Good to know about "Mande." I picked this up when studying in Mexico City in the 1970s. I recently used it to reply to some Colombians, and they laughed and told me that "mande" was outdated and subservient. I didn't believe them, and it's nice to have you confirm that it is still in use. It is so much classier than "What?"

A few weeks ago, I was speaking to a young Mexican, and either he or I used "Mande!" and he gave me the impression that the expression (literally, "Command me!") is still in use. I must remember to ask other Mexicans I meet about this.

Teachers, adult men, and women, as well as my friend's moms always say to me "Do not say the word 'usted', it makes me feel old, talk to me as 'tú'"... I still think I do a good first impression by being polite but since I was a little girl, grown adults correct me ... I see it getting lost, definitely :s
Oh my god, the oven one 😂 My husband is Mexican and his sister was helping us move into our new place, she asked if I wanted my cookie trays in the oven, and I said yes thinking she meant the little pull out area at the bottom of the oven - nooooope found out there hard way that they and various other cooking items were IN the oven when I smoke started to emerge from it when I was preheating it!!!
I live in Suriname - South America and here we use the trick of the imaginary rock too! Works every time. To calm the nerves we drink water with sugar. This was a fun video.

My neighbors don’t even know that their estufa has a horno underneath. It’s just a storage space. I’ve also seen full size “cabinet” stoves for sale that completely lack baking capability. There’s just a door.

I had to laugh when I saw you bring out all those pots/pans from the oven because YES, that is what the oven is used for in MX. Imagine how surprised my sobrina was when I brought a stove/oven from the U.S. (because I do use the oven for baking!) that had the traditional oven with the storage drawer below it--for what else--YES the extra pans we need to store--she knew immediately that I had brought it from the U.S. because it's nowhere to be found in MX (at least so far)!!

Karen, I live in San Antonio Texas and Everything you said is true, my mother would be insulted if we ever said QUE?, it was instilled in our minds that Mande was the proper way to respond. I did everything like the magic rock, our oven was full of pots and pans and we always ran to the corner store to buy Pan de Dulce and Bolillos, but I was surprised to see a round Bolillo from Mexico, because ours are like a food all. Then I saw the Display of bolillos filled with stuff and I knew something was wrong with the bolillo you had in your hand. Great joke, you got my attention. I love those videos that reminds me of my abuelos in Mexico and my parents. Did your abuelita ever throw a Chancla at you when you were a child? Jajaja
@@LaKarencitaMX Had an idea what the word "chancla" meant and I looked it up to verify. Sure enough, it meant "slippers." Funny because in the Philippines where I partly grew up, if you did something bad, it would be either the "tsinelas" [slippers] or "sinturon" [belt] on your butt! LOL! BTW, even though no one taught me, I discovered on my own that when a dog comes barking at you, all you have to do is go down to your knees and pretend you're picking up a rock and it will run away! Very interesting and informative videos you've got there hija [a Spanish derivative word in the Philippines that has now come to mean "young girl" or "young lady" rather than the original "daughter"]! Lots of similarities between Mexican and Filipino culture and even language due to both being colonies of Spain in the past. FYI, I am half-Japanese and half-Filipino, but grew into adulthood in the Philippines so my mentality is more Filipino. And like many, when I first came across you on YT, I was positive you were Pinay [Filipino slang for a female Filipina]!

Very enjoyable video as always, Karencita. About "mande", it sounds much more polite than just saying "que?". I don't feel it gives a feeling of being subservient, it's just a polite way of letting someone know you heard them, or asking someone to repeat something.
I laughed when I first saw you talking about the magic bolillo......until I realised we are exactly the same with tea. Upset? have a cup of tea, in shock? have a cup of tea (prob with lots of sugar), someone died, definitely have lots of cups of tea, as soon as someone enters your home? offer a cup of tea. Tea is just as magical as as a bolillo
I loved your video! My husband is from Mexico so I have seen some of the things you have mentioned, very true! Are you familiar with using Vicks vapor rub on the bottoms of your feet when you're sick? My husband always did this when our kids were sick, kinda weird, but I've heard of other Mexicans doing this also.
The oven storage is an Asian thing too! It happens in my household, but when I was single I actually used mine as intended. I got married, & my wife does the same thing at our place. I go visit my place, which my mom took over, she uses the oven as storage too!😂

