After watching this video several times, I now know how they keep the SPT control room warm. Ignoring all of the heat generated by the racks of computers and other misc equipment, the Dell UltraSharp U2711 monitor shown between 00:38 and 00:42, doubles as a very effective heater. I have two of these monitors connected to one of my Linux systems and they generate enough heat to increase the ambient temperature in my 120 sqft office by 10-15 degrees, with the door closed and ceiling fan running.
Great interview! It's nice to learn a little more about the science and research that happens down at the station! It's also cool to see all of these amazing women doing awesome things there!
Your videos remind me of my life on the “Bold Pacific” a 60 ft long liner based in Kodiak, it was 1988 and I can still see the Aurora so vividly , and Blue Whales hurtling upwards out of the Bering Sea, and the camaraderie of the crew. Much Gratitude!

I was wondering if you could provide any information regarding the best way to apply for positions that directly support the SPT, IceCube, or BICEP. I have over 30 years of IT experience and a profound interest in astronomy and cosmology, so this would be an opportunity of a lifetime. I have already applied for several technical and non-technical positions through Leidos, GHG, GSC, and PAE, but have yet to find a way to apply for scientific support positions which do not require a Masters degree or PHD.
Wish me luck, I just submitted my application for a Winterover Experiment Operator position at the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. Still trying to find a similar open position for the SPT.

I am a Registered Nurse. This year I turned 60- yeah, I think climbing Everest would have been neat- years ago. Kind of like the way I would like to experience neg 55 degrees at the South Pole. Nah. You get to the point of when to say when. WHEN. (I was a traveling nurse and I go be the first aid nurse at camps in the mountains-McCall Idaho.) I did travel nursing in my 20's. Still adventurous, but now, I "car camp". Meaning that I am enjoying your videos and what it would have been like- I am traveling, still a little in person, but the extreme stuff, I travel through you tube. :) BUT, I would like to ask--- you are a physicians Assistant. Do you have to be a PA, or can you be a Registered Nurse? I remember a few years back---- someone got really sick and had to wait until they could be flown out. I watched your tour of the station. You have a treatment room and a inpatient room. Can you do simple surgeries if something comes up---- like a Appy that is on the verge of rupturing? You have AED's- if someone has a heart attack and needs an invasive procedure, do any of the other stations (Murdo) have the ability or do you just have to get them outta there? If I was a young nurse- a smart nurse- an independent strong willed nurse (I like having a back up- up in Idaho, I have the fire dept and the hospital close by) - but, years ago, how would I have applied to be down there? How did you get on to be down there? It is cool how you can walk around the world. :) Dee ---- be safe.
Would be great for any non science person like myself to hang out with scientist to see up close what and how their physics is applied to practical use, thanks.

It's great she got to have such a unique experience at the South Pole in her career field, but this whole 'first (non white male)' stuff has to go in the bin. She is a qualified scientist and in the higher scientific fields, no one cares if you pee sitting down. Would have liked a more personal introspection on the interviews, like their favorite food there, their favorite location, what they do to unwind, but the informative stuff was awesome too!

Didn't the patient have to self biopsy and send the sample for testing?
Dr. Jeri Nielson was an amazing woman. She survived the 1998 cancer scare, but it would return and she passed away at 57 in 2009.
