I used to work on towers, and I’ve been in many lifts. 80’ lifts sway a good bit, once you get up to a 120’ they sway a lot, and then the biggest lifts are 180/185’ and man those sway A LOT. Like 15 feet side to side. If you touch the joystick to boom left or right at full height you will fly like 10-15’ and it’s terrifying. Also if you spend all day up on a manlift and then go to bed shortly after, it feels like you’re on a boat swaying in the ocean. A very weird feeling.
Ya i got my lesson with boom lifts i use to tease my coleagues when we were up near roof top or higher and to give them a little scare i use to nod the stick on purpose until i realized that it was'nt funny for. Well that was 25 years grew up now loll
When I was a kid I spent many summer days swimming in the ocean at Huntington Beach, California which is a world class surfing location (I never surfed though). Oftentimes when I went to bed that night I felt like the waves were still tossing me around, which was strange because it was hours later by then.
lol the difference between "open hole in the side of the ship in the open air" at starbase and "let's put on full bunny suits and be careful what we touch" inside a new glenn tank is striking.
That was great. I enjoy the commentary. Makes it easier in the morning when I’m getting ready to not miss something because I don’t always have time to watch every second of a video so it helps when it’s discuss things and I can simply glance over and see what it’s talking about, as I’m getting ready for work.
3:38 “what they are working on..who knows” that could have been straight out of sort of documentary about some weird creatures orso 😂😂😜 Im loving the updated narrated vids guys!! Wonderful addition
These new narrated videos are amazing. It has made me want to watch with interest all of the update videos in full when I used to watch a handful and skip through. Thank you so much. Keep up all the amazing work!!
Getting used to being on a boom lift is basically the same as getting sea legs on a small boat, at first it's super unnerving but once you get used to it your legs just do all the work while it wobbles
Been there, done that. You learn to walk and stand upright with your knees never locked. The hard part is when you spend time on dry land and have to retrain yourself not to keep your knees bent. For me that was more difficult than transitioning to a ship.
I like the narration. Normally I don't like speculation, but when I hear "I don't know, but I think it might be..." I like it because it makes you think for yourself. Good job, keep it up.
THank you NSF team and Mary for sharing such amazing updates. I actually liked these daily updates video without the narration. Got us to think what we are looking at while hearing the ambient sounds of starbase
Love the narration! If it's not too much work for you guys, would love for it to be the new standard. I listen while I'm at work and don't really get to look at my phone much. Thank you Das!
Gota admit, I didn't like this talking bit at first, but it's growing on me.. :) And also i's nice to hear Das being a part of the visible NSF again :) Let's hear it for Stardays :D
I used to operate a 111 ft giraffe to inspect and repair cameras inside the spray cells at the Michoud Assembly Facility (NASA) in New Orleans, LA. Every year we had to re-certify outside in the wind. Great fun. I/we operated an assortment of lifts but the 111 was the biggest we had.
I am a retired electrician and have worked on a lot of lifts and boy are they ever scary on a windy day. in Ontario you are not allowed to go up if the wind is faster then 60km. I have allso been on baskets on cranes they go up even further then the ones they are using at space X.
I have been in a 60m hydraulic platform fire appliance, we were conducting regular tests to ensure it worked properly. Fully extended we where 197 feet up, it was a little windy, the platform was moving 4 or 5 feet. We started to rotate 100° and then advance 10 feet, as we started to advance the platform dropped 40-50 feet immediately as a valve on the last stage let go. That was a definite 9 out 10 on the pucker scale. The fire captain heard that I was writing a report on it and removing it from service, he ordered me to stop. It hadn't been serviced since new nearly 6 years earlier, the vehicle had to stay operational to maintain our fire response for all large aircraft.
Def like the commentary! Keep it up despite the few nasty people! 👍 The "torque wrench" is actually a mandrell used to align bolt holes. Just a long round tapered piece of steel.
