'Is this the best platform game?'. The true answer to that: it is at least polished and focused design-wise. It just depends on personal preference. In this case, this game focuses on open expressiveness, unlike the original 2D basic "Super Mario" games and the "New Super Mario Bros." sub-franchise (which I call the '2D basic' era, mainly because of the arcade feeling). It is creative in pretty much every way; a new era and a new beginning for the 2D franchise. It is also a legacy sequel to the original 2D "Super Mario" games and the "New Super Mario Bros." sub-franchise. Pretty much everyone from the previous generations will enjoy this completely fresh new 2D game. Of course, there are certain people who will complain about certain parts on this game, no matter what. That is just the way it goes. Personally, I will stick to the original 2D "Super Mario" games and the "New Super Mario Bros." sub-franchise for the arcade feeling. But I have no problem with this game departing from the traditional standard. It is up to the younger generation to continue the legacy of the 2D franchise.
