This song was so controversial at the time- society was not ready for this. The Catholic Church and society, had an issue with her dressed scantily in church kissing a Black Jesus, and the burning crosses. Just the idea of portraying a black Jesus- blew people’s minds! She lost a multi- million dollar Pepsi deal, because of this video. If you have not already noticed, Madonna is known for pushing boundaries and not giving a crap. She paved the way! Iconic! “Justify my love”will shock you.
A lot of people thought so, but it wasn't a "Black Jesus". It was a catholic saint by the name of ST. MARTIN OF PORRES from Peru. Madonna herself explained this, and the actor playing the role of the black saint, explained it as well during an interview, that you can still find on RUclips.
Anyone remember the hell …Madonna went thru….losing Pepsi contract….crazy times…She opened the eyes of millions thru her music and stardom…thank you Madonna
They still were ordered to pay her that 40 mil cause free speech! I remember. I laughed at pepsi... we loved coke.. they were lucky to have Mj and Madonna hock their soda. Remember the soda wars? Lol
You haven't seen anything by anybody until you've seen Madonna live. No idea how great she is. Like A Prayer from the Blond Ambition tour and also from the Sticky and Sweet Tour will blow your mind. She's an unparalleled artist from any generation, male of female.
There’s so much symbolism in this video. The saint and the falsely accused man are the same person. The church and the jail are the same sets. The burning crosses that represent intimidation. A woman witnesses evil and seeks sanctuary in a church. She falls asleep on a pew and dreams of the saint coming to life and her realization (though stigmata) that she must become the savior to the falsely accused man. Her dancing in front of the burning crosses represents overcoming fear and intimidation. This video, and the whole story of how its controversy was epic in so many ways. This was Madonna taking over artistic control of her career. Prince did not write the song but he played that guitar rift that opens the song…when you first see her running and falling.
At some point you MUST react to Madonna's LIVE performances. Performing LIVE is what really sets Madonna apart from all other music artists and what made Madonna the Legend / Icon that she is today.
The Madonna everybody knows: Express Yourself => Justify my Love => Secret => Frozen => Hung up (or Sorry) Madonna more seriously and showing a little more of herself: Live to Tell => Of Father => Human Nature => Drowned World (Substitute for Love) => Ghost Town
The guitar riff you hear at the beginning of the song was PRINCE Rogers from Minneapolis. Also Prince and Madonna collaborated in the track LOVE SONG, included in the Like a Prayer Album.
Seeing your love for this song is great. Being older than you guys I can remember being at my aunt's house as a ten year old, waiting by the TV with the VCR at ready. And when this Pepsi commercial came on the entire world STOPPED. Nobody talked. Nobody even knew what we were watching but we knew it was incredible. The mass hysteria after it was insane. The church called it blasphemy, Pepsi never played the commercial again. It was one of those moments in history that was nothing short of iconic. Nobody does it like this anymore. Also, this remains my favorite song of hers despite me loving quite a huge selection of her catalog. Genius all around.
its literally the perfect song. every note, every vocal, every key, verse, bridge, chorus, is perfection. it is sad, joyous, political, religious. it will never not sound like it was written the year its being listened to and not 1989.
My favorite Madonna eras are 1) Spiritual Madonna (Ray of Light), 2) Disco Madonna (Confessions on a Dancefloor), 3) Erotica/Sex Book Madonna, 4) Folktronica Madonna (Music). Loved Madonna week!!! New subscriber. Next Madonna week needs to be: Frozen, Bedtime Stories, Justify My Love, Hung Up, Don't Tell Me.
The fact that your youth group leaders were warning everyone not to watch it kind of reflects the broader societal tensions at the time-pop culture pushing boundaries and traditional institutions resisting it. But you’re right; for many young people, telling them not to watch something only made it more irresistible. Sneaking in listens on Walkmans or catching the video at night probably made it all the more thrilling!
"Like a prayer" the lead single and title track from the album of the same name. "Like a prayer" album is often considered by critic as the perfect pop album. Madonna dug deep and did a 180 on this project: she got personal, it's an album about family and faith, it's also her divorce album with Sean Penn. Co-written with Patrick Leonard, and the music video directed by Mary Lambert, it's consistently on best video lists. The video started with Madonna, running away from something, fell just outside of a church, went in for a refuge, fell asleep, and had a dream where one of the saints (not Jesus), became flesh, and inspired her to tell how to proceed with her conundrum. When she woke with a choir singing and resolved to clear the name of a black person accused of a murder he didn't commit. A mini story that is still sadly relevant in the US. More Madonna video please.
I was having a chuckle watching the boys mouth along to the lyrics of the chorus obvs not picking up the meaning of the lyrics. Down on my knees, I want to take you there. Haha 😂 😂❤❤❤
Racial injustice. People being indifferent to the crime they witness. White supremacy. Stigmata. Religious euphoria with God. All put into a music video in the form of a play. Art imitates life. Every Madonna video release and “live” performance WAS an event in itself back then. The only Queen that matters.
I hope you do a 2nd week with some more modern Madonna songs. I discovered her around the year 2000 so my faves are from 2000 onwards. I’d suggest, American Life (Director’s cut), 4 Minutes, Hung Up, Girl Gone Wild & Ghosttown.
Madonna really was a master at sparking controversy to create conversation. Today, with social media and the normalization of pushing boundaries, something like Like a Prayer might not cause the same uproar. Things that once shocked the world are now often met with a shrug. Do you think the thrill of those rebellious moments in music has faded a bit over time?
You guys are great, so fun to watch. With the exception of vogue, this coulda been 80s week Madonna. Madonna is the legend of the video music era, so you could do MANY top 5s!! Here’s my fan pic…and, I’ll just do 90s Madonna: 1. Human Nature 2. Justify My Love 3. Deeper and Deeper 4. Frozen 5. I Want You HM-bad girl, nothing really matters, bedtime story Also, might be fun to do a fan pic top 5 live performance - she’s a phenomenal live artist!!
My favourite part of this video is at 4:16 when the guy jumps down from the roof like a vampire. Also, I can imagine Joe doing exactly that in the car. 🤣
That cool guitar riff you hear at the beginning of the song... that is Prince. Also, they did one song together called Love Song included in the Like A Prayer album.
I just now realised that 'Dawn on my knees, I'm gonna take you there' is not about praying LOL - My dream reaction would be Top 5 controversial videos: Madonna Erotica, Prince Get off, Lady Gaga Judas, etc
You could also do a Madonna Live Week - some of my favourite Madonna performances are Express Yourself and Like a Virgin from the 1990 Blond Ambition Tour, Sooner or Later at the 1991 Oscars, Frozen at the BBC 1998, Hung Up at the 2005 Grammys
