  • A quick comparison between two 1/4 Socket sets that i have, the Teng tools set is one i bought about 5 years ago, it was the first decent socket set i bought, in the past i had a variety of cheap socket sets which had problems with ratchets breaking or sockets snapping apart when loosening nuts.
My uncle has always bought teng tools and still has a socket set thats about 30 years old and everything is still in great condition, there is a farm supplies shop close to us that stocks teng tools.
However i bought a snap on set earlier in the year, it was second hand on ebay and i decided to bid on it, in the end the final price was over £200, it might seem expensive but one way of looking at it is that if i put these back on ebay they will still make the same money.
I have tried to do a bit of a comparison between the two ratchets here, the teng tools ratchet has fewer teeth than the snap on one, so in a confined space the snap on ratchet will click more times making it easier to tighten an awkward bolt, in this video i did the comparison under a shelving unit, but one place i can also remember the snap on set was better was the lower intercooler hose clamp on a Jaguar X type.
The sockets themselves both work in the same way, I've never had any problems with them stopping off bolt heads, although with the cheaper teng tools set i don't worry too much about hammering the sockets onto nuts and bolts.
Both sets have lifetime warranties, although i have never had to get any parts replaced before, i did buy a broken teng tools ratchet in a car boot sale for £3 and it was fixed under warranty, I'm sure the snap on set would be the same but its a case of getting to know the person driving about in the snap on van/lorry as there are no shops i know of locally that stock snap on tools.
Teng tools do the job perfectly for the DIYer, but i know plenty of mechanics who also use them and are perfectly happy with them, i am not a full time mechanic, i actually work as a designer in the drawing office of an engineering company with the work on cars/video editing being a hobby i do in my free time, i have no need for a snap on set but it is a nice socket set to have and use.