The norm: Toddler stumbles and falls. Scraped and bleeding tot looks up at mom, aunt or older sister to check reaction; care giver and any companions erupt with profuse clapping and "Bravo mami/papi", but make no move towards child. Eventually, the young adventurer gets the face and any abrasions wiped down -- but no hurry. Oh yes -- not once did the child cry.
American ExPat living in Baja CA for over 3 and half years now. It drives me nuts when my nieghbors or others a couple of blocks around, don't seem to be disturbed by the incessant barking of dogs in and around the neighborhood. I've managed to change that at least with my closest nieghbor's dog.
This video reminded me of my grandma. When she would come to visit us in the states we knew better not to say que. lol. I was a tomboy as a kid. So I had many accidents and there was grandma with a bullio. She used to make them from scratch. Thank you Karen. Enjoy your Sunday.

I knew that not a bolillio in the Beginning but I was beginning to know that depending where you are in Mexico the shape can differ. I always referred to it as "Pan de Torta" but I have had tortas made with both kinds of the bread. To me the taste of the bread was the same and fully stuffed the rounder bread was less messy. My favorite is the Torta Cubana. My second fave is fully of Oxaca cheese, aquacate, & Carne de Trompo. Of course syncronizadas are excellent too.
The thing about the Imaginary rock I had seen before but in one Colonia in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon I saw lots of kids walking with sticks. When a barking dog came close they would raise the stick & swing towards the dog. The swoosh sound must of terrified the dogs. Especially when several children all with sticks did the same thing. Laughter usually ensued after the dog turned tail & ran.
I grew up in South Texas, and have spent alot of time in Northern Mexico. You have excellent insights of what its like to grow up Mexican! Thank you Karenita for sharing aspects our proud heritage!

The panaderías we went to had biriote AND bolillos... two different typesd of bread. Bolillos were lighter with a crispier crust, Birotes more dense with more flexible crust. P.s. I grew up in Los Ángeles, CA, USA
They're similar but they're different types of bread. Birotes are for "tortas ahogadas", the bread is a little bit harder so it doesn't crumble when it's drown in sauce. Bolillos are lighter and crispier

I had long forgotten about the dog tactic and gesture. You're right, Mexicans always use it and it works!! As for de bolillo. When I saw yours, I thought it was the bolillo of northern part of our country. I read that they call it differently,.but that it's the same thing, only that you get two pieces in one. I forget what they call it. I didn't realized it was a telera. I'm an awful Mexican, as I don't use the word "Mandé". I say "perdón" for excuse me. "Ya voy"when mom calls me. I lived in Costa Rica for many years and the dog's there really freaked me out. Their owners would let them out especially in the morning so they could do their business. I would go out and walk for exercise and the dogs wer always bothering me. One morning I noticed that the kids going to school we'll just pick up a rock and throw it at the dogs and they would scramble. Sometimes there were no rocks available, and like you the kids just bent down and pretended to grab a rock and the dogs scattered. I think maybe the school kids train the dogs to be wary about humans throwing rocks from then on I just pretended to pick up a rock and the dogs always ran away. LOL!
Random reactions: I was once walking on a rural road on the way to Xochicalco and got pursued by an aggressive pack of wild dogs. I had to throw REAL rocks at those S.O.B.s. I was once insulted by a Chilena for saying "¿Mande?" She said it showed how servile Mexicans were. My mother and grandmother had fingers of asbestos for flipping tortillas with their bare hands. I drive my wife nuts storing things in the oven. And finally, growing up, "bolillos" were white people. Love your videos.
In the Southern United States, it is also considered rude to say “what?” or “huh?” especially to an adult or respected person. It’s more polite to say, “ma’am?” or “sir?” However, people from other parts of the US sometimes become offended or believe we are calling them old.
Well, that was fun. When I was small and stumbles or fell and hurt myself my mom would say: 'Did you hurt the ground? Did you say you were sorry you did that?'
Every time my mother has Cash She goes to the bakery and buys Bolillo, we can use it as breakfast dinner or Just a snack for the night, and since I almost eat them every week, it does give you a better sleep after an hour of eating it of course, it makes your stomach full, you can use ham, Beans, eggs, maybe make it to a torta, there’s a lot of stuff that you can put on bolillo (Sorry for my grammar and English, I’m not very good 😅)
Another thing I forgot to mention. I don't know if this is unique to Mexico, but I have noticed how Mexicans sit on the hoods of other people's cars. This first happened to me just south of the border. I was waiting inside my car and two men sat on my hood. I was initially shocked, but realized this was just a natural part of the culture. When I was ready to leave I was going to "honk" so that they would get off my hood. However, I didn't do m this as I assumed it would upset them. I just turned on the motor and they got off.
I work with a lot of people from Mexico and Central America and I have heard them say, "Mande?" a lot. I never realized that that is what I should be saying, instead of, "Que?" Thank you Karencita. I learned something from this video.