In the UK we call those lifts MEWP's - mobile elevated work platform, and it doesn't have to be windy, just moving around as you work causes swaying that's kinda like being on a boat. And like being on a boat, some people get seasick and can't work on them, others struggle with fear of heights. So those of us that like working on them don't have much of a fight to get a go XD. Great video as always, loving the narration.
The narration is great, I'm so excited to see this whole program progress as fast as it is progressing but at the same time I feel like I'm waiting on an anthill. I want to see the next test already, the third flight of the year, the catch, the re-entry. I know the progress all just adds up to increase the odds of success and I'm glad they aren't rushing it too much. But I also really want to see the next flight as fast as possible.
Any update if the narration can be toggled by RUclips settings? I love putting these on after waking up and making coffee and just listening to the ambiance of Starbase. Even my cat likes to watch, I think she likes the bird sounds haha
I know the entire NSF team works incredibly hard but I wonder how much effort it would take to upload narrated and unnarrated versions of the updates? There is a nice ASMR quality about the ambient sounds but I do like the "casual" narration quite a lot.
We upload the ambient version to members currently until we figure out how to get the multi-track feature back. Unfortunately, uploading both ambient and narrated publicly would hugely affect the RUclips algorithm - which was why we decided to test the narrated version in the first place. -kmr
Yes used manlifts alot (from 60' up to about 110') Back when I worked as a combo fitter/welder in the shipyards(tdi halter/lockeedmartin) I currently work on spacex contract.
you know I just saw this in my sub box and I thought that that is nice , then I realised there was Das as well and looked forward to watching it. this comment is abit messy but I think you get my point
Yup been there done that! at one point in time IBM east fishkill IBM plant had a JLG ULTRALIFT that could go up to about 80 foot high strait up. The part that was un nerving to me was actually driving the thing because when you took your finger off the forward switch or reverse switch the boom/bucket would almost eject you out of the bucket, even with a 5 point harness on!!
Same(-ish)! For me… I wouldn’t describe it as “awkward.” Is there a word for “Looks interesting , but I’m not sure exactly what I’m seeing or the significance?”
@@KiRiTO72987 I'm the opposite I now don't watch it because the narration adds no value and is annoying, maybe because I am constantly watching SBL and know where it's up to, I just like these for higher quality snippets of the progress
You mentioned wanting to be able to annotate the video, maybe you can get a good solution going where you can watch the video in real time and pause/rewind/play it with annotation tools available to just draw over it live, it'd be fairly crude but it'd work and need no extra editing
Love the commentary/narration on this chopsticks overhaul update. Comparing scaffolding to the lifts was good to hear from you guys. I do rope access and look forward to more updates on how the work at height is done at Starbase.
I didn't have enough time to talk about the safety netting hole size, toe boards, and dropping things on people below. Could almost do a whole video hah. - Das
regarding drawing: perhaps you could do 2 takes, one with the voiceover and another with live drawing? itd be helpful to have some arrows at least to help us find our way around the video

I need to know your hourly pay and how much was hazard pay
Loosely related but I used to be able to force that swaying feeling as a kid laying down in bed, but I can't seem to do it anymore. Weird stuff.

I love the DAS talk explainer . Makes the daily summary more enjoyable. Thanks for the extra time for the VO work on these.
You're welcome, thanks for watching! - Das
Thanks John (DAS), & Mary, thank you NSF!

That was a great narration with the weekly updates. Great work, keep up the good work guyz.
These narrated versions are soooo much better than 10 minutes of ambient noise and time-lapse!
agreed
PLEASE DON'T KILL THE AMBIENT ONES. Some of us use them to wind down before falling asleep!
@@NathansWorkshop I enjoy the narration-free ones as well.
I much prefer the ambient - narration adds no value to me personally actually more of an annotated, I'd rather just watch the progress with ambiance
Maybe do both. Do one with ambient and one with narration.
I was there in 2023. I can’t believe the difference. Spacex rocks!!
Can't say it enough. The narration by Das makes these videos more enjoyable to watch.
Yeah I use to skim through and watch interesting bits but the narration is just way better, it's like we're watching together.
