Edit: this experiment with limited commentary might be useful if the commentary isn't too redundant, which this first example borders on occasionally. Good idea, depends on implementation.
I agree....I don't mind the narration but I think just reading the banner is a little redundant and kind of boring ....maybe add a little extra something to make it more interesting. I do like that you're trying new things ....
@@bipedalprimate thats exactly what I did.. mute is a great option...I really prefer it the way it was but if they do the narration ... I think it should be more than just reading the banner
@@NASASpaceflight thanks for the reply and I am kinda sorry for not being able to be as appreciative like others... but thanks for the effort to trying new things and exploring options to give us choices! and of course thanks for the constant video update. I am no content creator so I only know something that resembles "alternative audio track" existed after a quick search, it seems there is an "audio description" feature, which is expanded from the "multiple language audio track" feature which is related to "subtitles". Good luck and keep up the good work!
I'm not a huge fan of with setup personally, it's just stuck between not being as relaxing as the videos without commentary, but the commentary is too short and barebones to really be useful. Either one or the other (or preferably both with daily videos and weekly/monthly narrated updates) would be much nicer.
I love this new format! I LISTEN to every NSF show at least twice but I only WATCH sporadically. The slower, calmer voiceover is pleasant and relaxing.
Prefer the old style without the voice-over. Without commentary it feels more peaceful and I actually like that I am not being spoon-fed a description of what appears on screen. The voice-over might be a useful thing for the visually impaired, but otherwise I feel that it actually makes these segments less appealing. I will be less likely to watch these if the voice-overs continue. I do like the ambient audio, but the additional readout of what already appears on screen seems superfluous and a bit annoying.
I feel the same. It was nice to just relax to the quiet sounds of construction, with the occasional sound of wind or sea birds. The voiceless clip compilations are really the only videos I'm subscribed to this channel for. Well, other than live launch coverage since spacex stopped broadcasting on youtube.
THANKYOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! I've been wanting some narration to the videos...I like having them on the side of my work and listen - glancing when something interesting comes up. The quiet videos just require too much attention.
I think the commentary should make use (if its still a thing) the multi audio tracks for videos so we could listen to either just the normal audio for the updates or use the audio with the commentary
Based on this video's content, i would vote no for this style of commentary. It may work better for just the odd section where it requires more comment than the caption can give or to direct you attention to the specific item in the shot
2 comments. 1) I like commentary, but it should probably be things that the team sees, that most of us would miss. Things like "notice that something something is new or changed" or "well that seems strange". 2) I'd love to see the time stamps of when things were recorded, and to get a better sense of how long events took place after editing. This is the historical record for Starship evolution after all. Love all the work the team does, Thank You!
This was the main reason we thought we'd try it. With no voice, you can't really put a daily on the side and glance at it when it has something interesting. Looks like we're getting lots of feedback! - Das
I wonder, does youtube support multiple audio tracks? Then everyone could be happy. Personally I like daily updates without voiceover, makes me feel like I'm in Starbase myself
I think you should consider adding a timeline or progress bar that visually indicates when events occurred during the week. Just mentioning that something happened on a specific date isn’t as intuitive as seeing it represented visually. Alternatively, you could use a time-and-date clock that speeds up between clips. For example, during the removal of raptors from S26, this would give viewers a clearer sense of how much time passed between each removal.
Yes I like the explanation of all the things that are happening while time lapsed. I have a hard time watching the live in real time and some times I completely miss some of the stuff I want to watch
Most definitely like the limited voice over for the time lapse videos. It’s a good compromise for those who don’t want anyone talking and those that do. Thank you NSF.
To me it's not a compromise at all. This narration is redundant as it repeats the wording the description almost exactly. I like hearing the background ambient noise without any verbal narration. I predict that most people will agree with me.
First: thnx for all the content! .. i also don't like the voice "reading" the text .. the ambience is broken now .. doesn't feel good .. EDIT: tbh, i hate it. I don't need someone taking my hand while watching it .. EDIT 2: "let you play in the background and if you hear something interesting you can look.." .. no, most people do watch the videos. It's not played in the background. I mean, even IF someone did so, he/she did it, because of the ambient noise, which is now broken. There is no reason in this statement .. sorry, but i can't ..
I like the additional voice over. A bit easier to follow than having to read the text, especially since I’m not a native English speaker. ❤ May want to consider what to comment on at all and what to expand on (like, why something is done), but overall, like it.
Keep it up. It is a lot better and interesting then no commentary. I normally just skip through these videos, but actually watched all the way through.
a nice change for sure... not that i would ever look away from the screen, but it does make multi-tasking easier while catching up on favorite bits... go, das!
Nice format. Always appreciate Das tapping onto teacher mode. Sort of the flip side of the Flame Trench which I sometimes find tiring. Because sometimes - More Rails, More Better. Appreciate all of the NSF crew.
Thank you Das for this! Much easier than watching everyday and read all the labels and try to remember where everything is, and when it is. Please continue with this series!
I like the audio titles, I wouldn't call it commentary. It's good for those of us who play the video while doing something else. Watching ships, barell sections, tower moduls moved is kinda boring, but sometimes I'd like to see the other progress, and I often miss it if I am not sitting in front of it. And I used to back at the beginning but now lot of the stuff keeps repeating and it's not really that interesting. My vote is Yes.
If you're going to do commentary, then I like the "straight facts" style you have here. To me, it sounds more professional than the sometimes overhyped methods found elsewhere.
Just to elaborate, to my mind, there is no need to remove all emotion. Someone narrating calmly but enthusiastically is great! But no shouting, and everything doesn't need to be AWESOME, INSANE etc. all the time.
Like the limited narration. Maybe a little bit more, but not too much. Don't change the length of the video to allow for more narration, just little additional bits where it might help explain some activity that is going on. Keep Jack's humour.
I really like the narrative! I get the important details while working on a project and check out the visuals as needed. Excellent addition to the stream.
I think you need slightly more commentary than just the screen titles. What makes the commentary valuable is the additional context that it can provide .
Hey this is great! It could be a tad more descriptive, but as someone who mostly listens to RUclips while doing other things I think this is a great addition.
Personally I like it since I'm not always paying attention and it helps return focus if needed. And who doesn't like Das narration??❤this can definitely get fine tuned
Wow, this is much better with voiceover. I know that's extra work for you guys, but it's worth it. I usually skip ahead many times through this type of videos. This gives a better understanding of what we're seeing.
I liked the commentary. You could probably elaborate most points with an additional short sentence, e.g. when the sheet piles were installed at 1:06 another quick "sheet piles are used to... " would round it off nicely.
I have always believed in the policy of "If it isn't broken don't fix it". I have followed the NASA SF videos on starbase for four years and during that time most of the videos from this channel were without narration. The labels and short descriptions always seemed sufficient to inform viewers what was going on. And the vast majority of viewers seemed to support this mode of operation. Very few wanted an audio narration. The unnecessary narration seems even more clear when I see the narration essentially repeating the descriptive labels word for word. That is redundant, unnecessary and leaves less interested in continuing to follow the channel. I don't like to turn the sound off because I like the ambient sound as it is.

Yeah it would be good for like a very simplified thing about whats going on. Not a huge amount of info, just a quick half a liner thing about it
I had to mute it. A voice simply reading what's on the screen is just too close to a bad PowerPoint presentation and I get enough of that at work.
i want the raw undisturbed audio from the site