Wooow, I never thought about what "Mande" means, or that it could be weird for other spanish speakers, or that it sounded submissive! But it's so true, I even say "mande usted" lmaooo. Although I usually only use "mande", "mande usted" is mostly when I don't understand what someone said and it seems like a polite way of asking them to repeat themselves.

I walk dogs for a living… I would never do what you suggested but I understand its your culture. I would cross my hands or put my hands on hips. And turn my back. If a dog is being aggressive the worst thing you can do is give them direct eye contact. They read energy just be confident hold your head help up high and don’t look at them and they should back off.
I thought the oven thing was just something specific to my boyfriend's family lol. when I wanted to bake his aunt had to take all the pans and plates out of the oven. thinking about it, i have only ever seen her use the hob and never the oven lol.
Mom visited a few weeks ago, and she likes to clean even if things aren’t messy. Next day I started my oven to roast fish and my efficiency apartment began to stink of plastic…also; I think you should do more “re-enactments” of Mexican life, like the magic rock..😂
When I started watching this vid, I thought: mmmhh that place looks like Queretaro city, and I was pleasantly surprised that it is actually Queretaro! I was born there and I love that city so much!
Are you from Central - Southern Mexico? 1. Dogs - In northern Mexico, we only see dogs in a leash. 2. Mande? - We usually say "Cómo?/Perdón?" or "No te escuché?" 3. Ovens - Who doesn't use an oven? 4. bolillo - Is this Pan Frances? This is eaten in almost all of Mexico; in tortas, Menudo, Soups, etc. Okay, you're from Central Mexico. :) I love Queretaro! I just want to suggest that you provide more in-depth details in your videos, so that people have a better understanding of our country's culture... You can also gain more viewers who are looking for specific parts of Mexico :) Win-Win 🏆 😊

Being in Merida, the strangest thing i see is that people spend lots of time mopping the tile where they park the car behind the gate, but don't cut the weeds regularly by the curb. I am not afraid of the dogs because they all speak English. In Spanish each vowel is pronounced. The dog sound "woof" has two vowels. If the dogs spoke spanish they would say "wo-of" in two syllables. They don't but use the one syllable english pronunciation "woof." I just tell the dogs in english that I will hurt them if they mess with me. They understand and leave me alone.😊😊
Disculpeme Srta., you forgot to mention 1.Passing cars or trucks on blind curves (common). 2.Two vehicles playing 'chicken' on the road (not so common but does happen several times a year, usually between trucks or busses. 3. Years ago a wise man taught me to avoid fights by telling the one trying to incite "i didn't hear that.' Usually they would not repeat it. Mande is the imperitive of Mandar - to send. Mande = send or really re-send. Even when i really don't hear i reply 'Mande.' Castillian es muy cortés. But don't expect Cortez to be cortés, as Moctezuma learned too late.

Very enjoyable video as always, Karencita. About "mande", it sounds much more polite than just saying "que?". I don't feel it gives a feeling of being subservient, it's just a polite way of letting someone know you heard them, or asking someone to repeat something.

