    Omg!! I live in SoCal too!!! I just lost my job due to covid. I was a Senior Event Manager for Marriott. I worked for 15 years and have done every type of event, social, corporate, weddings. Outside catering weddings etc. I have decided to use my job loss and start my own event planning business. It so weird but even though I have so much experience with the hotel event planning experience I am so nervous and don’t know where to start with my own business. I am watching all your videos and look forward to making this happen even through covid. Hope all is well!

Or you can start volunteering to plan your close ones events. My guide is helpful for getting your. business started from the ground up, links are in the bio! 💕

    Girl!!! The rude and needy clients!!!! Like you said, I mostly get amazing clients but I’m dealing with a doozy right now.
    I’m looking into incorporating corporate events into my business. Have you thought of doing that?

    • @BashBesties
      @BashBesties  5 лет назад +9

      Same, most of my clients are a dream, but occasionally you’ll get the doozy like you said...that you probably knew you shouldn’t have booked in the first place 😩😂 Isn’t it funny how you can usually spot them right off the bat by their tone, questions, or mannerisms. I’ve learned to spot them ahead of time and I’m like “Thank you for your inquiry, but I’m not taking on any more clients at this time.” Occasionally one slips through, I had one last year and I refunded her deposit and cordially sent her on her way. I appreciate and treat equally all my prospective clients, but I just can’t deal with those that don’t respect me, my business, or my craft.... You better get them corporate checks sis!! Yasss!!🙌🏼🙌🏼 Girl I have thought, I get inquiries and the budgets are insane sometimes. 😮 I turn most down because I’m focusing on this side of my business right now and perfecting my children’s one so that hopefully it can almost run on autopilot someday soon. I’m a perfectionist and a stress ball so I can’t juggle too many major career changes at once without losing my mind 🤦🏽‍♀️🤣

    I see everyone saying that it takes up so much of your time, and you don't get to spend it with family. I just started my business and I must have started it in the OFF season because I haven't had a single client yet...I get discouraged some days, but then I am just eager to start lol. I just opened this month, so I am trying to stay positive and work on my stationary, I have a website and business cards, made socials for the business and just wish I could book someone soon. How long did it take to book your first client??

      Yes, I believe a lot of people have the same experience! I think everyone doesn't really realize how much they'll be giving up or how not being able to attend family events and important occasions really effect them until they're already in it. I'm right there with you, I love events, but the commitment is heavy. Hope you were able to find your second passion since then! ❤

  • @sarahberkner

    I think some people are not cut out to be event planners because they just are unable to plan things ahead and they take things one day at a time (related to the second one) or they are not very detail-oriented. More long-term planning is difficult for me but I'm working on it. It's best to work backwards from the event and decide when different things need to be done so that everything is done on time, and allow yourself extra time in case things go wrong.

    Thank you for sharing. I started a year ago as a mobile bar and event staffing company. Now its turned into event planning I wound up hiring people out of pity or desperation and basically started every event with a nervous breakdown. I have definitely gotten better at hiring but after last year it was hard to trust people.
    I have one client who haggles me on my prices all the time. However, she has brought me a lot of clients and she has booked me for her next 3 events but I have a hard time with discussing my price and my ext event is a fundraiser for her friend. Essentially her friend wants to spend as little money as possible but already they are complaining about the prices to rent a canopy and chairs. I need some advice on what i am supposed to be charging for a non profit fundraiser and how to stay firm. I am way to emotionally attached to my price and she knows it.Please HELP!

    • @BashBesties
      @BashBesties  5 лет назад +1

      Hello Olivia,
      Oh wow, I know the feeling. It happens and especially in your line of staffing it's almost inevitable, especially in a time crunch or large events and you just need someone, anyone. I think it's definitely just going to take time for you learn from every event and to perfect your hiring system and screening process that works for you!
      Hmm that's a hard one. It really comes down to whether you feel like she as a client is benefiting you enough to keep working with her or is the stress and effort just not worth it. I don't particularly work with penny pinching clients anymore, it's way too much stress and end the end I just don't feel compensated. I have a set starting price listed on my website and I don't offer discounts or change pricing anymore. I used to get suckered into letting people negotiate because I wanted to book them, and they often took advantage. When people ask now if they can I say no, many will not book, and some end up booking anyway they were just trying to see if they could get it for cheaper. So, you really have to ask yourself what you want and what you're willing to put up with. If she's booking with you and sending you a lot of business in my opinion I may think about working with her, but adjusting what you can offer her for that price as your business is growing and therefore pricing must be adjusted to be able to offer a better service. If you want to charge her a little less because she keeps coming back to you I don't think there is anything wrong with that. BUT I would NOT NOT NOT NOT be giving her "friends" the same discount. They should be paying your standard rate for their first event. The times I've helped out with non-profit fundraisers I was giving my services as a donation, so I'm not sure what you're supposed to be charging. You'll have to do some research with that online as it pertains to your area you live in. But I do know that non-profits can often have more money at their disposal for events than even regular clients, there's often a lot of funds as they are still a business. Ask them what they want, what is there budget, decide how much time and effort it will take you to do the party and come up with a figure you're happy doing all that work for, then tell them what they can get for the remainder of the budget. You can do it girl, don't let people walk over you, stand firm in the work that you put out and know that you need to be compensated for that work!

