A very simple and beneficial training augmentation. Something else I like to do is heavy carries/non-strapped rucking. I'll either take my ruck and physically carry it instead of having it on my back, or I'll find a rock/log on my way up a mountain or through a trail and carry it. It engages more muscles on your body as you have to shift weight to prevent fatigue. Doing so will also improve balance, and it's fun.
Old man here. I use water, up to five liters, because I drink some, the dog drinks some and I pour some into his fur. 900 to 1,150 miles a year leaving the house with 20-27 pound load out walking an 85 pound 98% of days. Water, poncho, knife, second knife, weather appropriate spare socks and hat, poncho, flashlight, spare leash, small hand tools, soome cord and straps, snacks, sidearm, spare mag, small first aid kit, mylar blanket, In the winter, spare gloves and scarf. It is great exercise for both of us and my wife gets the house to herself for a while. Just got home from 3.4 miles in the November rain about an hour ago.
@disillusioned070 i mean I just figured it's about the right weight and it adds a challenge. I look stupid doing it...I feel even stupider. But it made sense and if nothing else it adds a challege
@disillusioned070 well I mean you're not wrong it's awkward and not balanced at all. I tried making a carring handle and a 2 point sling out of duct tape and lets just say I already feel stupid. I'm still waiting for the day a karen calls and tells the cops I'm running down the street with body armor and a gun. Might paint it orange
The DS in Ft Dix NJ would put bricks in our ruck sacks back in the 80's and put you as road guards and you had to sprint when he yelled road guards post. One day during a march one of the road guards was running but had his head down and ran into a steel dumpster and we had steel pots , knocked himself smooth clean out.
I'll add 1 liter water bottles. First, if I need more water I've got it. Enough to share. Second, if I'm overloaded, I can dump a liter and get a break. Try again next time. 2 pounds per liter, give or take.
I carry a 3-4 kg gravel bag when walking. For fighting a stray or leached dog, a cane or a quarterstaff is more effective (the dog owner still holding the advantage). Baden Powell pushed the use of a quarterstaff for youth scouting, my guess was he had rifles in mind.
And it has been there on the floor for years. I know the feeling. All those years lost and if you had worked out at least 10 minutes a day, today you would have been ripped.
Well yes, the only way to get used to rucking is to ruck so the best way to get used to carrying a weight is to carry it. I weight train as it makes the ruck more comfortable and easy to carry and put extra water in as weight, especially if i don't have as much time to ruck that day but I've never done this, an interesting challenge.
Their is difference between iron metal dumbbells and plastic like rubbery dumbbells, the iron metal dumbbells is heavier and better than plastic colorful dumbbells
I took a 5 foot length of black iron pipe. Put red and white reflective tape for nighttime safety. Can come in handy as walking staff and critter protection if necessary. Fix bayonets!
Whoa... not to bring too much attention to it... but is this the first glimpse of Chris in his video? hard to believe there's a stock video of someone rucking with his GoRuck bag while also holding an 8 lb weight in a place that looks way too pretty to be the US.
That 7.5 lbs. doesn't feel so small at 15 miles. You can't sling it and must carry it out away from your body. I'd go w/ a piece of rebar or similar metal bar to make more realistic.
imperial "gallon was defined as equal in volume to *10 pounds* avoirdupois of distilled water weighed at 62 °F", If you mean customary gallon it's about 8.34 pound
@ ProJanitor 😂Haha I did our job, lotta commercial floor maintenance, then I'd work military & law enforcement training support with gusto.. You made a wise move perhaps..I served OUTSIDE of military, so didn't get the "post-requisite" back to ankles joint issues.. military physical time is HARSH on body. Not that work or play are any easier..protect what you have, my arthritis, overworking of a proir shoulder injury, and 3 hernias (one of which repaired) slow me down @ 50 & I have to rethink work..
@ Yeah, my boy from the Corps decided to stay in for his twenty. I met with him during the transition from his second enlistment to his third, and his body was already falling apart, not even halfway through his career.
@ProJanitor It is tough, having the courage but the body not allowing the strength to manifest physically..it's a profound sense unlike anything else to be part of something so great, to take upon yourself part of the load..the togetherness felt ..but sometimes we need to transition away from working harder to working smarter, WITHOUT THE GUILT OF LEAVING OTHERS BEHIND. THAT'S THE HARDEST PART. SEMPER FI! * My Stepmom served in the marines.
@@francisconti9085 I concur. I’ve also encountered individuals in their 40s and 50s who persistently behave as if they’re still in their 20s. The physical demands, excessive alcohol consumption, and intense emotional outbursts-all of these factors take a toll on the body’s ability to heal swiftly as it once did. I’ve included emotions in this discussion because they play a significant role in our overall well-being.
@ProJanitor You ARE on to something there..our nation has a severe en masse emotional crisis ongoing, along with the verified mental health crisis on the care side..
I found a 4.4 lb barbell weight a week ago.. it was a bitch to carry home in a backpack uphill and down for 2 blocks! It needs to be padded especially for lower back unless I can sling it! Hey I’m 62 and ex Tanker.. so it’s a bit light 😅 God left me it & even had Yank measurement! I knew it wasn’t be something easy. Gosh diggity dam 🫡👍