MADONNA is a totally different artist, with every new album she releases, so there are as many "Madonna Eras", as there are Madonna albums. 1-Madonna 2-Like a Virgin 3-True Blue 4-Like a Prayer 5- I'm Breathless (Soundtrack to a movie staring Madonna) 6-Erotica 7-Bedtime Stories 8-Evita (Soundtrack to a movie staring Madonna) 9-Ray of Light (The album that defines a BEFORE and AFTER in Madonna's career) 10-Music 11-American Life 12-Confessions on a Dance Floor 13-Hard Candy 14-MDNA 15-Rebel Heart 16-Madame X
I would love you to do a Madonna week based on the music videos, I think these 5 are iconic: #5 American Life - Uncensored #4 Oh Father #3 God Control #2 Bedtime Story #1 Frozen
Every Madonna fan got into her in a certain of her eras - mine was Erotica in 1992. Of course, you then go back through her catalogue. So my era was dominatrix Madonna.
My mum went to see Madonna in the early 90s because she loved her and she said getting there was so scary because hundreds or thousands were outside with banners, signs screaming throwing things saying they were going to hell, how Madonna was a wh*re and worse she went on to say it was one of the best concerts she’s ever been to! Madonna literally changed the world and music many times and was hated at the times that she did it, literally suffered so she could open the door for other artists to express themselves, however they wanted or needed
Such a great and deep reaction for a masterpiece song which is one of the ones that made 80s the 80s. This great reaction for this masterpiece will never be duplicated 😂😂 By the way Madonna and Patrick Leonard wrote and produced this song, the lyrics written entirely by Madonna as almost always. Noone else had a hand on writing this song.
It’s wild how certain moments in pop culture like LAP (I’m guessing you mean "Like a Prayer" by Madonna) stirred such massive reactions back in the day! That video was a real cultural shockwave when it dropped in 1989. With the imagery of burning crosses, religious symbolism, and Madonna's provocative persona, it was no surprise that religious groups, especially the Catholic Church, were outraged. Pepsi even canceled their sponsorship deal with her because of the backlash. MTV pushing the video to late-night slots shows how sensitive the issue was, even though it became iconic.
Great Madonna video you need to review an early 80s Madonna song (sidewalk talk) wasn't a big hit but great song also madonnas cover of Abbas like an angel passing through .cheers guys will from the uk
I see it was mentioned she had a Pepsi deal for over 2 million dollars for this song in their commercial. It aired a couple times, then this video was released and the Pepsi contract was cancelled.
Madonna Eras 1. Boy Toy Madonna 1983 2. Virgin/Whore 1985 3. Platinum Bombshell 1986-1991 4. Dita Parlo / Sex Era 1992 5. Romantic Madonna 1995-1996 6. Veronica Electronica 1998 - 2003 7. Disco Goddess 2005 8. Post Divorce Madonna 2008 - 2012 9. Rebel Heart Madonna 2015 10. Madame X Era 11. Legacy Celebration Era 2023 40 Years in Music 🎉 4.
There's also an TV ad version "Pepsi Version" of this video. Pepsi cancelled her contract after she released the main one, wonder why 😊. Life is a mistery? The live version during her Blonde Ambition Tour is outstanding! This video was sooooo controversial in the 80s!🎉
Actually ...MTV banned this video....becoz they think it was too much for them......eventually the video becomes one of the ICONIC VIDEOS OF ALL TIME IN THE POP HISTORY...no one can repeat that of what she did in music HISTORY....she may not be the great vocalist...but what she contributed in the music industry made her an ICON...!!!
Actually, the LIKE A PRAYER video was never banned. You must be thinking about the PEPSI commercial Madonna did to launch her new album. That commercial aired prior to the release of the official video. Then when the Like A Prayer video premiered, it caused such a controversy among religious groups, that PEPSI decided to pulled the commercial. However, MTV continue playing the video.
Madonna is a natural brunette. This is one-too-few of her many videos that she does not have blonde hair (two other videos are "Who's that Girl" from 1988 and she has chestnut brown hair and "Frozen" from 1998 where she has longer black hair).
It has long been alleged that it is Prince playing the guitar sample at the beginning of the video, but it didn’t appear on the album. This was frighteningly polarising in 1989. Religious groups went crazy which pushed the Vatican at the time to condemn it as it contained burning of the cross and the depiction of a black Jesus. Madonna lost a multi million dollar Pepsi deal over it. I It was directed by the incredible Mary Lambert.
hello, the beginning of this song is played by prince. inside the album there is a duet between madonna and prince love song. i would like to see you react to these videos of madonna , frozen , hung up ,la isla bonita, i rise, and finally a beautiful version of paradise not for me live from confession tour. please tank you
Ok, you two didn’t seem to catch the political & societal impact this video had in 1989, the video depicts racial injustice and profiling, in a time when no other stars were willing to put their careers on the line, to bring awareness.
Madonna who is referred to as the queen of pop. Like a prayer in my opinion is her most iconic song. Prince did not write the song. Prince did the guitar riff. Madonna and Patrick Leonard wrote the song. The next 5 most iconic songs of Madonna and there are many would be 1. Papa Don’t Preach 2. La Isla bonita 3. Express Yourself 4. Justify my love 5. Frozen Seriously guys you need to do about 5 weeks of these top 5’s to cover all the Madonna classics Remember this is a women who has scored 49 top 40 hits, 38 top 10 hits, 28 top 5 hits and 12 no.1 singles. Madonna was a hit making machine worldwide from 1984 to 2008!! No other solo artist imo comes close to releasing hit songs for 25 years straight!!
Dream reaction? How about try and reacting to her "Like a Prayer" number from the Blonde Ambition Yokohama/Osaka JAPAN Tour? You can find it here on RUclips.
I think one of the earlier comments on this thread is unfair in accusing you of not realising the significance of the impact this video had on society in 1989, because you weren't around then. It is obvious that you have real joy in the song, and remember it from childhood, and it is after all one of those few songs from this era which completely transcends the time it was released. Even its sound is not pinnable down to the late 80s; it's a true accomplishment. It is hard, however, to express the impact that this video had at the time when big artists like Madonna sort of released videos to the entire nation (and the world) as premieres on TV. The depiction of a black saint or black Jesus figure, the correlation of that figure with a falsely accused, innocent black man who is helping a female victim of assault and who then gets framed for the crime, the fact that Madonna kisses this person in the video, the burning crosses... it was all just so unacceptable and shocking to so many people in America (and in the Vatican). She lost her Pepsi endorsement deal as a sole result of this video. But she also earned the respect of people in the future, if you see what I mean. The way that this is so ahead of its time is still unbelievable to me. I was 12 when it came out and I remember not understanding what was supposed to be wrong with it! I get it now. The music videos of Michael Jackson, Madonna's peer at this time, are rightly praised for being ahead of its time in terms of technical process and the sheer extraordinariness of his performance, but this video, is ahead of its time in its entire concept. Unlike MJ, she has never got enough credit for it. She has never got enough credit for anything. We are so lucky that she is still around and creating music. Your videos this week have been lots of fun.
This video was so ahead of its time. Love that you guys enjoyed it. Madonna is such an amazing artist. Fearless

