      James Guy Photography so people suggest that the first thing you do is turn off your computer, (for safety reasons I presume), though he suggests you leave it plugged in so you can ground yourself using it to keep any static electricity from ruining your computer.

    Hi. My question is how to get a replaced hard drive to boot up and go into windows. Because I really wanted to save the data on the hard drive from a 2002 Dell Windows XP desktop computer that went out on me and no longer booted up and stayed on, I took that hard drive and put it into a 2004 Dell Windows XP desktop computer hoping it would just boot up and work. The replaced hard drive in the 2004 Dell read the hard drive but it would not go into Windows. It just goes round and round saying "how do you want to start your Windows?". Can you give me some advice on how I can possibly get my replaced hard drive to work in the Dell 2004 I just got???? I'm aware it might be a longshot. Thank you kindly.... - James

      You need to unplug one of the drives and power up the computer to see which drive is missing. Alternatively you can get the serial number of the drive from the PC and read that on the label of the drive.

    Little question if i put an old hard drive with windows installed in a new computer without windows, will the new computer get windows automatically? or will windows be deleted?

    • @jhottell
      @jhottell 10 лет назад +1

      If you have a hard drive with windows already on it and you put it in a new computer, windows will probably boot on the new machine. When windows boots up it will start replacing drivers and reconfigure some things as it was previously set up for a different machine. Also, Windows will detect complete change in hardware so it will want to re-activate, this should be successful as long as the cd-key used is still valid. If the key was from an old volume license (like an expired TechNet account) it may not activate, you would need to put in a valid key to activate Windows.