I laughed when I first saw you talking about the magic bolillo......until I realised we are exactly the same with tea. Upset? have a cup of tea, in shock? have a cup of tea (prob with lots of sugar), someone died, definitely have lots of cups of tea, as soon as someone enters your home? offer a cup of tea. I loved your video! My husband is from Mexico so I have seen some of the things you have mentioned, very true! Are you familiar with using Vicks vapor rub on the bottoms of your feet when you're sick? My husband always did this when our kids were sick, kinda weird, but I've heard of other Mexicans doing this also.
The oven storage is an Asian thing too! It happens in my household, but when I was single I actually used mine as intended. I got married, & my wife does the same thing at our place. I go visit my place, which my mom took over, she uses the oven as storage too!😂

This had me laughing! My ex-husband is Mexican and his whole family has always just laughed at people when they get hurt. Especially kids. As a way to, I guess, develop thick skin. But, handing you a bolillo after you were literally hit by a car?!? 🤣🤣🤣 That’s a new one for me! Love your videos. We’re moving to Mazatlan in August. Can’t wait! 😁
The norm: Toddler stumbles and falls. Scraped and bleeding tot looks up at mom, aunt or older sister to check reaction; care giver and any companions erupt with profuse clapping and "Bravo mami/papi", but make no move towards child. Eventually, the young adventurer gets the face and any abrasions wiped down -- but no hurry. Oh yes -- not once did the child cry.
American ExPat living in Baja CA for over 3 and half years now. It drives me nuts when my nieghbors or others a couple of blocks around, don't seem to be disturbed by the incessant barking of dogs in and around the neighborhood. I've managed to change that at least with my closest nieghbor's dog.

This video reminded me of my grandma. When she would come to visit us in the states we knew better not to say que. lol. I was a tomboy as a kid. So I had many accidents and there was grandma with a bullio. She used to make them from scratch.

I knew that not a bolillio in the Beginning but I was beginning to know that depending where you are in Mexico the shape can differ. I always referred to it as "Pan de Torta" but I have had tortas made with both kinds of the bread. To me the taste of the bread was the same and fully stuffed the rounder bread was less messy.
My favorite is the Torta Cubana. My second fave is fully of Oxaca cheese, aquacate, & Carne de Trompo. Of course syncronizadas are excellent too.
The thing about the Imaginary rock I had seen before but in one Colonia in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon I saw lots of kids walking with sticks. When a barking dog came close they would raise the stick & swing towards the dog. The swoosh sound must of terrified the dogs. Especially when several children all with sticks did the same thing. Laughter usually ensued after the dog turned tail & ran.
When I hear mande from t sounds like Monday. And the only thing I know about Bolillo is that’s what my Mexican friends called me 🤣😂

I know that the name bolillo is used in many parts of Mexico but in Guadalajara they call it birote.
The panaderías we went to had biriote AND bolillos... two different typesd of bread. Bolillos were lighter with a crispier crust, Birotes more dense with more flexible crust.
P.s. I grew up in Los Ángeles, CA, USA
They're similar but they're different types of bread. Birotes are for "tortas ahogadas", the bread is a little bit harder so it doesn't crumble when it's drown in sauce. Bolillos are lighter and crispier

As for de bolillo. When I saw yours, I thought it was the bolillo of northern part of our country. I read that they call it differently,.but that it's the same thing, only that you get two pieces in one. I forget what they call it. I didn't realized it was a telera.

I lived in Costa Rica for many years and the dog's there really freaked me out. Their owners would let them out especially in the morning so they could do their business. I would go out and walk for exercise and the dogs wer always bothering me.
One morning I noticed that the kids going to school we'll just pick up a rock and throw it at the dogs and they would scramble. Sometimes there were no rocks available, and like you the kids just bent down and pretended to grab a rock and the dogs scattered.
I think maybe the school kids train the dogs to be wary about humans throwing rocks from then on I just pretended to pick up a rock and the dogs always ran away. LOL!
Random reactions: I was once walking on a rural road on the way to Xochicalco and got pursued by an aggressive pack of wild dogs. I had to throw REAL rocks at those S.O.B.s. I was once insulted by a Chilena for saying "¿Mande?" She said it showed how servile Mexicans were. My mother and grandmother had fingers of asbestos for flipping tortillas with their bare hands. I drive my wife nuts storing things in the oven. And finally, growing up, "bolillos" were white people. Love your videos.

