  • The "volcanic crater" Höwenegg near Immendingen with its mysterious crater lake is not only a jewel among the natural wonders of the Swabian Alb, but also protected as a nature reserve and habitat of rare plants and animals.
The main crater is the largest of a total of six eruption sites. The fine-grained dark basalt rocks visible in the lower part of the crater are overlaid by basalt tuffs up to 30 m thick. Basalt was mined here from the beginning of the 20th century until 1980. In the former mining area, the lake visible today was formed, which is not, however, identical to a crater lake from the Tertiary Period.
An eruption took place 10 million years ago in the upper Miocene (Tertiary). A lake formed, which was visited by numerous animals. Fossil finds of three-toed primeval horses, antelopes and rhinoceroses attest to the then subtropical climate. They were excellently preserved in the lake sediment. The world-famous finds can be admired in the natural history museums in Karlsruhe and Stuttgart. But there is also a small but worth seeing collection in the local museum of Immendingen.