      Thank you! I needed that. I learned a lot from this event and I think you are right, ABSOLUTELY NO DISCOUNTS! Every time I regret it and my cheap clients end up not respecting me. I did the event for the no. Profit and even though I it great my client was not appreciative and almost forgot to introduce me as the one who planned the event. He is now refusing to pay me for items I bought for the event. I’m not even going to stress but I’m done with those people. Thank you for the advice. It’s definitely a learning process. I’ll be posting about the experience on my channel soon. :)

    i gave up event planning 10 years ago. it was the best decision of my life. Sure, the money is good but the stress and anxiety is not worth it. 80% of clients are rude and throw tantrums if they don't get their way. They also watch you like a hawk 24/7 to ensure that every detail is done OVER and above their already strenuous expectations. The very last event i planned, the client got mad when i forgot the candles. I rang the client and argued with them saying "that's whats you get if you don't tip. Pay peanuts and you get peanuts.'' This enraged them. Had to laugh. It was the end of 12 years of stress for me!

    • @BashBesties
      @BashBesties  4 года назад +1

      I completely understand what you’re saying. I do believe that although anyone can plan or learn to plan actual events, a career in event planning is just not sustainable mentally for everyone, (especially if you run a small business and not a firm with a lot of help). I try to offer people the tips on how to create a business that works with their passions and lifestyles so that they don’t run into the kinds of issues you described repeatedly and get discouraged, but as you know well running into problem clients is inevitable.
      People have to know what’s right for their soul, glad you were able to make the decision that was right for your happiness and mental health!

The amount of stress and anxiety you experience, hard work during set ups and breakdown, hours on the road at times and clients who refuse to pay is enough for me to give it up. Will event management will work after the covid 19 thing?

    • @BashBesties
      @BashBesties  3 года назад +1

      Yes of course, COVID 19 will pass eventually. Just because people haven’t been able to have in person events it doesn’t mean they don’t want to..there will always be a job for event planners it may just look different in the future. Now event managers in business settings may be a little different and many businesses will probably keep with the virtual aspect as they’ve done during COVID for the most part from here on out. But that doesn’t mean there’s not a place or need for an event manager within the new post COVID event space either.

    🤔 I've helped with two weddings but this is something I thought I'd grow up to do.... I'm on the fence I want to make beautiful events but for like three years I'm undecided. (the weddings I did were exhausting and I kind of hated it, but the potential greatness keeps me wondering...) Possibly going into finance and just host parties. Idk 😐

    • @BashBesties
      @BashBesties  5 лет назад +3

      Well, the best thing you can do if you're unsure is research and experimenting. You are already doing both, so you're on the right track! I think the potential to create amazing events is what keeps a lot of people fantasizing about being an event planner. (Myself included.) If I'm honest with myself, I have a love/hate relationship with my profession. I love planning, decorating, and creating and the end result. I hate the level of stress it causes me and weekends away from my family. So, what I've done is started to tailor my business and my profession as a whole to what I feel comfortable more with and what makes me happy. Not what I'm required to be by industry or society standards. I'm building my own event planning career! I always dream of doing amazing high end luxury events with big budgets like you see all over Pinterest, but then I think about the amount of time and stress that would be to produce an event like that, and it steers me away every time. So, you have to decide what makes you happy in this industry if you choose to pursue it! Maybe it's taking smaller scale social events, rather than weddings. Maybe it's being a part time planner, taking only 1 or 2 events a month, or every other month. Just enough to explore your creative outlet and/or bring in a little extra cash. Just know that you can be whatever kind of planner you want! Best wishes!

    Question: how does vacation work for you?

    • @BashBesties
      @BashBesties  2 года назад +1

      It doesn’t 😆...no but seriously I usually take time off during the holidays. I have children so sometimes I must take time off because they are home on vacation from school, but I usually just fit time like that in on the fly. Taking a vacation has never been made a priority for me, which is why I used to experience a lot of. burnout and get really stressed out. Now I’m more selective of the parties I take on, so I’m able to squeeze in time off and usually take longer “vacation” breaks during the holiday season because generally client requests slow down then anyways.

      I think in this business taking a vacation is totally necessary and worth scheduling out. The nice thing is it is a more flexible career and there is the opportunity to do so since you make your own calendar. It’s just a lot of times you might schedule something and then a client calls for that exact date and you may not want to pass up the money or the opportunity. You just have to make sure to let them know you’re unavailable. For me sometimes in the past I’d just cancel my time off and take the party...which can be really bad for your mental health. In this industry it’s really important to take time off when you need it especially if you’re running a small biz where everything lands on you. 😊

    Does event manager plan event in another country?

    • @BashBesties
      @BashBesties  2 года назад

      A lot of times here in the US we interchange or combine event planner with other event roles, but an event manager by definition wouldn’t be the one planning the actual event but overseeing it. 💖

      Industry professionals will understand the point of the video on another level and it’s meant to give a clear idea of the cons that arise working in this field using my personal examples. Many people who aren’t in the industry assume it’s very glamorous, but as you mentioned it’s very hard work and not everyone can handle the cons of it once they start. There’s definitely pros, but that’s not what this particular video is about. Thank you for understanding the true meaning behind it @onenighttoremember ! 💕