In the Southern United States, it is also considered rude to say “what?” or “huh?” especially to an adult or respected person. It’s more polite to say, “ma’am?” or “sir?” However, people from other parts of the US sometimes become offended or believe we are calling them old.
That standard applies to the whole of the USA, not just the South. Saying "what?" just seems rude to me...Seattle, USA.

Well, that was fun. When I was small and stumbles or fell and hurt myself my mom would say: 'Did you hurt the ground? Did you say you were sorry you did that?'
Every time my mother has Cash She goes to the bakery and buys Bolillo, we can use it as breakfast dinner or Just a snack for the night, and since I almost eat them every week, it does give you a better sleep after an hour of eating it of course, it makes your stomach full, you can use ham, Beans, eggs, maybe make it to a torta, there’s a lot of stuff that you can put on bolillo

Another thing I forgot to mention. I don't know if this is unique to Mexico, but I have noticed how Mexicans sit on the hoods of other people's cars. This first happened to me just south of the border. I was waiting inside my car and two men sat on my hood. I was initially shocked, but realized this was just a natural part of the culture.
When I was ready to leave I was going to "honk" so that they would get off my hood. However, I didn't do m this as I assumed it would upset them. I just turned on the motor and they got off.

Wooow, I never thought about what "Mande" means, or that it could be weird for other spanish speakers, or that it sounded submissive!
But it's so true, I even say "mande usted" lmaooo. Although I usually only use "mande", "mande usted" is mostly when I don't understand what someone said and it seems like a polite way of asking them to repeat themselves.
Cuando era un niño en San Antonio Texas (un ciudad muy mexicano en EEUU), mi papá a me aconsejó para hacer la misma cosa sobre la piedra imaginario 😂 (hay muchos perros en las calles, a me aparece como Mexico)
Y también, mi tía a me aviso a nunca decir “what” o “que” y de vez usar “mande.”

I walk dogs for a living… I would never do what you suggested but I understand its your culture. I would cross my hands or put my hands on hips. And turn my back. If a dog is being aggressive the worst thing you can do is give them direct eye contact. They read energy just be confident hold your head help up high and don’t look at them and they should back off.
I thought the oven thing was just something specific to my boyfriend's family lol. when I wanted to bake his aunt had to take all the pans and plates out of the oven. thinking about it, i have only ever seen her use the hob and never the oven lol.

Mom visited a few weeks ago, and she likes to clean even if things aren’t messy. Next day I started my oven to roast fish and my efficiency apartment began to stink of plastic…also; I think you should do more “re-enactments” of Mexican life, like the magic rock..😂

Are you from Central - Southern Mexico?
1. Dogs - In northern Mexico, we only see dogs in a leash.
2. Mande? - We usually say "Cómo?/Perdón?" or "No te escuché?"
3. Ovens - Who doesn't use an oven?
4. bolillo - Is this Pan Frances? This is eaten in almost all of Mexico; in tortas, Menudo, Soups, etc.

Being in Merida, the strangest thing i see is that people spend lots of time mopping the tile where they park the car behind the gate, but don't cut the weeds regularly by the curb.
I am not afraid of the dogs because they all speak English. In Spanish each vowel is pronounced. The dog sound "woof" has two vowels. If the dogs spoke spanish they would say "wo-of" in two syllables. They don't but use the one syllable english pronunciation "woof."
I just tell the dogs in english that I will hurt them if they mess with me. They understand and leave me alone.😊😊
Disculpeme Srta., you forgot to mention 1.Passing cars or trucks on blind curves (common). 2.Two vehicles playing 'chicken' on the road (not so common but does happen several times a year, usually between trucks or busses. 3. Mande = send or really re-send. Even when i really don't hear i reply 'Mande.' Castillian es muy cortés.
But don't expect Cortez to be cortés, as Moctezuma learned too late.

I don't know about invisible rocks. I lived in Central America and when we came in contact with stray dogs we used real rocks. The bigger the better.
