      中国人花了那么多精力学英语,为啥还是看不懂times,economics,西方一大堆人跑到中国来旅游,最深的印象就是没人懂英文,他们要知道中国人多重视英文,花了多少力气学,肯定极为吃惊

      Wasn't a great experience, as a child, it was hard enough going to school learning English, mathematics, art, history and science and on top of that still got to learning Chinese when I get home, was a real torture. Was more or less a ritual, wasn't really learning. And once there's no reason to use Chinese, I completely stopped using Chinese in college. Yes, there was a period of time I struggled with Chinese. Eventually, I found my way back to relearning Chinese again. I now can read and speak Mandarin and Cantonese fluently, not so much writing.
      I can only say, from my experience, being pushed to constantly learn Chinese cause a different reaction in my part. If I were given a chance to learn Chinese from interacting with others and learning on my own, I may have a better appreciation for learning Chinese growing up.

    Hi Mike, my kid is a about the same age as yours. My kid is born and raised in Canada but he is able to retain his Chinese fluency primarily because my wife and I both speak to him in Mandarin at home. We did this intentionally because he talks to teachers and friends in English in school. The only way for him to maintain his Chinese is to talk Chinese whenever possible.

    It's an absolutely normal phenomenon. I lived in Sichuan province when I was only 4-5 years old, so I could speak Sichuan dialect fluently. But when I was 6 years old, I moved to Anhui province, I forgot all the Sichuan dialects and picked up Auhui dialects. This was an interesting thing. So kids can learn everything fast in an immersive environment and also everything can be easily forgotten without further practice.

    Once we decide to go back to Europe, we will face similar challenges. I heard it from other expats as well. And the same thing happened with my daughter‘s German once we had been in China for a few months.
    One of the things I start to consider for our next destination will be possible Chinese language education. Either in school or via a club or so. Also a Chinese community will be something we want to look out for to make it easy to stay in contact with the language.
    The approaches you mention are definitely great options and I will keep them in mind once the time comes. 😊

    In fact, learning a language is more like developing a skill. For example, my company is an international one, and when clients from around the world come for business visits, my boss specifically arranges colleagues who speak the clients’ native languages to accompany them and host business dinners. This makes the clients feel very comfortable. So, people who speak multiple languages are highly valued.😂

    If you do not want your child to not able to speak Mandarin. You need to provide only speaking Mandarin environment this can be at home. So he receive the exposure and speak it. Then, when he is back in China able to speak the language to his grandparents. Maybe every year you can go back to China able to have him speak the language. There is Chinese immersion school in the US that you can have your child go too.

  • @havenisse2009
    @havenisse2009 2 дня назад

    It will come, if he wants to. If Xiaoma can learn that skill in 1 year, so can your son. The window starts to close around 10-12,after it becomes harder.
    Your situation is probably the same everywhere in the world, if people go to another country with smaller children. And it should be like that. The future of the children is not your original country. Prevent them from mastering the new language they are in, and they get a serious disadvantage later. Example: Arabs in Scandinavia. The children that are not fully emerged in the local language, but kept inside arab-speaking environments often have a permanent "ghetto language" with a very heavy accent. That is a handicap later in job searches. Especially in a more mono-culture environment often found in Europe.
