a kid. Nice to see them again
Why is there prequel hate in the comments? This channel covers mostly prequel era things. If they don’t like that much, why are they here?

because you gotta complain to ruin people's fun lmao
Ray Park was well known in UK Martial Arts / Weaponry scene. Lots of people were very happy when he got this role. Well deserved.
When Liam Neeson talks about light sabers… 😊😊😌😌🤤🤤😴😴😴😴. Very calming.
Fun fact for some of the scenes on tatoooine they had to make the set bigger so Liam can even walk
i whole heartedly believe that ray was born for that role. if anyone else did it, it wouldn't have come close to the effect and would likely have come off tacky. the guy will never get any awards for his performance but we all will remember him and thats even better. Ray, you nailed it, thank you.
Honestly the phantom menace has some of the best sword fighting scenes in any movie in my humble opinion
my heart swells with joy seeing this again. i dunno where the prequels got their bad rep but i loved it. seeing ray's, liam's and ewan's perspective is great

Love the effort put into this

@@stormtenvelden4987 people can have opinions. As much as I love this movie for nostalgia and the action scenes the plot is kinda dumb and the dialougue is horrendous. Go watch cosmonauts video on the prequels he explains this pretty well
Sam Witwer may be Maul’s voice but Ray Park physically embodies him perfectly. I wouldn’t want anyone else playing him physically.
I love how he provides Star Wars stuff most of us can’t see