America freaked out over this. In the UK however, we saw no controversy and loved it. The club version used to make the place explode!
This song is history

G'day it's Steven from Down Under
All hail the Queen of Pop!
You are correct. This is Prince on guitar. They have a duo on the Like A Prayer album. 💜
A serious banger…hard to resist. By far her best song. Second is Express Yourself.
Love hanging with you guys. I was 13 when this came out and a huge fan. Great to see you appreciating it. Prince plays guitar on it
I love hearing about your memories with your mom dancing around to this. So cool y’all share those memories
i just love watching the modern generation reacting to my childhood pop culture ...it brightens up my childhood memories 😅
I was having a chuckle watching the boys mouth along to the lyrics of the chorus obvs not picking up the meaning of the lyrics. Down on my knees, I want to take you there. Haha 😂 😂❤❤❤
This is my favorite Madonna song too. Classic.
More Madonna on this channel please! :)
More Madonna please. My Queen
Love your Madonna reactions guys, please do a Madonna week 2. You guys are awesome ❤
Love this video...iconic... Irreverent...protest...revolution world... XP
Just amazing. There must be many more Madonna weeks coming up.
I just stumbled on your video reaction and I'll definitely be checking out more! Madonna fan since 1984 :-)
I hope you do a 2nd week with some more modern Madonna songs. I discovered her around the year 2000 so my faves are from 2000 onwards.
I’d suggest, American Life (Director’s cut), 4 Minutes, Hung Up, Girl Gone Wild & Ghosttown.
Madonna really was a master at sparking controversy to create conversation. Do you think the thrill of those rebellious moments in music has faded a bit over time?