What about a 8-pound sledgehammer
Elite paramilitary organization: Eagle Scout
haha I just realized this was a Red Dawn reference. Sounded totally random at first.
My son was an eagle scout. I talked im out of going ranger. I'm 20 years army, and didn't want to worry about him 24/7
They are always prepared
All legit advice. Especially the part that teaches us to yeet a dumbbell at a bear. I’m glad I stayed until the end.
The beauty of living in Idaho is that you can just skip the weight and carry your actual rifle.
Glad I live in Idaho😊
@@nathanmoore8995 i ruck in a city park so the weight will be useful

I love this channel
Thanks
I agree. I'm always excited to see what's next. Keep it going
I'm mid-60's now, but when I used to deer hunt, I'd prepare for deer season by hiking with a 10 pound dumbell in hand.

Damn, calling out GoRuck, well done.
I haven't done this yet but it looks fun! As soon I saw the wait it clicked. That's the weight of an M4. Hope you are doing well sir!
I carry an industrial tire jack because I wanna be a 240 gunner 😂
Also the weight of a gallon of most liquids, roughly.
@@davidoftheforest 🤣
I carry a 6.5 pound mace to simulate a rifle
Probably better cause it’s uneven
Even if your serious your comment made me laugh out loud by just visualizing it. 😂

Your channel should be part of the mandatory requirements for high school graduates. A must !!!

This channel is better than bacon!
😂
@FictionCautious - You should be ashamed of yourself!!!!
Now that I'm retired I carry a carved walking stick and take rocks out of my boots when I want to.
That's privilege right there
Great tip!
Uh oh. All I heard in my head was "It's not a suitcase handle!!!!"
What he should say is this. It helps build muscle around your neck and shoulders.

Knew there was some reason I bought a set of cheap 8-bound dumbbells from TJ Max a couple of years ago….
And it has been there on the floor for years. I know the feeling. All those years lost and if you had worked out at least 10 minutes a day, today you would have been ripped.
For instance, if you put 5kgs iron weights on barbell is much heavier than putting 5kgs rubber weights on barbell

Pound 8 equal approx 3.5kg, I have 2 small iron dumbbell I use to shadow box, each dumbbell approx 2kgs, so both dumbbell 8 pound
Have you been to the Green Beret Subreddit? I think you will also be an amazing member to guide the younger ones who are pursuing to be a green beret
Thanks for sharing. Respectfully, Justilian Nathaniel Marshall
When you lift one hand metal dumbbell and other hand plastic dumbbell, their noticeable differences
Old dumbbells and gym machine was better and heavier than modern plastic production, because old one was mostly iron metal equipment
Thank you😺👍
So, I will use same shadow box dumbbells to ruck with it, I can put it inside a bag or just hold and walk with it
No need for dumbbells. A gallon of water is about 8 pounds..
And water is very, drinkable.
I have 20 kg Body Overweight
I Ruck myself day and night - feel GREAT as Bio Rucker. Ruck Yourself!
Their is difference between iron metal dumbbells and plastic like rubbery dumbbells, the iron metal dumbbells is heavier and better than plastic colorful dumbbells
A long piece of wood weighing the same...add a little grip on there. Boom makeshift M6 Tree
I also carry a short staff. About the right weight and length
I took a 5 foot length of black iron pipe. Put red and white reflective tape for nighttime safety. Can come in handy as walking staff and critter protection if necessary.
Fix bayonets!

The new M5 is closer to 10
When did Humpin’ become Rucking?
A gallon of water is 8 lbs
imperial "gallon was defined as equal in volume to *10 pounds* avoirdupois of distilled water weighed at 62 °F", If you mean customary gallon it's about 8.34 pound
You should use a 10lb weight in case they hand you a new M7 rifle.😊
Cast iron skillet
Don't just carry the weight on one side. Switch sides.
👍
No thank you - I prefer to preserve the longevity of my joints. 😃