My favourite part of this video is at 4:16 when the guy jumps down from the roof like a vampire. Also, I can imagine Joe doing exactly that in the car. 🤣
Great video guys Madonna is a guilty pleasure for me I love this song and her song frozen 😊respect 🙏
That cool guitar riff you hear at the beginning of the song... that is Prince.
Also, they did one song together called Love Song included in the Like A Prayer album.

Loved Madonna week great reactions new subscriber❤
My mum went to see Madonna in the early 90s because she loved her and she said getting there was so scary because hundreds or thousands were outside with banners, signs screaming throwing things saying they were going to hell, how Madonna was a wh*re and worse she went on to say it was one of the best concerts she’s ever been to! You guys are spot on. Love your reaction to this masterpiece song.
FROZEN next please! Talk about transforming herself.
Brown hair-- Try watching "A League of their Own" from 1992, Madonna had the same brown hair color, from 'Like a Prayer', in that movie.
This video was sooooo controversial in the 80s!🎉
Interesting Madonna videos to react to:
Deeper and Deeper
Bedtime Story

American Life (original version)
Looks like a Madonna Wee 2 is warranted,,,,,,,,and overdue.
Lols theres a pepsi ad beneath this on mine😅
I honestly watched this just for the Elaine comment 😂
Only her.
However, MTV continue playing the video.
i think she had that color of hair becouse she wanted to look on christ mother. this song pissed pope so much back in time :)

Legendary I might be gay but Madonna was smoking hot in 1989, such a great video.
Ok, you two didn’t seem to catch the political & societal impact this video had in 1989, the video depicts racial injustice and profiling, in a time when no other stars were willing to put their careers on the line, to bring awareness.
Hey, but that was 80s Madonna's songs...you should do also 90s o 2000s Madonna's songs! the 80s were only the beginning of all! ;)
React to La isla bonita, Erotica, Hung Up, Secret, Frozen
When is Mariah week number 2?
🤩😍❤️
Madonna who is referred to as the queen of pop. Like a prayer in my opinion is her most iconic song. Prince did not write the song. Prince did the guitar riff. Madonna and Patrick Leonard wrote the song.
The next 5 most iconic songs of Madonna and there are many would be
1. Papa Don’t Preach
2. La Isla bonita
3. Express Yourself
4. Justify my love
5. Frozen
Seriously guys you need to do about 5 weeks of these top 5’s to cover all the Madonna classics
Remember this is a women who has scored 49 top 40 hits, 38 top 10 hits, 28 top 5 hits and 12 no.1 singles.
Madonna was a hit making machine worldwide from 1984 to 2008!! No other solo artist imo comes close to releasing hit songs for 25 years straight!!

She lost her deal with Pepsi because of this video.
Our dream Madonna reaction would be : justify my love, Erotica, deeper and deeper, bad girl and Fever ( live from the girlie show )
